Well, that takes care of what was lacking... that should ensure ticket sales from the Slashdot community! Especially if Superman is the jock with all 3 female leads hanging around him, and Batman is the heroic computer geek living in his basement, brooding and plotting his revenge.

Haven't you seen the last 3 Batman's? Batman *always* gets the hotties. Superman on the other hand is stuck with dumpy, whiny Lois Lane. Spiderman is the ultimate pimp though. He has technology AND supernatural ability, plus he gets to bang Kirsten Dunst (the rain shot...ooooh). Batman is all tech, Superman is all supernatural, but Spiderman is the best of both worlds.

Spiderman vs. Batman would be alot more interesting.

The stated comic-book crossover would be Superman and Batman. Both are part of the DC universe, and are by DC comics.

Ironically, so is the Star Trek comic book.

As others have mentioned, it's Superman vs Batman.
However, back in the early 1970s, Marvel and DC came together to print a comic that actually had Superman vs Spiderman.
I never bought it, but I assume that Spidy's radioactivity is Kryptonite-based.
Otherwise, if Kryptonite (or another Kryptonian) is not involved, then Superman will always win against anybody else.

The idea of a new superman movie has been flying around hollywood for about 2 years now..I even heard rumors of Nicholas Cage playing the role; the idea was set after the onset of all these comic book-turned movies became hits. Its gonna be weird seeing a duel between superheros

That was called Superman Lives and was supposed to be the movie that followed his death in the comic book. There isn't much of anything on IMDB, but this is what I remember about the project. Nick Cage was signed up to be the new supe. Kevin Smith was paid $300k to write a script, which he cranked out in three weeks and had Superman fighting Braniac (Smith has been a comic book geek for a lot longer than a movie geek). Tim Burton signed up to direct, but on the condition that they throw away Kevin Smith's script. After that, the project completely disappeared. I'm pretty sure the producer was Joel Silver. I just looked at his IMDB list and it's possible that Superman Lives got canned after Matrix hit big and he realized that he could start his own big franchise instead of rehashing an existing (and basically dead) one.

I guess you never actually read any of the comics then, in fact basically every time they meet Batman whips superman like a little girl. Just because super man has powers doesnt mean he wins, remember, Batman is smarter and will set up any fight to his specifications. Superman isn't the brightest of fellows ever (duh..i'll use my heatvision). Just read Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller (as well as the sequal comic to is in which batman leaves superman a bloody lump) and you should get an idea what I mean.

Thats why I think this movie will be a bad idea, it cannot cature to both the hardcore comic readers and the common public. The actual comic readers would know that Batman would most likely win (or at least kick the daylights out of superman) while the common public wont be able to get past the idea that since superman has powers and batman does not, then it will be an easy victory for superman.

Batman hides in some buildings,
Superman uses his x-ray vision,
x-ray-seeking missile auto-launches carrying warhead of synthesized kryptonite as Bruce comments how many years and how much money it cost to make. . .
Clark gets creamed.

That's the kind of contrived bullshit that will lead to a decrease in the enjoyment that I'll have when viewing the movie.

Superman is a genius intellect and partially a product of an advanced race and civilization. He's able to make an enormous number of decisions at nearly the speed of light (move at near the speed of light, and you kinda need to be able to think that quickly as well). Time and again in the cartoons and comics, supervillains neutralize Superman's physical advantages, and Superman has to instead outsmart them.

So we can see after years of evidence that he's this world-class intellect, yet Batman is going to defeat Superman's nearly invincible physical attributes. That's just contrived nonsense. You'd think by now that Superman would be paranoid when entering a situation where he might be trapped in closed quarters with someone bearing Kryptonite. But no, X-Ray vision and all, he's going to walk right into it once again. Ugh, it's just awful.

Superman may be a genius and clever and all that, but there are certain ways that he simply won't think because it's against his nature. Batman, on the other hand, has a sick, sick mind. (That's why he keeps fighting the joker -- you get the villians you deserve.)
Also, Superman is extremely vulnerable to magic (which is why Wonder Woman's lasso can hold him). Supes gets blasted with magic more often than kryptonite. Now, I'm not saying that Batman's going to team up with David Copperfield. I'm just saying that he doesn't have to rely on kryponite.
Finally, just because Superman can think at the speed of light doesn't mean that he can solve any problem instantly. What if Batman's trap can't be solved in polynomial time?

That's always been a problem for the Superman scriptwriters - how to make _anything_ be a challenge, since over the years since the comic strip started (around 1930?) they've attributed so much strength and so many abilities to him that anything short of a galaxy-sized black hole ought to be easy. He's the irresistible force and the immovable object. And if he screws up and lets something bad happen without being there to stop it, he can just fly faster than light to reverse time. You'd think his only real problem would be keeping his personal organizer up to date (08:45 save Lois from bad guy 1, 08:50 save the world from bad guy 2, 08:55 pick up a mugger from the alley and drop him off at Sing Sing, 09:00 put in an appearance in civies as the mild mannered reporter who missed all the fun again, 09:05 save Lois again...)

So how is Batman, who is just a human being with really nice toys, going to face Superman? Yawn, kryptonite again. Obviously that stuff deadens his brain long before he comes close enough to lose his strength, otherwise he'd have learned not to fall for it every time. And it's easy to find green kryptonite on earth, even for convicts on the run from the law, let alone billionaires.

IIRC, someone once calculated from the quantities of kryptonite that have turned up on Earth and the inverse square law, that Krypton must have been so massive it collapsed into a black hole.

Unfortunately in todays Hollywood noone want's to show a "good guy" getting beaten. The ending will probably be something stupid where at the end they both realize that the other has their place in the world and shake hands and then walk away. That would be the best thing that could happen. I would assume something worse than that will happen: They become partners. Batman seems to be picking up new partners every time he gets a new movie (and I know there are no more partners he can pick up in the typical batman universe)

Batman runs in from the left, cape fluttering behind him.
Robin runs in from the right, cape fluttering
Batgirl runs in from the right, cape fluttering, boobs bouncing.
Superman flys in from the top, grabs Batgirl, drags her off camera. Cue sounds of rubber suit being ripped off.

As they look at each other, they get a slight grin on their faces. Batman pulls out the Bat Camcorder and they both run off in the direction the moans are coming from...

Hey wait a minute, I might be willing to pay money for that ;)

We saw in Superman II that Superman is capable of fairly judging and anticipating "evil" human behavior. I think that a lot of this "batman is darkly clever" is really just a form of apologetics.

Ask DC Comics. It's a well established fact that *ALL* the DC heroes are scared-to-death of Batman to a greater or lessor degree because of the file of their weakness and other things he has on them. In other words Bats knows exactly how to beat the crap out of all them. There has been a number of storylines dealing with how much Bats is trusted/disliked by the other DC heroes because of this.

Nah, the missles contained conventional military-grade explosives. Easy to get for a billionaire with no scruples. The missles were just there to soften Superman up a bit while Bruce watched in the shadows, clad in strength-enchanced armor he had charged up with the entire city's power grid.

Whilst Batman tried a bit of Ali on Supes, getting his ribs caved in, old Oliver Queen, former billionaire and current anarcho-socialist terrorist, otherwise known as the Green Arrow, fired a kryptonite arrowhead at Clark's noggin.

Distracted by trying not to kill his old friend, Clark spun a bit too slow when he heard the arrow arrive, instinctively snatching the shaft in mid-trajectory.

