Are you using a 2.0 kernel for the ip masq box? Back when I was in the Asheron's Call beta, I had problems connecting through ip masq. There _is_ a problem on 2.0 kernels for some UDP situations. You can use the Loose-UDP patch to fix it or (what I did) upgrade to a 2.2 kernel. After that, things worked great.

Also, running a SOCKS proxy is different than running IP masq. (it's a userspace tool for one) There are a few implementations for linux at freshmeat, but I've never used that stuff.

Here's what John Smedley, the president of Verant said in a letter to some EQ sites:

The first of these changes concerns the selling of EverQuest Characters andItems outside of the game (i.e. things like Ebay). Here is the text of this change:

"You may not sell or auction any EverQuest characters, items, coin or copyrighted material."

You may ask why we are doing this. There are many reasons, but first andforemost of them is the amount of trouble this is causing our Customer Service group. Simply put there are a lot of people out there who defraud others and we are being put in the middle of it, and we don'thave the time or the resources to assist people with these disputes when they arise. The next reason is amore philosophical one and that is that we believe people should have to earn their items and characters in thegame rather than from buying them outside the game. Obviously the second point can be argued from other perspectives that we do in fact respect, but we wanted you to hear ours.

Think about that software for a second. It's Microsoft software, of course. And what is the cost of giving away software? Once it's developed, it's very little to dupe more discs. Plus that number is based on the sticker price for Microsoft products - say $500 for Office, $200 for Windows 98, etc. Lastly, think about who it goes to. A lot of MS software goes to schools and the like. This gains MS market share and helps influence sales when the kids want a home computer to run the programs they use at school, or after school when they're going to college.

This is great news, because BioWare doesn't just make games, they make the game engine as well.
