Your points are very valid. Im not going to flame what you said, just make some comments:P
(btw, I guess you weren't a part of Atari, because you spelled it with a y:) )
About those collections, developers are just releasing them for two reasons - to cash in, and to deter people from downloading the roms. They release them for people who don't know that you can get them for free, and the people who have them already and realize that the games are 100x better on a tv with a console controller. I have Final Fantasy 5 and 6 on my computer, but I still own Final Fantasy Anthology.
I _completley_ agree with these games not getting GPLed. Taco just let his extreme bias get in the way and followed the rule that every post has to include praise for Linux/GPL and/or bashing Microsoft. If Nintendo GPLed Mario then why would anyone want to buy Mario for the Dolphin? Or Final Fantasy IX? Or any game at all? It would lead to a market flooded with hundreds of games based off of Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Sonic, ect that weren't ever made by Nintendo or Sega.
I agree with the MAME supporting Rampage World Tour also. That is getting just a bit too recent. I can see it supporting Mortal Kombat 2 (where are you going to find an MK2 machine?) and games that old, but World Tour is just a year or so old, which is way too soon. Im surprised they are even letting it into MAME. Just because you can emulate it doesn't mean you should.
I personally believe that anything from the SNES/Genesis/Neo Geo era and back (including arcade games) is fair grounds for emulation and free download. Most games from then can't be bought easily, and the hardcore people who really like the games DO buy them (just do a search for Neo Geo on eBay), because they realize the real thing is better.
I think this is mainly an issue because we are such a big country. Our country is bigger than almost the entire Europe, and our states are usually bigger than most countries there. Because of that it adds many problems to the situation. I mean its much easier to provide access to a country the size of New York than to provide for a country the size of Europe.
Microsoft won't decide what shit is. Hardware comes first, then the software. Even if there is only Windows, hardware manufacturers still make the hardware THEN Windows supports it. Microsoft does't make additions to their OS's that don't even have hardware that exists to support it, trying to define the specifications themselves.
The real monopoly that everyone should be going against is Intel (AOL too, but thats a whole nother paragraph:P ). They have the power to hurt the industry MUCH more than Microsoft ever could. They ARE the hardware, and if they force users into buying expensive things they don't need (RAMBUS) it can create a big problem. A $100 copy of Windows is one thing, but a $500 stick of 128 megs of RAM is another.
And BTW, every phone company in England sucks ass, not just Bell. Paying per minute for the Internet is the norm there.
So I guess movies should be free? How about books? I suppose the Coke should give out their secret recipe, as well as Pepsi. The government should also tell us all of their secrets, as well as providing information on how to make an atomic bomb.
You dont realize that a game is not only an idea but ALSO a service. Until you make Quake 3 or Half-Life or any other game by yourself then you just have an idea. The game is an idea. Making the game is the service.
Hey, lets punish ATI by not putting their new, awesome graphics card in our new computer, instead going with one of their old crappy ones, so that nobody buys our new computer because nobody wants that damn Rage 128 chip!
There is already a game out like that for the Dreamcast called Seaman.
You can fully talk to and hold conversations with a virtual pet type fish in a fishtank. And their not just stupid little chats, you can hold a full conversation. He responds according to how you act and everything. Say something stupid and he will fake fun of you. Talk about the Playstation 2 and he makes fun of it. Pretty advanced stuff.
With videogames, you are manipulating a (probably) unrealistic character to kill/destroy things. Right then and there that MUST mean that its fake. Kids would think that if you are controlling it with a controller, it cant be real, because real people arent controlled like that.
With movies, you see a real person on the screen with a real gun shooting at a real person. If its taped then is must be real because those are real people. Kids dont realize that the blood is fake. Kids dont know theres no ammo in the guns they use. Kids don't know stuntmen are used for the falls. Kids know that videogames arent real.
I think that sucks BTW. I dont even have a mac, and probably never will, but its bull that the game wont be making it to the mac. Probably not the PC either.
If Bungie was smart and wanted super bonus points they would release it for the PC and MAC.
But his games are technically still superior. Ever wonder why Quake 3 is used in every video card test? Because it is one of the most technically impressive games out there. Sure the fact that he makes good games is still up in the air, but the fact is that he knows how to code, and he does it well.
First off, the Quake games only ended up on linux because he wanted his games ported to as many platforms as possible. It wasnt some personal crusade, he just wanted his games on tons of platforms. Look at all the other ones it was ported to.
Second, xbox isnt going to take any desktop operating share at all. ITS A GAMING CONSOLE. CONSOLE. CONSOLE. CONSOLE.
Get it? Everyone thinks that this is going to be windows in a box or something. Its not. its a strictly GAMING CONSOLE. You arent going to be doing your taxes on it. Your going to be blowing shit up on it.

If this was an IE bug how much different all of the opionions would be. But its Netscape and Netscape has a Linux version so its ok.
Not population. The problem with wireless is providing coverage over a large area.
Yes, I believe it did come with the ability. I remember reading it in that big ass faq that comes with a few shareware versions of Doom.
Now what if that story was against Microsoft and said the exact same things... would you post this then?

Score:5, Truth
The truth hurts doesn't it?
BTW, I hate pokemon.
Because Cmdr Taco has lots of stock in Linux companies that he has to see skyrocket.
With all these review samples going out there aren't going to be any Pentium 3 chips for us to buy!
Hey, that sounds like Slashdot!
Not 64.
"plenty of modellers are sick of Windows crashes"
Windows doesnt crash if you use it right.
Besides, only the idiot developers would be using Windows 9x to do critical modeling - they all use NT or 2000, which *gasp* is stable.
How about we leave it as it is - free.

"The refusal to use windows is more down to idealism, and a refusal to support a company like MS."
I know. Ever notice how companies are constantly punished for being successful?
Bell is still a monopoly in Canada and I don't see Canadians complaining every day how much they suck.
Which is why we have to pay for software.

Its VERY different.