Oops, thought Clark as the payload detonated. Queen was well pleased -- he wanted Wayne to beat nine kinds of holy hell out of the Big Blue Schoolboy, who had been the agent of a fascistic U.S. regime which had rounded all of the superheroes years before. Ollie lost his right arm fighting the guvmint, and blamed Supes for that.

After the arrow went off, Bruce proceeded to slam thousands of foot-pounds of force via fist and feet into Supes weakened nads. This didn't kill the Big Cheese, but it gave Wayne the chance to pretend to die at the moment he had Clark on his knees with Wayne's hand around his throat.

Payback was Batman's for all the hell Clark had put them all through by cooperating with the people who locked up or deported the heroes.

Not necessarily true. Remember Richard Pryor's supercomputer from Superman.. uh, 3 I think? There's no telling how much kryptonite it might have synthesized once it got the formula right.

Hey, there's an idea... Batman vs. Superman, with Superman's brain all contaminated with the messed up 'kryptonite' with tar so he'd be almost as big an asshole as Batman. I might pay to see that.

Oh, who am I kidding, I would wait for it on video. Heck, I'm passing on seeing a Star Wars movie in the theater, for crying out loud.

Yeah, but he looks like a Superman, not a Batman. Keaton is a weirdo, so he makes a better Batman--he looks like a Batman.
Personally, I'd like to see Arnold Schwarznegger as Superman, but that accent would be used against him. Then again, Lawrence Welk had a weird accent, and he grew up on a farm in the Midwest. So the story could say that Superman grew up on a farm next to Lawrence Welk, and that's how he got that accent ...
No kidding, it would be damn hard to cast this movie. Most of the younger actors are borderline gay. It's hard to think of a tough guy actor under the age of 25.

I'm not big into comics, but I just can't see how this is a legitimate fight.. Superman would kick Batman's ass. Up. Down. Around the block. Back around the block.

First, he can fly. That's a HUGE advantage. Second, he's really strong. Really REALLY strong. It's just not really that legit a fight. Even with kryptonite.. Superman can just stand a few miles away and evaporate Batman with his heat vision..

I just can't see it...

1. Time travel gives him an advantage.
2. The work required to accelerate an object with mass to the speed of light is infinite. So Superman isn't just "Really REALLY strong", he's "REALLY REALLY REALLY..." strong.
3. The universe doesn't seem to mind when Superman breaks the laws of physics.

In the original Justice League, you had all these super-human super heros and then Batman. He was like this sorta dark guy who was out for good, but also wasn't super righteous like the super-human guys. In the comic, he made sure he know everyone elses secret weekness, and was prepared to exploit it if need be. Now I haven't read all of these cause well, I haven't even seen most of them, but I've been informed by people who've read them, that in Super Man's case, Batman had a gun with kryptonite bullets or something along those lines. And also was able to figure out who Super Man's alter ego was. I also seem to recall that Batman knew were Super Man's ice cave was, but I'm a bit less certain about this bit.

Basically while Super Man is the definition of pure physical strength, Batman is the definition of pure cunning. Batman was a loner always, even when fighting for good, and as such mistrusted even his "super" friends, and was always ready to cover his own ass first if need be.

Agreed. Batman? Epitome of cunning? Hardly. One on one, No "bat utility belt", no kryptonite. One-on-one cage match. Guess who's pounded into the ground before the blink of an eye?

Here's the fight:

1) Batman makes the move on Supes. Too late: with his super-vision, Supes sees Batsy's muscles flex and with super-speed, moves in behind him. Before Batman has moved a millimeter, Superman has pulled his arms off, and pulled his legs off. Supes makes his way back to his original spot before the remaining torso hits the ground. In the next millisecond, Supes claps his hands together in a mighty "ka-boom!", shattering Batsy's eardrums.

2) Just as Batsy's pain receptors are informing him that his arms and legs have been torn off, Superman has decided to have a little fun: using his heat vision, he cauterizes the wounds, reducing Batman to little more than a worm. By now, about 2 seconds after the fight has begun, Batman's expression is one of pure dread, realizing that he's got as much chance as a flea against a freight train. The last thing Batsy sees is Superman giving him a light-speed 100 ton bitchslap.

For someone who can move faster than you can think, what good is thinking going to do you? Even if Batman was the greatest martial artist and acrobat in the world, what good would it do him? Superman would be pounding him into oblivion before he moved an inch. In a fight with raw power, Supes would win in a heartbeat. Actually, maybe 2 heartbeats.

Actually, what happened was that Batman was concerned that the JLA might run into a psychic/magical/superintelligent foe that would be able to control various members of the JLA using some sort of mind control. So, the Dark Knight figured out a way of neutralising each member of the JLA in the event that this occurred. Then R'as al Ghul managed to acquire this knowledge and defeated the JLA. This was detailed in the "Tower of Babel" run JLA issues 43-46. I believe it's in a trade paperback, as well. Great story. Additionally, there was the fallout when the JLA finally defeated R'as al Ghul (sorry to Lone Gunman it) and had to figure out what to do with someone as "dark" as Batman.

In the relatively recent JLA comic story arc writen by Mark Waid, called "Tower of Babel", a villain breaks into Batman's secret logs of all his teammates and uses it to systematically defeat every member of the Justice League of America.

Batman never talked about himself in the JLA, but often coaxed little pieces of information from his teammates. He secretly worked on "protocols" for defeating them. Batman made sure he could stop any of the JLA, and he thought they were foolish if they weren't doing the same.

His tactics:

Aquaman - Made him fear water, which he needs to live.
Green Lantern - Blinded him, leaving him unable to create anything with his ring
Flash - Created a vibration bullet that doesn't phase through the Flash, leaving him subjected to light speed epileptic seizures.
Wonder Woman - Subjected her to a virtual unending combat.
Martian Manhunter - Created nanites that embed themselves to his skin, making him a human flame (with fire being his weakness)
Plastic Man - Froze and shattered him

and of course...

Superman - Synthesized a red kryptonite, which left Superman in tremendous pain.

While Batman wasn't the one to use these tactics, his friends felt betrayed, cheated and physically scarred.

That was the worst synopsis ever. Did you even READ the bloody books? Hell, glancing at a wizard every now and then would give you a better clue about the details. It's the 'Tower of Babel' story line, and it's a decent, if fast paced yarn.

My educated guess is Superman punches Batman in the face during a superfriends reunion at a bar (open, free drinks for everyone) and starts to sing: ...Batman smells, Robin Laid an egg... after which Batman runs home and washes his cape and returns with a baseball bat, asking around for Superman who incidentally saw Batman returning, then ran in to the mens room and changed clothes into Clark Kent.

The next day Clark wakes up with a hangover and Batwoman and realises he is full of regrets. Batman eventually kills Sherlock Holmes after confusing him with Superman the same night.

The final script will be slightly fleshed out with further musical numbers by Danny Elfman but this is essentially the story of the movie according to my sources.

Seems to me like you guys don't know what you're talking about. Not just has Batman kicked Supes' ass in the Miller books (Not once, but twice!), but Mark Waid wrote Tower of Babel, a Justice League story arc where Batman basically took down the ENTIRE JUSTICE LEAGUE! Superman is a punk. There is a good reason why nobody buys his comic books -- he isn't interesting nor convenient to relate to. Batman has kicked Superman's ass when nobody else could because he uses human ingenuity. He also beat The Hulk, Spiderman, Spawn (One and a half times, because no real conclusion was reached in the Miller trade.), and Captain America, in Crossover books by Marvel and Image respectively. Even when an entire army of super-powered peoples, including Superman and Captain Marvel, were arrayed against Batman in Kingdom Come, he still got his way by building his own army and leading it. On top of all of that, after the JLA got their asses handed to them, and they kicked Batman out because they are all children, they had to ASK HIM BACK, because none of them were bright enough to solve any crimes, repel any invasions or coordinate the team in any other situations without Batman holding their virtually omnipotent hands!

