They are talking about 10 years in the game, which is not much really but should be enough to build a small city and try out things. Haven't tried SC3000 yet, but the former versions rocked so I'm looking forward to play it in 3 days when it's done downloading;)
and a post with name "HOW TO" - gives a lot of info about usenet people at the time ?. On offtopic, when did HOWTOs/Usenet FAQs first start? Which group was the first?
generally, i think i would use the bsd license for that kind of project - does not add any restrictions to the user. (the non advertising one). I generally think BSD license is much more freedom than GPL, which is real "free software"
This really sounds like a good idea, like getting standard phone lines to have like 256kbit/s as standard, but would it work in practice with a lot of users on same telephone central??
A common/filetype description protocol, and then unix/tcp sockets, and simply open two connections as a pipe, shouldn't be as hard? sockets are about some of the simplest stuff to create pipes with
Well, don't we backstab commericial providers from their lawful income when making free software of same kind?. Don't we infact backstab the artists when downloading mp3s? They have to live too. If for-pay mp3s came out - I would _gladly_ sponsor it. FUD can be used in open source too, but its not very ethical. I'm not aware of any examples but I bet there are some out there
Some of us are stuck with 50mhz 486's still:/ I bet a 1.4GHz will give me a major heart attack.. How would computer buyers who bought one in '97 for example, a normal house family, know how to upgrade to one of those mammuts? PC Manufactures should give upgrade guarantee for a small fee:P
Some things people may not think of is that each computer user is his/her own admin at home - I would see many of the housemothers I help with their computers, how to fix things on their own etc, to scream when they realize they now have to type "find -print | grep filename" to find a file, when the poor WM has crashed and they do not know anything about how to fix lockfiles?. People may think many computer users are stupid, but some actually do try to help themselves out by learning about things - you really think Linux/*nix/BSD should be a OS just for tech-savy people like us?. If anyone would do a recode of *nix, or redesign and make it easy for people to use, configure, even when it has crashed and the GUI simply fails ?. People want a system where they can combine simple and technical - which I think MacOS X does a good attempt at?. Unix does not suck, but its simply too difficult for some people.
Web designers could use this to check compliance with oooold browsers as well. This kinda helps instead of having a copy of Mosaic from 1992 on your computer, and etc. Let's emulate the internet 10 years ago !;)
A networked satellite with a PC on it, carrying DeCSS, Napster servers, and other stuff. Outer space is counted as international terroritory right?. How much does it cost to send up a satellite and would people be interested in having a totally secure outer space co-location? I got my dibs on the first co-location on the moon
"Cannot load Corel Office or StarOffice files". When we're a "open source community", shouldn't we atleast help eachother by understanding the file formats instead of going the M$ way with properitary formats?. Anyhow, GNOME Office. Wouldn't this be the same if Microsoft delievered MS Office with every Windows copy sold?. Food for thought
Additionally, check out the eNow Scanbot thread in alt.irc (deja: http://www.deja.com/group.alt.irc). There is a good discussion going on (as well) about the scanbots. Worth a read.
As being an admin on one of those IRC networks it searches - to be exact - they are a pain in the ass. The come in with different IPs, different nicks. However ChatScan is starting to cooperate with the (pissed off) irc networks - so that they will be easier to reconize. They do not register any conversation, just makes a analysis of the talk - and categorizes them by some kind of AI. So you cannot see what mafiaboy wrote yesterday on #l33thax0rs. May be good, but they should be a selectable thing and they should have talked with the networks they search first.
This makes me wonder. Does Redhat have extensions so that that product only will run on it?. What about the other Linux dists? People should say they release "for Linux", not for "Slackware Linux", "Debian Linux", "Redhat Linux". Some stuff for thought.
To get real communication - get encrypted irc. This will eventually come out in a while - and I bet no firewall can block all of encrypted protocols. Chat is the future for communication - E-Mail may be good, but with IRC/chat you get a meeting table or face-to-face experince - Email would be same as a Penfriend from China. Get an IRC server setup, possible SSH up to it, or wait a little for encrypted irc solutions:) (which will come )
Why has the world gone to a place where each person's individuality is void?. Somewhere in my mind I could wish that my piece of land (my house for example), would be a untouched place for government. In Denmark there has been a case about the Tax Dept. directly evading a persons privacy by putting up spy cams, just to prove that he used the firm car as a private car. I mean, don't they have better to do but play MI5 agents?. I wish the goverments could realize that people want privacy, not Big Brother-systems. If this continues this way we will be seeing flying camera droids "just to make sure the citizens are all right", and keep an eye on us all 24/7? Who would have access to those videos?. I don't want my parents to know what I do with my girlfriend in my free-time for instance, or my neighbours?. Privacy rules really.
Is it just me or does that trick possiblity have random effects on different computers? Back in the Trumpet Winsock days when you looked up "dns.name." with an extra dot, it would append your local domain, am I wrong or does some *nixes/OS'es do this still? It may not work always I believe. Every censorware got a vulnerable spot:P (and that one is just called dumb coding)
Must say one thing, you say "topic of the day" - you realize its soon topic of the week too?. Switch topic - your "topic of the day" doesn't work anymore - I think I'm not the only one thinking that this is 100% offtopic - If we get a story on ectasy - yes sure put it in - but in discussions like "Kids, Computers And Authority", things like this don't fit in - Kids reading this article might think you are telling them to drink beer. Give up! Your karma is like -15 already. Ectasy is bad, but don't we all know it somewhere??. -
"3. Apple didn't want you developing for the Mac unless you werre a commercial licenser." - I hope they have taken this off - some guy told me that you would have to get a license (this year) to get allowance to distribute and make programs at all. Who would program for something that they had to pay to release it for?
"but records with the Patent and Trademark Office suggest it has something to do with selling "psychographic" information, i.e., matching advertisments to particular lifestyles and beliefs." - Okay, first thing that rises to mind - how in the world can you get to know what lifestyle an certain IP or host has got, and what belief? This more looks like a group of grown up script kiddies really - "wh0a, w3 gotta scan the whole internet and find as many exploits as possible". Anyone who scans subnets/whole nets with pings for no official and very good reason should be shot really. There's no use for this but annoying ISPs and sysadmins world over.
Got to laugh a little of 32bitsonline's image filenames: [stripeditorial.gif] [stripsoftreview.gif] [stri phardreview.gif] [striptechnical. gif][striphumour.gif][stripcontacts.gif] and stripcontest.gif too;). Anyhow on the article - "Opaque folders", isn't this really much like a.tar / tar.gz / zip whatever?. I think MacOS 7-8 had something like - like "baskets"(sp?) of fonts etc. New concept? Don't think so - Anyhow I think they did a very good job - and they absolutely deserve any fame they can get from it. Btw! I got the dibs on the first graphical kernel panic!
I don't really like the idea of "passport", because if one person gets my password to for instance hotmail, he can access any other of my accounts. Most likely banks would join the passport system too. One login/password hacked and your life is fucked. Different passwords are _always_ good - Security decreases with laziness really.
I really hope they keep those giant mice in the labs securely in cages so they can't get out. Can you just imagine if your mother found one of these in your kitchen?. I bet the Scientists would be knocked down by the Housemothers Association if they let those mice out:P

Can we port xbill to those? ;) Hours and hours of plenty family fun and the DOJ plays it too!
