I implemented Nagios at my work and am very happy with. We are mostly a Citrix shop so rouge processes on windows servers are the bane to things running smoothly. We monitor average CPU load on all our application servers.
All in all I'm monitoring about 200 different processes across our network as well as running MRTG on the same box. Never felt once I needed to cluster.

Having spent a year manning the phones at Earthlink in thier cutstomer service department, I wonder what advertisers would expect to gain by advertising on a free ISP service. They are trying to market products to people who are too cheap to pay for an ISP, what makes you think they are going to want to buy anything else.
I had a hard enough time trying to convice people that the 19.95 we were charging them was for a subscription based service. You pay for it, it's up to you to use it. If you didn't use it, tough luck. You don't argue with the paper boy that you didn't read sunday's edition, he still dropped it off at your door step.
Maybe there is something more to be said about the number of people who would call me 2 days before thier account was ready to be billed and would cancel so that they could go buy some groceries. If you are living that close to the wire maybe it's time to rethink your priorities. ----

If you think Mozilla is slow and unusable then head over to the build documentation on mozilla.org and read through how to pull the CVS tree and roll your own version. It's actually quite simple. Last weekend I pulled the tree and used the build configurator to turn off all the debugging code and turn off a lot of warning flags and little things like that. What I ended up with is a fairly fast running version that has SSL, java, flash, and runs through ESD as well. Ever few hours I close it down and restart it because top says it's eatting up memory, but it is definatly bettner than Netscape 4.7, Netscape 6, or any of the milestone builds. ----

The best way to gaurd your kids against porn is to be blunt about it. I say show it to them. Explain to them what it is.
Half the fun with porn and kids is the idea that they are getting away with something that mom and dad don't know about.
Then construct an elegant lie. Have all the internet access in the house routed through a Linux box. Tell your kid you've written a perl script which will scan every URL routed through the box for some keywords and will send you an e-mail once it reaches a certain limit.
By the time the kid has learned how to hack in as root and figure out how to disable this non-existant script you can feel confident that they know how to use the Internet as a tool instead of a porn bank. ----

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) and AndoverNet (NasdaqNM:ANDN - news) on Monday declined to comment on rumors that Microsoft was looking to take over the electronic news service company.
Shares of both companys did what is normally expected of over inflated speculative trading.
``We don't comment on rumors,'' said Microsoft CEO Bill Gates.
`Typically we don't comment on these kinds of rumors,'' said Rob Malda creater of the overly popular Slashdot news board. ----

I work in customer service for a very large ISP. At least once a week I have to deal with a call from an irate person who has found a charge on their credit card that they never expected to be there. Normally I post a refund to the credit card and get the person off the phone. If it was a hacked account submit it to the fraud department.
Here is where I begin to loose track of the situation. In the case of one individual, 17 monthly charges had been posted before they decided to call in and discuss the situation. It is obvious by looking at the usage that the account was never used, but 17 monthly charges before it ever clicked to me seems idiotic. I calmly inform the individual that I am only able to refund two months back. The next thing said is usually "I'll get my credit card company in on this." To which I respond that "As far as credit cards are concerened, all charges are valid unless disputed within the fist 60 days."
Read the fine print on your credit card statements. If you don't dispute that charge within 60 days the credit card company isn't going to do anything for you. Consumers seem to forget all that legal mumbo jumbo they sign when they sign up for credit cards. You are legealy and financially responsible for that card. Every single charge. If you were an idiot and didn't read your monthly statements for the past 17 months, PLEASE do not yell at me telling me that we've been stealing your money.
I think truthfully that credit cards are a much bigger and deeper problem in this country (the US) than just hacked cards being used on the internet. It strikes right at the heart of consumerism in America. I like to say this country was built on the backs of plastic.
Ok enough preaching. ---- "War doesn't determine who's right, just who's left"
I will not name names but I used to work for a co-location facility. I think one of the most important things is to actually visit a site before you settle on a facility. On paper the facility I worked for looked great. If you took a tour of our facility you usually heard a lot of "That's scheduled to be installed." I worked there for six months and nothing got installed.
This brings me to my second point. Don't be afraid to check the financial backings of a facility you are interested in. You are trusting your buisness to a compnay, you need to make sure that the electric company isn't going to be turning the power off, or the fiber company hasn't been paid in three months.
The biggest thing is to make sure that what they claim is in fact what they say. We said 24 hour staffed, in fact I was the one who locked up the doors at the end of the night and set an alarm, which had a habit of going off when the few customers we did have attempted to check thier servers during off hours.
Ultimately I left that company mainly over a lack of paychecks, but also I just hated liying to people about who we were.