You're right. This isn't a legitimate fight. Superman should take his tired old ass home and save Batman the trouble of showing him why his comic sales are down. My only question is why Smallville is a tv show. Where the hell is Gotham City?!!

Keeping this in mind, it's pretty much impossible to beat Superman twice, isn't it? If you kick his ass and he breaks loose, he'll turn back time and kick your ass preemptively. Or, truer to character, he'll alter things in his or your life to prevent you two ever coming together for the previous (future) battle. Funny how he never considers the danger of paradoxes or anything else related with time travel and altering 'the course of things'.

"The Game of Death" is the movie Bruce Lee was working on when he died (actually he started working on it, took a break to make "Enter the Dragon").

Bruce Lee was writing and directing, as well as starring in the movie, which was to deliver his philosophy and vision.Unfortunately his notes and storyboards were lost, and the movie that got released had very little resemblance to his original intent.Only about 30 minutes out of hundreds of hours of film were deemed suitable for release.

Amongst the tricks used to complete the film were, indeed, body doubles, as well as having Bruce's character off camera, having his fact blown off and even scenes shot with Bruce Lee Cardboard Cutouts.

A couple of years ago, the documentary "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey" was released. It contains the actual final scenes Bruce shot for "The Game of Death".They're somewhat incomplete, but they're well worth watching. The entire documentary is actually one of the best Bruce Lee documentaries out there - has a lot of archive footage and old interviews with him. My TiVo picked it up on TCM or AMC or something a few days ago, so it's probably floating around right now. Anyone interested in Bruce Lee or Martial Arts in general should definately attempt to catch it.

Why would Batman and Superman fight each other? That's just ludicrous. They're both Superfriends for crying out loud! Wouldn't Wonder Woman, Flash, or the Green Lantern try to break up the argument? Apache Chief will come in for the cameo with Wendy, Marvin, and Wonderdog.

I never did like the Batman movie series though. They're too "dark" and depressing. Besides, no movie with Prince music in it has ever been any good. Superman on the other hand is light and upbeat.. he's the all-American hero. Batman's just some depressed psycho loaner who just happens to be a millionaire playboy. Sorry, but I don't buy that act. If I've got millions of dollars I'm not going to be out avenging the wrong of the world, I'm going to be getting blowjobs from hot cheerleaders every day while attending massive parties. He really MUST be a nutcase and is clearly the bad guy.

It wasn't Bruce Lee, it was his son ,Brandon Lee, and the movie was "The Crow". Brandon was killed in a scene where he is standing on a table and everyone else in the room is shooting at him. Lesson learned there was even blanks can kill... In all the unfinished scenes which required facial shots (no, this isn't a porn) they digitally mastered his face onto the stunt double I believe.

Which, in my humble opinion, going to be a lot more interesting than a fanpiece like 'Superman Vs. Batman'. Well, if you get to make both, why not?

The problem with the Ender's Game movie is that the studio is apparently trying to submarine Petersen's efforts into getting a cast that he feels is realistic for the story. You can read the AICN rumour here: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=12681

Essentially, it boils down to the fact that Petersen wants to include a racially mixed cast to reflect the in-book and real-world race ratios at the time Ender's Game is supposed to be set. The studio has vetoed his plans claiming that white audiences won't want to go unless the adults in the movie are all white.

From the rumour:

He was flat out told "Not a chance in hell. There will be a handful of token characters from other races but every other child will be white." As the studio execs pointed out, if there are too many background characters that aren't white, white people will be afraid to go see it.

I think one of the strong points of both Ender novell's is the emphasis on how much damage prejudice against other people/races/species can do. They are both a heroic epic and a moral/ethics story. And that all combined in a believable SF package, I realy liked them for that. I would go see an Ender movie. I hope it doesn't get ruined by being produced in Holywood. I'm from europe, and the thing that always astonishes me in American TV-productions/movies, is that they either mostly white or mostly black. Is this how the USA works? Is it really this separated? OR is this just moviebosses "targeting" a specific audience? The only mixed films that come to my mind are those with Will Smith. just my 0.02

I forget where I saw this mentioned, but a potential conflict is the two philosophies of crime-fighting. Superman is more of a stereotypical do-gooder, whereas Batman is more like a dark vigilante.

The War of the Lance would be fucking AWESOME on the big screen. Make it a trilogy like Lord of the Rings!!! Then you could do the Test of the Twins series and follow it up with Dragons of Summer Flame and the War of Souls trilogy. It would be fucking fantastic. Much cooler than lame ass superdorks.

Damn. Preach on brother! I've been waiting for a Dragonlance movie for about 10 years. I remember old usenet posts about who would be cast in it. Unfortunately, Dragonlance has become a fricken Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs franchise rather than be remembered as a reasonable example of good fantasy. Should've stopped all the branch novels after the first set of the Tales series. Hmmph!

Oh well, someday. Mebbe in another 20 years.

Both are supposed to be crime-fighting hero's... what will be the premise? Will one of them become evil? Also, it seems terribly mis-matched. Sure Batman's got some cool gadgets but overall he's just a guy... not some superhuman goliath from another planet. Add to that Batman's is just a local crime fighter (Gotham city)... Superman has a wider range. I just think it would make more sense to do a movie of dueling bad-guys... not hero's. Perhaps a Freddie vs. Jason movie for example- or Lex Luther vs. Dr. Evil ;-)

Check out "The Dark Knight Returns", where Batman defeats Superman (using some Kryptonite, btw.)

Miller (the author) got it right; Batman is the world's greatest detective mind (nevermind one of the top martial artists in the world), and basically an all around genius.

Might might be right, but only when the dude holding the might doesn't get outsmarted, as Superman did in "The Dark Knight Returns"

Batman is the coolest superhero ever. Why? No superpowers. Brains, altheticism, and a raging case of vengance. What can be more powerful than that?

Frank Miller created an excellent graphic novel treating this very subject entitled "The Dark Knight Returns" Link. This is a story that I truly enjoyed as a life long Batman fan. If this new movie is based on Miller's vison, I say hooray. If not, then we will have to wait and see.

I was about to post that if it wasn't Miller writing the script that it would probably just suck all kinds of balls, especially for anyone who's actually read Dark Knight Returns, and the first installment of Dark Knight 2. I don't know what kind of battle they've got planned, but I can't imagine it topping either of the ones that Miller has written.

Besides stupid chick flicks like the "Ya-Ya Sisterhood" (fucking kill me now!), Hollywood has run out of ideas. We get the same damn actors (do we really need another Julia Roberts film?) in retread cartoons, sequels and classic remakes. I want something original, fresh and that doesn't include, "Dude, Where's my car?". I want more "Pulp Fiction", "The Big Lewbowski" and "Raising Arizona" originality because I am sick of Star Wars, Star Trek, Men In Black, etc. sequels.

Besides, this would be a better movie if it was Superman vs. Stephen Hawkings. Ok, I know, I am going to hell for that.

No good will come of this movie, all the actual readers (of both the novels and comics) will know that Batman would win, but the general public will just assume that Superman would win due to his powers and will argue this to no end. No matter how they write this film a large base of people will end up disapointed and out for blood.

