It said in the FAQ that the reason they changed the name was to provide "trademark protection". Why not just trademark the, IMHO much better sounding, Helix Code name?
I think that it would be much easier to get people that have never used Linux to use something that says Helix Code than something that says Ximian. I mean, I can relate to Helix Code - I've heard of Helix (Double Helix DNA stuff) and I've heard of Code (Programming, Cyrptographic, whatever), but Ximian?? I had to double check the webpage to make sure I spelled it right! Are they sure they made the right move on this? --
I think that it can be just a good if you stay with your normal peer group, but just find a couple of people that have the same interests as you. Just because someone is in a special program doesn't mean that you will be able to relate to them better than anyone else in your peer group.
Check out this website. It has a list of ~20 apps that will do what you want. While you're at it, check out the rest of the site, it has some pretty neat network utilities.
