  1. Re:Interesting idea on Microsoft Offers A Bounty On Virus Writers · · Score: 1

Whether or not they're supporters of anti-spam legislation, they're still not going to offer bounties on spammers (for now). The goal with offering them on virus writers is that virus writing is punishable by law. So MS catches the people, turns them in, and it acts as a deterrent. With spam, who would they turn them over to? What would be the deterrent?

It's pretty simple, actually. If you knew certain people worked in certain buildings, and you knew what those buildings were working on, you could possibly get some idea of what direction they're headed. For example, if they have a building that's dedicated to MSN Search and you find they have an unusual number of people in that building who have are experts in translation software and can speak fluent Chinese, you'd be able to tell they're working on some form of translating Chinese in their search engine. Not that big of a deal? It is if you're investing millions of dollars in new concepts.

While I agree that a HDTV is great for DVD's, you're wrong on the rest of the post. You don't need to purchase a HDTV receiver in order to watch HD shows.... I rent my box from TW cable for $7/month.

As for the programming, each season there's more and more of it coming out. I primarily got it for sports broadcasts (Superbowl, MNF, The Masters, Final Four), but there's some decent shows in HD right now. I really like the CSI shows (they're obviously not for everyone, but they appeal to my geeky side), Law & Order, Smallville (even though we dont get HD WB in this area yet), and a few others.

For the people that say that the quality difference doesn't matter, I hope you abstain from commenting in MP3 vs uncompressed audio arguements. Toy Story 2 was on in HD last weekend (Disney's movie each week is in HD) and I showed it to my mother in law in both HD and SD, and SHE noticed the difference (she's uber-untechy). As prices come down, I doubt anyone would go with non-HD for their next TV. I'll check back with you in 10 years and see if you're watching HD down-converted to SD. :)

I think part of it has to do with the number of posts lately. The last 10 articles (not including the current) have had an average of 224 posts. I estimated the average in early-mid summer and came up with 550. Twice as many posts = twice as much required moderation? I'm not sure how slash works in this regard.

Now, as far as the reason for fewer posts, I know that the editors have said that late summer-fall tends to be slower for news, but I also think they've been putting up some boring articles lately. Granted, they may be exciting to some people, but I'm just generalizing. Hey editors... instead of posting articles just for the sake of posting articles, how about sticking only with the interesting ones and taking the leftover time and hunting for other interesting websites to feature? Maybe even write an editorial or two? A State-of-the-Slashdot address? Something fun? :)

In addition, the graphics engine (or logic for hiding detail while zoomed out) they're using must be a stud to be able to handle 1000+ units, each fighting and reacting uniquely. Toss in the fact that arrows actually stick in enemies, Trolls being smart enough to use Orcs as weapons, and the incredible graphics and it should be an excellent game. I'm under the impression that in civil cases, where damage has been done, parents are responsible for the actions of their children. If your kid goes around trashing cars and breaking windows, they get in trouble, but the parents are responsible for restitution. So, the suit IS again the girl AND her parents, if only by proxy.

In any case, the RIAA messed up on this one. Makes you wonder if they'll be more selective on who they sue in the future.

Actually, while I'm not aware of MS making actual donations to schools and school districts, Bill and Melinda Gates donate a TON of money. They just picked Milwaukee as one of the benefitors of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, whose purpose is to have urban school districts be able to build many more schools (about 20 for Milwaukee). This, in turn, allows for smaller class sizes and hopefully higher grades. They're donating $120 million just to Milwaukee for this cause.

I hate Windows as much as the next guy, but give some credit where it's due and admit that it's admirable to donate cash when they could just be sitting on their billions. Granted they get tax breaks because of the donations, but they could just be donating it all to politicians and still get those breaks. :)

Since the CD owner will receive 1 cent for allowing access to this CD, they would benefit the most by putting in the CD that's in the highest demand. The system would balance itself.

I've found that Perl syntax is more like C++ than Java is. Similarily, if you know PHP, you basically know Perl.

I learned Perl quite a few years ago, and use it on a daily basis. When I needed to use PHP for some large projects, I was able to learn it on-the-fly in under a week. Sure there's a few PHP functions I still don't know, but I'll probably never use them.

The way I see the development of Perl is that they're making it backward-compatible enough for people to make an easy transition, while having it advance enough to make the transition worthwhile. They've even switched to calling Perl regex's "rules" so people don't confuse true regex's or even what other computer software refers to as regex's.

This quote from the article sums it up perfectly... the article author is complaining because he can't formulate a search properly. Obviously, Apple Computers IS the most relevant "apple" on the internet. If you want apple the fruit, you search for "apple fruit". If you want Fiona Apple, you search for "fiona apple". The only way I can see getting around this would be for Google to add "Did you mean 'apple' as a _fruit_, _computer company_, or _fiona apple_?" to the top of the listings, to drill down more specifically.