For all our sakes, I hope all the slashdoter's who are interested in this movie go and read at least the Frank Miller stories. I have read both the Dark Knight Returns and its sequal, both of which are an amazing written story (I can't recommend it enough)

Reeve is out for obvious reasons - unless you modded him into a synthespian. But even while I liked Keaton as Batman - I wasn't to keen on Reeve as Superman - I don't think either of them would be good in this sort of movie.

I see the premise and I can't help but think of Miller's "Dark Night" books and wonder who could fill the role. I could see a - much - younger Brian Dennehy playing Batman.

But what about Supe? There were rumours a year or two about abut Nick Cage putting on the red cape, but I just couldn't see that. Chris O'Donnell is aging well. Maybe someone like Vince Vaughn. That role is a tougher one to fill.

Ideas?

clooney might have been a better batman, but joel schumacher's directing was all wrong for the batman movies. in my opinion it was schumacher's wrong headed directing and the studio's insistance on milking the batman franchise for every last bit of license income that wrecked the franchise.

The original superman movies are what...20+ years old. I kinda' doubt that Warner even took into account the fact that there may be a couple of forty+ year olds that still think that superman should be the same guy he was in the seventies. Most of their target audience was probably born during or after the first and only real superman movie. Many of them associate Superman with either Dean Cain or the guy on smallville.

the punisher is a gay homosexual..'nuff said. anyone remeber the marvel vs dc series a few years back? Some of the fights weren't even fair at all. Superman totally some Hulk nuts. I think the worst part though, was that some of the more interesting fights were single panels, just to push along the whole marvel/dc mixed up worlds. I would have given my left nut to see Batman vs Venom. Although, the Thor vs Capt Marvel was pretty cool.

And that's to get Frank Miller to write (or re-write) the script. The Batman/Superman encounter in Return of the Dark Night was excellent. Also, if they paired him with M. Night Shay*an. Unbreakable was just about the best superhero movie ever. I doubt the producers will have the insight to do either though.

Feh. Miller's greatest, most compelling character, Daredevil, could take Batman any day. And he's blind. Too bad that DD's silver screen debut has the awful Ben Affleck as our hero...sigh. The Miller series w/Elektra, Bullseye, and the reporter, uhhh Ben Urich, is my all time fave. DK and the current DK2 are terrific as well. Miller is just the bomb.

Best Graphic Novel of the 80's, except maybe for the Watchmen. Avoids the official DC continuity: middle-aged Wayne, out of the superhero action since Robin killed by Joker. Superman is eventually called back from war against the commies to rein in Batman's illegal vigilantism. They fight, and Batman kicks whitey Superman's Ass. My summary is inadequate, as it's been 15 years since I read The Dark Knight Returns. The (what, 200+ page?) graphic novel was much more powerful than any comic book I had ever bothered to pick up before or since. Check out the entry at everything2. I hoped each of the Batman movies would try to capture the depth of emotion - the grief, the guilt, the fear, and the savage violence that drive's Frank Miller's Dark Knight. Maybe this is it...

Batman is the coolest superhero ever. Why? No superpowers. Brains, altheticism, and a raging case of vengance. What can be more powerful than that?

If you recall when Batman first fought the leader of the Mutants gang, same 4 issue series, he got his butt kicked and barely got away. Next time he used his brains to win (also, just barely). Seems Bats relies a bit more on luck, as he pretty much needs to.

About there my reading of the whole thing ended, but in another setting (i.e. not during the era of a 60-something Batman) it would have to be something of a political nature, to make any sense and be somewhat consistent with the current direction of both comics, BUT(!), never rule out the possibility (and entire likelihood) that Hollywood comes through and places both characters completely at odds with everything they have been and pull some lame (i.e. Dallas' Bobby Ewing's death dream) story, which is totally full of holes and dismisses generations of fans opinion of "how things should be" (a la Mission Impossible movie, bleahh(!))

Now, what I'd like to know is when there's going to be an Aliens vs Predator movie (yeah, been comics and books, but it could still be pretty darn cool) if done well and with a decent director (paging Ridley Scot, paging Ridley Scott!) 8-)

Oh, I've already decided that Hollywood will destory every childhood institution I love, and this will be no exception.

They always need to dumb down the story to appeal to a wider audience, and this will always burn the purists like me. (Well, okay, not _always always_, but a good 95% of the time.) When they do maintain the integrity of the comic (like Ghost World), they're too scared of mass marketing it, and nobody sees it.

It certainly has a potential for good political commentary.

Batman's big beef against Superman in the Dark Knight series was that Superman was a bit too boy-scouty, a bit too flag-wavingly patriotic. Too much of a political tool. Too much Law and Order, not enough Justice. Batman was perceived to have "crossed the line" and Superman was sent to reign him in.

In this post 9/11 PATRIOT Act Globalization Corporate Facism Goth/geek-profiling-from-Columbine-aftermath world (heh, I beat Jon Katz to the punch with THAT one) - there's EXCELLENT fodder for political commentary. Too bad the spineless wussies will probably shelve that idea.

Typically it's been the Dems (conservative southerners?) going after Hollywood for making gratuitous violent/obsene/whatever movies just to rake in the bucks, while making sure enough high profile ones get enough campaign $$$ to ensure nothing which really sticks comes out of washington. Now, assume Hollywood _DID_ make a post 9/11 Batman vs. Superman, where W. is painted with the same brush that Reagan was in DK (Reagan was painted as a reckless warmonger who was the first to head to his bomb shelter when the Russians launched a nuclear counter-attack) and you can bet the next time some legislation concerning restricting TV/Games/Movies/Radio comes up, it'll have more support than Reps and moderates usually give it.

Shelve that idea? WTF? Hollywood scriptwriters, and most Hollywood people in general, share your anti-American opinions. The biggest box office draw, Tom Cruise, said "I think the U.S. is terrifying" and considers the USA an unfit environment in which to raise his children. There's plenty of anti-everything sentiment in popular movies...the single example I will cite is the deep green pro-human-genocide message in "The Matrix".
I certainly expect Superman's message of TJAW to be thoroughly fouled and shown to be horribly wrong when the movie comes out. Hollywood engages in anti-conservative (NOT liberal) political commentary every chance it gets...

I think you made his point. The movie will be very black and white; these blockbusters dont really actually have much to say in terms of a serious political discourse.

You've just basically gone ahead and pointed out that the hollywood blockbusters never really ponders an idea; they go ahead and tell you whats right, whats wrong, and its fairly evident to see how they like to criticise the right. (Although, why shouldn't they, they are artists (even if really really commercial ones))

Thats not really criticism, as other movies fill the role of being unjudgemental about their subjects .. its just harder to find 'em. :P

In the Batman apocrypha The Dark Knight Returns, Superman and Batman fight because Superman believes Batman killed the Joker (after the Joker had killed lots and lots of people.).
I didn't like The Dark Knight Returns, or many of the Batman comics I've read. But I really like Batman the Animated Series. I remember having a subscription to Legends of the Dark Knight which I kept hoping would improve, and every month being bitterly disappointed. (Yes, even with Gothic...) Why? Why wasn't it as good as the animated series?!?!
I'd rather watch Superman versus the old school Incredible Hulk. That fight would make sense... But I don't want to see any of this stuff in a live action movie, which I wouldn't see anyway. (MPAA Bad)

The first thing you have to realize is that there isn't any, "OK, here's what happened..." answer. Superman and Batman (in comics) are separate storylines, directed by separate creative teams. Each has its own loose continuity; but as the books change hands over the years, different artists and writers come and go, and many try to stake out their own territory by (1) writing continuity-altering events into the present, or (2) revising the past.

