You clearly have some mental ability. You are capable, able to put words together and form sentences, and you seem at least sincere in what you've written.

But how can you be so completely blind?

What you've described is essentially impossible. And I am thankful it is so. Information should be free. All information. And eventually I hope this extends to physical, material objects as well. Then capitalism will be reduced to what makes it work, and we will have eliminated closed-minded nonsense. That is, the elmination of the current common denominator. The average economy today, that says people should get paid or be worth more than others because they are able to keep information from others. It is just this sort of mongering of resources (read: information) that I despise the most, and I think will ultimately be destroyed for good. Hopefully with the launching and subsequent crushing annihilation of DRM.

Let us be free, not locked tightly away in a DRM-like prison.

Tell me why it should be any other way. I dare you.

We can't honestly keep on going like we are on this planet and survive much longer. We're using up resources faster than we can keep track of them and it's becoming easier and easier to make weapons of mass destruction... which terrorists will inevitably use against other nations/cultures. Especially as the population continues to skyrocket.

So, call me whatever you want, but Van Allen is just missing the big picture. We gotta get off this rock.

Or should we just wait for an asteroid cataclysm or some other natural disaster? I'd rather not. Personally, I think we should spend more money and effort on things like space elevators and fusion/antimatter/exotic matter propulsion.

In short, to Van Allen: screw you too buddy.

Humans have already begun terraforming themselves, just look at all the overweight Americans whom I sure claim that eating six double-cheesburgers a day is really 'optimizing' their body size for Mars' 2/3rds of Earth gravity.

All joking aside, the only good reason for humans (at this point in the game) to live off of Earth is simple: Eliminate the 'all our eggs in one basket' problem once and for all. And in light of recent news (things like the VISA bacteria), I believe it is high time we got our asses in gear and actually did it.

Mars seems to be a sennsible choice for a permanent colony off-world. I seriously doubt much in the way of profound new discoveries would come from just living on Mars in colonies (think total recall, but with the right amount of gravity and no alien reactors or Ahhnold), and thankfully that's not why we would do it.

It will be much, much easier as soon as a space elevator is built and operational, though. So let's forget about terraforming mars or humans, because by the time we are done doing that we'll probably all be dead from something else.

All we need is more research into the mass-production of nanotubes (making really, really long ones and connecting them together effectively) and we're over the major hurdle.

I'm hoping for around a 15-20 year timeline until the first one is built.

On every PC I've ever worked I can pull a mobo and replace components on it within 5-20 minutes. It's really not that difficult.

Yes, it might end up worse for a PC repair shop, but even then it seems like there would be ways to structure pricing accordingly and, maybe, even make a little bit more money this way.

That is, unless the shop is already charging too much for what is basically a 2 minute job, which isn't something I think belong in business regardless.

Personally, if I ran a shop, and a PC needed a new processor, and the customer brought the PC in and I had the processor on shelf, I would tell them to wait a minute while I changed out the processor, and only charge them for the processor's cost (and my normal percentage markup)

In the case of a mobo change, I would be justified in getting a bit of a labor charge in there...

But this is all assuming a customer was the one who bent the pin, which makes no sense because they're bringing it in to shop afterwards.. so what were they even doing removing their CPU in the first place if they were just going to be bringing it into a shop ?

    Hmmm

Replacing a mobo is a small task, I did it to a few PowerEdge servers yesterday, took about 20 minutes for each one, and there's a lot more on one of those (at least these customized ones I am working with) than on your Compaq Presario.

I could show you a price/time breakdown and explain that by replacing the mobo you are effectively probably making over $100/hr, but then you'd probably reply with some inane comment about how you have so much money that you want to make a mobo out of $100 bills.

Yea, he sees how much Linux sucks.

It's plain and simple: Windows XP Pro is beyond all forms of Linux.

    1) It doesn't crash. If it does, it's your fault 99% of the time. Even trying to crash it I have trouble.

    2) It's got WAY, WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY more programs on the platform.

    3) You don't have to wait for the gay linux version for anything, it comes out already compatible.

    4) It runs faster than Linux bit for bit, byte for byte.

    5) It has tons of included features in each new release, and for all of the supposed "security vulnerabilities" my system has not once been compromised.

    6) Active Directory. Active Directory. Active Directory.

I am so sick and tired of hearing all this crap about Linux this and Linux that. There's a perfectly good OS already out there, it's called Windows XP. And 2000 Pro was good too, as well as 98. I've use Linux enough to know I don't like that fact that it's not suitable for 80% of the world's population.

I'll stick with what the rest of the world uses -- that way when a client needs assistance with what THEY USE I will actually know what TO DO, instead of saying "oh you should get Linux"

    YEA RIGHT.

  21. This is stupid. on Warner Bros. plans 'Superman vs. Batman' Movie · · Score: 1

First, Batman is way cooler than Superman.. I mean, some alien kid that looks _exactly_ human yet has amazing powers and saves the world all the time is cool enough, but Batman is just that much cooler because he doesn't save the freakin world all the time, and he's not perfect, he has more than 1 flaw (read: superman is only vulnerable to kryptonite, a truly rare ore, yet it somehow always shows up at the wrong time, yet there's NONE on Earth so where is it coming from blah blah) and Batman's women are just hotter. Period.

Not to knock on the S-man, but I seriously doubt this would make a good movie, especially if superman 'wins' the battle, or whatever.

Second, they're both GOOD guys. Batman is not evil, he does what he does for the good of Gotham, and if you're going to make one of the two go bad I would think Superman is a better choice -- use a 'kryptonite voodoo doll from Superman's home planet' or something, but don't make BATMAN THE EVIL ONE..

If they think of some cheesy reason for Batman to go evil I can garauntee this movie will be eye-candy without much real plot or emotion... and not worth 10 dollars.

    Third,

Omg there are so many better pairs of archvillain/monsters vs. good guys/heroes than saying either Batman or Superman has gone evil and now one of em has to beat the other... That's just counterproductive, and downright lame.

I want to see Aliens vs. Predator vs. Batman, not Superman vs. Batman, that's just too much MAN.

Besides, just compare their wardrobes... Batman wins hands down.