First, a nameless thug gunned down Bruce Wayne's parents. Then, a team came along and named that character ("Joe Chill"), and wrote a confrontation between the Chill and Batman ("Batman: Year Two"). Then another team came along and wrote a story that said, "No, actually, it wasn't Joe Chill after all..." And then, of course, the 1989 movie came along, and said, "Hey, it wasn't a nameless thug who killed the Waynes. It was the Joker." Back and forth. "Suspension of disbelief" is very important. :-)

There have been all sorts of confrontations between Batman and Superman in comics throughout the years. The basic conflict boils down to this: Batman is a dark, obsessed character. He distrusts everyone, and is your basic control freak. Superman, on the other hand, is your basic "good guy": He wants to save everybody from everything, and doesn't want anything in return. Batman doesn't trust Superman 'cause Batman doesn't trust anyone; and Superman doesn't trust Batman 'cause Batman's obsessed, and could fly off the handle at any time -- quite possibly killing someone.

Charitable writers have teamed up the pair in the past, but it's never a "comfy" team-up. At the end of the day, Batman always knows he has a chunk of kryptonite hidden away in his Batcave, just in case Superman (who is an alien, after all) gets out of control. Other writers have played up the conflict, usually using Batman's obsessive side as catalyst. Example: Gotham City was destroyed by an earthquake, and Superman wanted to help the citizens. Batman told his to get out of "my city" (his words). Several writers have referenced a standing agreement on the part of other superheroes: They stay out of Gotham, unless their help is specifically requested by Batman.

As far as the loose continuity goes, there isn't any standing grudge between Batman and Superman. They don't get along very well, but they work together respectfully when they have to. There's no backstory that involves any sort of huge blowout. Every big fight they've had has occurred outside the continuity. (Several readers have referenced Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" storyline. This took place far in Batman's future. The story begins with Batman's return from retirement, and Miller introduces familiar characters who have undergone huge changes during the story's course.)

I doubt they'll make an actual "Batman Battles Superman" movie. More likely, the two will have some rivalry, but eventually team up to destroy...Brainiac, or the Joker, or the Clock King, or whomever the hell the producer decides to cast. Personally, I think it'd be REALLY cool to see Adam West in a major role, maybe as Ra's al Ghul -- one of Batman's lesser-known but major foes. ...Hope I helped.

According tp the IMDB's "Celebrity News" the director wants Matt Damon. Here's the relevant text:

Matt Damon may get his choice of playing either Batman or Superman in a new movie that brings the comic book superheroes together - as enemies. Moviemaker Wolfgang Petersen has signed up to direct Batman vs. Superman for a 2004 release, and he wants Damon among his stars. The director says, "Matt's an interesting action man and a hell of an actor." The Perfect Storm director jumped at the chance to make the new movie because he likes the idea of pitting two heroes against each other. He says, "It's a clash of the titans. They play off each other so perfectly - Superman is clear, bright, all that is noble and good, and Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side. It'll make for great drama."

Oh dear god. And here we see how Hollywood funding works. Title, Director, headline name, cha-CHING, fill in the blanks (including concept and script) later. How can Matt Damon be ideal for both roles? Does he get to pick his favourite, and then they just cast the other? What if he changes his mind after filming starts? We know (from the way he dumped Minnie Driver via an announcement on Oprah ) that he's an arrogant, self important prick. How smart is it to give him license to dictate and decide terms on a project like this, and what does it say about the artistic vision of the director that his image of both characters has the same face?

The more that I hear about this, the more I become convinced that this will be just another tedious by-the-numbers banker. No tough decisions, no risk. The only possible point of interest is how they'll cripple Superman so that they can work in the inevitable fist fight. I rather suspect that we'll just see the Dark Knight Returns scene, lifted out of context.

I haven't read DKR, but while some writer can set up a situation where Batman wins, the odds are still in Superman's favor. The ONLY way Batman can win is with kryptonite, and unless Superman is suckered, he can fry Bats with heat-vision long before Bats got in range to use the kryptonite.

Heh, i think i remember once seeing an episode when Superman looks at batman with his x-ray vision, and sees he's Bruce Wayne, and tells him something like "go home bruce" (trying to impress bruce by letting him know that he knew who he was, etc), and later, when superman gets to his appartment and 'changes' into Clark kent, he looks out the window and sees batman on the roof across the street, looking with a pair of binoculars and a smile that said "yeah, i bet now you feel *really* dumb".

Superman is a sissy.. never kills anyone, and when he does, he makes a drama out of it. And besides, it's too much like Captain America.. he's too.. american :) (don't get mad at me.. it's just that i get tired sometimes of watching the us flag on the tv screen like it was a desktop wallpaper or something..)

Batman just plain rocks.. and Alan Grant was did the best scripts for it.

What AOL/TW really needs to do is to get off their asses and do some more things with their animated super hero serei. I'm sorry but just about every live-action Batman movie I've seen can't hold a candle to a single half-hour episode of Batman: The Animated Series. Give us a JL movie or another Batman Beyond or something!

Just looking at the way the live-action Batman movies WB has put out portrays the villans (the Joker, the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Bane, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, etc.) and then looking at how those same characters have been done in the animated series... can anybody honestly tell me that they're really looking forward to another live-action movie? What they did to Mr. Freeze and Bane alone should be reason to shudder with fear...

Interesting. He might make a decent Batman - he's actually got the acting ability to pull off a proper tortured Bruce Wayne. Unlike some other Batman impersonators we've seen (Clooney - the shiny-happy Batman).

I still think Val Kilmer was the best Batman we've yet seen. Perhaps it was the writing, perhaps the direction, but I didn't really dig Keaton as The Bat.

Actually, in that movie, they were all from Buenos Aires. Argentinians and Uruguayans are, for the most part, a mix of Spanish and Italian, all European, all white.

Thats why I think this movie will be a bad idea, it cannot cature to both the hardcore comic readers and the common public. The actual comic readers would know that Batman would most likely win (or at least kick the daylights out of superman) while the common public wont be able to get past the idea that since superman has powers and batman does not, then it will be an easy victory for superman.

I suggest that a comprimise already exists lower down the discussion page: Cast Bruce Campbell as Superman.

This will effectively allow you to please everyone. Batman can beat the daylights out of Bruce, and in the end Bruce can dispatch Batman using a chainsaw or shotgun and make a smart-alec quip. Viola, the general public gets what it expects and all the hardcore fans will be too busy messing themselves to care about what would "really" happen.

The popularity of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon seems to indicate the American audiences may be willing to accept women as competent, powerful fighters. But I wonder if that acceptance wasn't because the whole movie was supposed to be a fantasy (with the flying and all). What do slashdotters think about the popularity of a serious big-budget Hollywood superheronie movie? You think people would go to see it?

Superman doesn't really fight very well, either. I suspect it's just always been too easy for him -- it's like always practicing Quake with the bots set on the lowest possible level.

Effective tactics for Superman: Zip up to Batman at light speed and make balloon animals out of his small intestines tied together with his spinal cord. Do this very quickly -- preferably while the "get kryptonite from utility belt" message is still en route from Batman's brain to his hand.

But nooo... He's just got to showboat. That, plus a certain amount of writer irony, is what gets him in trouble.

Hmmm. Given that this isn't going to be Dark Knight Returns or Kingdom Come, they might as well start over with a new (or a Next, ahem) generation of actors. Superman requires a wholesome, All-American actor.

Honestly, can you imagine anyone better than Wil? You could just see him on a Young Republican recruitment poster, and most people will remember him as the too good to be true "I'll-save-the-day!" Wesley Crusher.

Kick the campaign off, it'll get my name on it. Or maybe I just want to see him in a skintight unitard again.

I think Superman and Batman would be a better movie idea than Superman vs. Batman. After all, both being crime fighters and "fighters for justice", neither one of them can be protrayed in a really negative light. And a 2 hour "misunderstanding" in which they kiss and make up at the end would be really lame.

Keaton was FAR AND AWAY the best Batman, and teh first two movies are teh only good ones in teh series. This has to do with Keaton's flavor, acting ability, and focus on the darker side fo the character, but also owes as much to the writing and the direction of Burton.

Not sure if you remember correctly, but Burton backed out on the 3rd movie (studio wanted a lighter kiddie flick and he refused) and Keaton refused to do it without Burton.

As a result of all this, the series turned to crap from 3 on, with stupid wise ass lines ("chicks dig the suit") and excellent enemis utterly WASTED. I mean, Bane as Poison Ivy's SIDEKICK?!? WTF IS THAT?!? This is the guy who broke Batman's back over his friggin KNEE, and he's taking orders from the flower chick?!? And then there was all that talk about nipples on teh batsuit... I mean, what the hell are these people thinking? Why not just create a "baththong" and throw in a couple of dressing room scenes? Gotta make sure you have that extra crotch protection.

The truth is that the first movie blew all the others out of the case with great direction, great actors (Jack rocked as well), great writing, and a willingness to show the dark knight as the tortured and nebulous soul he actually is.

As others have pointed out, in a raw "cage match" with no kryptonite, no bat belt, superman would only have to hit Batman one time and game over.

Nope, Batman carried a gun briefly, in the '30s when the comic first started. By the '50s Batman was terribly clean cut and ethical (read boring), much more so than the current "Dark Knight" version.

Sadly, Hollywood's taste is so bad that I think this flick will simply be a 'Who would win?' type of movie. Unfortunately, that's not an interesting subject for reasons that people have already posted here.

Instead, they should develop the movie that gives you deeper insights into each character, taking the plot away from the 'whos gonna win?' direction. To put it another way: If you find out that Batman wins, it shouldn't ruin the movie for you.

With that said, why not explore what could possibly make these two guys fight? What kind of ethical questions would that provide for Superman? What could possibly happen to make the Man of Steel defeat somebody who, like himself, has made his life's work to protect people?

How would Batman feel about having the opportunity to deal the death blow to Superman? In light of how his parents were killed, how could he bring himself to destroy somebody that undoubtedly would have prevented it if he could?

They both had their parents killed tragically, they have that pain in common. Could they come to a resolution?

In any case, with questions like these (or hopefully more interesting ones, I am not a writer heh) the movie could actually be rather meaningful. If the movie tries to be like Spiderman and is written to show of using the latest effects to have two 'super humans' battle it out, then there's no way it's going to but much more than a jock flick.

I hope somebody puts some interesting thought into this. Both characters are deep enough that they could tell a fascinating story. This really is the type of movie that should be animated. It's hard to take a guy seriously when he's wearing bright blue underwear.

There seems to be a lot of assumption that this movie would cast Batman and Superman as enemies.
I would hope that it would not be a movie where we are expected to cheer one and jeer the other.
I expect it to be that both of them unite against a common enemy, but fall out over each others methods.
Perhaps Batman gets pissed that Superman was off saving a cat from up a tree while the villain was making his get-away. Or Superman gets the hump when Batman gets a little too vicious in extracting information from the villain's cronies. Either way, something like this would make for a better movie than pitching them as enemies.

Now the movie I'd REALLY like to see would be Martial Law vs The X-Men.

First, Batman is way cooler than Superman.. I mean, some alien kid that looks _exactly_ human yet has amazing powers and saves the world all the time is cool enough, but Batman is just that much cooler because he doesn't save the freakin world all the time, and he's not perfect, he has more than 1 flaw (read: superman is only vulnerable to kryptonite, a truly rare ore, yet it somehow always shows up at the wrong time, yet there's NONE on Earth so where is it coming from blah blah) and Batman's women are just hotter. Period.

Not to knock on the S-man, but I seriously doubt this would make a good movie, especially if superman 'wins' the battle, or whatever.

Second, they're both GOOD guys. Batman is not evil, he does what he does for the good of Gotham, and if you're going to make one of the two go bad I would think Superman is a better choice -- use a 'kryptonite voodoo doll from Superman's home planet' or something, but don't make BATMAN THE EVIL ONE..

If they think of some cheesy reason for Batman to go evil I can garauntee this movie will be eye-candy without much real plot or emotion... and not worth 10 dollars.

Third,

Omg there are so many better pairs of archvillain/monsters vs. good guys/heroes than saying either Batman or Superman has gone evil and now one of em has to beat the other... That's just counterproductive, and downright lame.

I want to see Aliens vs. Predator vs. Batman, not Superman vs. Batman, that's just too much MAN.

Besides, just compare their wardrobes... Batman wins hands down.

I see this running like every crossover comic ever written:

Reel 1: Batman and Superman cross paths, get in each other's way and fight, messing each other up but neither taking home a definitive win. Kiss another Batplane goodbye.

Reel 2: Villians gang up on Batman and Superman.

Reel 3: Batman and Superman team up and defeat villians.

For a good idea of what I mean, see the 3-part World's Finest comic that Steve Rude illustrated for DC a few years back. It rocked.

Of course, for Joe Sixpack, "Batman vs. Superman" is a better title than "World's Finest," since Joe Sixpack doesn't get the reference to the old teamup title from the fifties.

Lastly, while I wish Christopher Reeve all the best, he wasn't the first actor to play Superman, and he won't be the last. It might be nice to get Gene Hackman back as Lex Luthor, though.

How the heck does a missle hit this guy? He flies fast enough to travel through time but he can't avoid or destroy a freakin' missle with his heat vision, super breath or by throwing something at it really hard???

I must confess, I've not much of a comics guy, although in my youth...talking 60's and early 70's here...I read a buttload of Spiderman, DareDevil and Incredible Hulk. I suspose I read and watched my share of Batman as well (was Adam West hillarious as Batman or what!!!).

I read all the posts about outsmarting the super dude, but I just don't buy it. When you can move as fast as he can, are as strong as he is along with all the other powers it just don't add up.

Batman vs. Superman just ain't a fight.

I could maybe buy Batman assasinating Superman, if he snuck up on him when he was on the crapper or something...ummm, Superman does crap doesn't he?

Well, in The Dark Knight Returns Superman is caught in a nuclear explosion caused by a bomb designed to induce a devestatingly large EMP. He winds up looking like a shrivelled up corpse. After falling to the ground, he manages to reconstitute himself using the stored energy in the local plant life. When Batman releases the X-ray hunting missles, they hit Superman because he hadn't fully recovered yet. (There's a line like "He'd have to be at his top speed to avoid them. I watch them kick him around a bit. I've had worse." - Gotta love Batman.)
Batman's goal wasn't to kill Superman, but merely to give him a taste of what it was like to lose, to have someone's hands at his throat. Superman could have defeated Batman easily, but he was taking it easy.

The Superman VS. Batman Story is from the Dark Knight Returns series of graphic Novels by Frank Miller. Along with having a (new)female robin, (The old Robin [Dick Grayson I beleave] moved on to become NightWing(?) hehe, this is going way back)... Superman gets a serious beating from Batman.. In the end when Batman and Superman do go at it, Batman gets the help of the (at that time one-armed) Green Arrow(??) which uses a special green(?whichever one makes him mortal?) kryptonite Powdered tip to weaken Superman. Then Batman gets all kung-fu samuari on him and ends up beating Superman Bloody.. A beautiful moment in comics.. I personally always liked the big B (frank miller style) more than Stuperman ;). ah, the good ol' days...

My favorite evidence of Superman's speedy brain was in an old Radioshack promotional comic book I picked up in the early 1980's. It posed a division problem involving large integers to Superman and the almighty TRS-80. Superman could solve the problem in his head and write the solution on a chalkboard in the time between pressing enter on the TRS-80's keyboard and the appearance of the result on the monitor.

Well.. what wasn't mentioned is Batman did have a wee bit of an advantage in the Miller books.

Superman had just recently been at ground zero of a multi-megaton nuclear bomb, one that kicked up enough dust that there was next to no sunlight getting through to the earth. Being that sunlight is what powers Superman, he was in a weakened condition to begin with.

Plus, Superman didn't actually want to kill Batman - he was just there to "bring him in", and considering that Batman was in his elder years in the DKR, Superman was probably holding back considerably.

Mix this with Batman being in a veritable tank of a suit and using Superman's known weaknesses (such as they are) including electricity, sonics, and of course kryptonite (which in the words of the comic "The stuff took years and millions of dollars to synthesize, but luckily I had both")

Put it all together and you wound up with a situation where Batman could beat Superman.. if only just barely.

I really liked "Unbreakable" as a truly unusual treatment of the whole superhero thing. I guess most people didn't, because it didn't do that well at the box office.

In the same vein, I couldn't imagine Michael Keaton as Batman. He did well enough there, but his portrayal as Bruce Wayne was downright terrific. First time the character ever seemed believable, comic, TV, cartoon, whatever.

From what I hear, he got the role because of the foreward he wrote for Kevin Smith's latest Daredevil book. So hopefully, Affleck will have some real intrest in playing a good Matt Murdock.

Also, word around the campfire is that the movie is going to be based mostly on Miller's "Man Without Fear" book.

I'm still more excited about Batman: Year One, but both of them are going to put this Batman vs Superman shlock to shame.

I have a theory/pointscore system about superhero conversions to the big screen, which my best friend (a comic geek, btw) generally agrees with (not that that provides me any REAL basis for it). While, I'm not a big comic fan, I read them occasionally. Also, my comic depth of knowledge is pretty slim, so the whole theory has BIG holes in it. Maybe an expert or two here can help...

It should be noted that there are some obvious missing films in the list, such as the last Superman film George Reeves did in 1973, the 1966 Batman film and the Spider-Man films of the 1970s/80s. I also haven't included made for TV films, such as the Lynda Carter "Wonder Woman" efforts. I have stuck principally to the films which caught public attention, not those which the fan community is the principal consumer of... (spurious, but it helps my argument).

Here's how it goes:
- there are, strictly speaking, two principal sources for superheroes - DC and Marvel
- over the years, bigscreen translations of superheroes have drawn their characters from one of these two sources
- if we count back over my lifetime (1968- ), we have a number of successful and unsuccessful conversions. Based on the following pointscore system, Marvel are far and away the winner so far.
System
- Box office/general public success - 1 point. i.e. Did it's original box office and subsequent rental business (less so) make back more than the cost of the film? This is a pretty good indicator of whether the "general public" liked/went to see the film.
- Fan base success - 1 point. i.e. Did the fan community, who really care about this character/story embrace the film? Personally, this is a better indicator of success to me.
So, the maximum a movie can score is two points. Points are shown as one of four possible combinations - 0/0, 0/1, 1/0 and 1/1

Of course, this begs the question, "What is it about Marvel superheroes that makes their big screen conversions successful where DC conversions have on average been pretty ordinary?"

As stated, my logic and the sample are pretty dodgy, but it's just an observation...

you're forgetting some marvel movies in there. all the bad ones, in fact. for instance:

captain america (1979)
captain america ii: death too soon (1979)
the incredible hulk returns (1988)
the punisher (1989)
the fantastic four (1994) (it was so bad it was never released.)

granted the first three are tv movies, so ignore them if you see fit. but that's by no means a full list, either. there's plenty that i'm missing. and wasn't "howard the duck" marvel?

not to mention that i have some serious complaints about some of those films you list as "fan successes". every comic book movie to date has destroyed large aspects of the comics ("gwen stacy? who's that?") and i don't expect much better from daredevil, and the rest of the upcoming pack of comic flicks.

Now the news is that Brendan Fraser might be the lead guy for the next Superman edition. An interesting choice to say the least.

I really don't wanna see the TV Superman guy in the movies. He was just a wuss.
For Batman they need someone different than the previous types that played the role. The news about the movie is that Superman is the goody type and Batman is more dark, vengeful. So if they can pull this off, it'll spin Spider-Man in its own web.

I think I must have picked up the other DK2 series then because in mine the only thing worse than the art is the story line. I want that version you are reading. badly.

My big beef with the story is that while it's working some of the angles correctly (Luthor taking over the world with Brainiac without anyone ever really noticing and keeping Clark as his puppy) it's getting stupider by the issue. The "Superchicks" was the dumbest turn that thing could have taken and I've spent too much time trying to imagine it getting worse to be persuaded otherwise.

We're going to overthrow the big bad with three Spice Girls dressed as classic superhero women? I don't think so.

Dark Knight Returns should have been left alone and been left to serve as what it was intended before Miller decided he needed a hit. It should have been the end of the myth.

I can't believe some idiot wanted to cast Nicholas Cage for Superman (rumored at one point), that's just WRONG. In any case... needs to be mid-to-late 20's, and excessively clean-cut.

I always thought Tom Selleck for Batman, Chuck Heston for commissioner Gordon, Mila Jovovich for Robin, Alec Baldwin (very slimmed down) for Superman. Selleck's got the athleticism, Heston the gravity, Jovovich the screwed-up-ed-ness to want to even be Robin and Baldwin's got that pompous blowhardness about him that Superman had in DKR.

The studios, MPAA and other AAs are killing original art by recycling comic books into movies into DVDs/CDs into TV shows and back again.

Why not just shoot the artists and get it over with. They're not paying them dirt as it is anyway...

Considering a lot of Wolfgang's other movies ("Das Boot", "In The Line Of Fire", "Perfect Storm"), I think he'd be the right man to make sure this doesn't become a fanpiece. I'm hoping it will make both "heroes" look like crazies: Batman a little too much of a vigilante, Superman too much of a hypocritical "boy scout".

My guess is that we'll see them holding each other in contempt, growing into hate. And the climatic battle will be broken off so that a greater threat can be averted (or they look at the collateral damage they caused and turn away in disgust). No winners.

Then again, AOLTimeWarner is not gonna let Mr. Petersen do a ruined downtown, especially not in a post-11.09.01 climate.

Unbreakable was good, but it simply couldn't live up to the hype generated as "from the director/writer of The Sixth Sense". I'm hoping that Shyamalan doesn't pull the same trick in Signs -- a last second twist.

It was a good movie though, and the twist did do some gut wrenching. But perhaps a bit overwrought.

As for Keaton - nobody thought he'd be a good Wayne/Batman... but he played it right, much as Toby Wright did. You don't have to play the superhero -- that's merely a foil for the really interesting story, which is that of a man (or woman) who has immense power. And what that does to the person.

All of the later Batman movies failed because the actors tried to play the hero instead of the average guy. The script writers also focused too much on the hero instead of how the person is handling the issues.

Really this is a good bit of the "comic book curse" that afflicts non-written attempts to do superheros right.

Heh, i think i remember once seeing an episode when Superman
looks at batman with his x-ray vision, and sees he's Bruce Wayne, and
tells him something like "go home bruce" (trying to impress bruce
by letting him know that he knew who he was, etc), and later, when
superman gets to his appartment and 'changes' into Clark kent, he
looks out the window and sees batman on the roof across the street,
looking with a pair of binoculars and a smile that said "yeah, i
bet now you feel *really* dumb".

Totally, I remember that episode. That was good. There was a colloration in
the comic series. I believe it was "Death in The Family", where the second
Robin got beaten to death with a crowbar, (the possible start of the animosity
smoldering between Batman and Superman) when Superman was ordered by the state
dept to stop Batman from going apeshit. Superman was being apologetic and said
"Bruce" to Batman, trying to make a connection and all that. Batman turns
around and says "Never call me that name again....Kent." Tit for tat.

For starters, The Dark Night Returns is bullshit, if Superman can move betweem 10,000-1,000,000 times faster than a baseline human, then he would have to be able to think that much faster than a baseline human. Forget how smart Batman is, it's nothing compared to someone who has somewhere between 10,000 and 1,000,000 times the subjective time you have to think about something. Remember the scene in Spiderman when Peter is fighting Flash Thompson in the hall and has time to relax and obviously consider the weirdness of it all during the time that Flash has to throw one punch. Now take that and multiply it by 1,000 or so and you get some fraction of how much faster Superman is. Holy crap! bullets are like still life to him! Has anybody seen Smallville? Clark can move freakishly fast in that show, and he's not remotely as powerful as full-grown Superman. Speed alone kills Batman, not to mention an inhuman IQ, super-strength (Supes once fought the ENTIRE JLA including Batman in the comics, and even though he was restraining himself, gave them a wicked beating.) Well, I could go on, but basically anybody who depends on The Dark Night Returns as their source for the Superman/Batman fight is nothing more than a deluded Batman sycophant. So there! And Rambo can beat Rocky any day too! Hello, Rambo's got a gun ya dork!

I tell ya, this movie has the potential to be really good. Now is it going to be good ... No. The only way it could be good would be to follow the Dark Knight story. But the story doesn't lend itself to film so it would have to be changed and BANG we're back to a sucky movie. Now IMHO if you want a Batman vs. someone movie you need only look as far as Batman vs. Grendel for your script. Grendel has the same super powers as batman (ie. None) but is much smarter than Batman with about the same wealth. However Grendel is evil, like the Joker, and the story's already been written It ends in a tie. So my vote... SuperDork is out Grendel is in.

First off, let's get one thing straight. There has never been an appropriate physical casting of the Batman character, from Adam West to the modern Batman movies. (Michael Keaton? Val Kilmer? -- oh, give me a fscking break. Adam West did the job better than they did.) Batman's comics over the last 8 years (including the seminal work "The Dark Knight Returns" (TDKR)) amply demonstrates the lack in our movies. Someone close to Arnie's stature is needed, although they would need to be less brawny and more limber, since Batman's a noted martial artist. I mention Arnie since, not only is he of a55-kicking size, but he seems to act out high-society roles well enough. If only we had a white Wesley Snipes, eh? -- his fitness, appearance and demeanor are well suited to the Batman role.

As for Superman's casting ... physically this was well enough done by Christopher Reeves. But that was then. Modern portrayals of Superman and Clark Kent make the character a larger man -- a commanding presence by most standards. Even if Mr. Reeves wasn't disabled, he couldn't fulfill the role anymore; his over-characterization of a simpering, milquetoast Clark Kent is also no longer required. In my opinion, Hollywood would have to find someone who could fit the physical description of Superman in the "Kingdom Come" comics. Arnie could do it. Vin Diesel isn't tall enough; and frankly his facial features more befit a street punk than a yuppie superhero. The Rock? -- puh-leeze ... he needs to prove he can handle a dramatic role (heyyy, stop laughing).

The movie has great promise (which I'll explain) and it has enough material to work from. Pitting Batman against Superman has already been done, not only in several instances throughout their comics series, but primarily in TDKR. At least, there's always some sort of a low-level leadership struggle going on, as illustrated by many Justice League comics.

If the movie is to be in any way loyal to the fan base, it must seize the potential inherent in the strife between the characters. It'll have to demonstrate the low-level leadership struggles, and if outright hostilities commence, then the philosophical generators of the characters will have to be as follows ....

Superman is portrayed as having immense, godlike power while well controlled by a good heart. His approach is a typical, mythical Americanism: use overwhelming force and do not compromise basic principles. He values life over anything else and is willing to die for it. He lives two lives, in harmony.

Batman is the dark side of Americana (Superman's shadow in more ways than one): the hard, intellectually driven need for skill, order, justice and outright revenge. He's constantly under tension between his public (socialite) and private (crusader) personas. And like Superman, he also values life over anything else and is willing to die for it.

Superman's overwhelming force and good nature can always be countered by Batman's calculating application of knowledge and technology. The comics bring up this theme time and time again. This theme's fertile ground for good storytelling -- the question is, will the movie be cultivated there?

Read Tower of Babel. You are wrong. Smallville is also a terrible show, so why you quote that as a source on a subject intended for a completely different demographic, I don't know. it is only in existence to make money on a franchise that has been failing for ten years (Superman). That is sort of like using Buffy as a source for Vampire the Masquerade, or Charmed as a source for real-world knowledge on wicca. And to try to bring "real-world" consequences of superpowers into a conversation about comics is silly. NOT ONCE, UNDER ANY WRITER, has Superman ever thought faster than your average high-school linebacker. And the linebacker would have a better concept of strategy and group-tactics! That is why Batman makes all of the plans for the JLA, and has for decades now.

Well, I think that might be an "NBA height". I haven't stood next to him, but he doesn't look that tall. In any case, I think Superman needs to be at least a six-footer. Christopher Reeve is listed at 6' 4", and that actually looks accurate. And yes, they could probably make him look taller, but I don't think Superman should be wearing platform shoes. It also might be nice if Superman weighed more than a buck thirty.

That's part of the problem. Christopher Reeve made the role his own. Dean Cain and Tom Welling have just been playing in his shadow. Reeve was so right for the character (as drawn) that anyone else will look awkward and unconvincing in comparison.

So, why not take advantage of that? Superman and Batman have historically been drawn with similar physiques, but that's comic convention. Both Dark Knight and Kingdom Come played on Superman's godlike aspect, but I seriously doubt whether we're going to see anything like an adaptation of either of those, given the title.

Given the title, we're just going to see a conflict. For conflict, you need difference. The difference is largely in attitude and methods, but what's wrong with a difference of appearance as well? Batman needs a big physique. Superman doesn't. I'm picturing the dramatic potential of having a slight Superman that can physically intimidate a bulky Batman. That's an instant illustration that a conflict between these two characters cannot be the movie convention of two big men flexing and posturing and sweating testosterone. Superman is a misnomer; he's not human, not a man, and there's no reason to have him conform to the stereotypical macho man physique, other than habit and convention.

Given the popularity of Alias, if Jennifer Garner doesn't get an Elektra spinoff from Daredevil then I'll be very surprised. However, if she does then I'll be very disappointed, but I'll be in a minority, I suspect.

Or, go and look at the plethora of rumours about a Wonder Woman movie. Front runner though is Sandra Bullock, another lips-on-stilts slipping clsoer to anorexia every birthday.

I never understood any real reason for Superman, Batman, Spiderman et al to have secret identities . Damon Wayans did a movie, about ten years ago, called "blankman" , that had a funny take on the whole secret identity thing.
