Back then I was working at Egghead Software at the time so I had fairly unlimited access to evaluation software and lots of time to fuck around with it - so I know of what I speak :-). First there was standard Desqview, which ran on PC-AT (80286) class machines and better. Apple ][+'s were on the way out back then, but the ][e's were still in vogue. Of course, later on there was Desqview 386 which had better memory protection and virtualization. I actually got pretty good with it, to the point where I could run Desqview and Windows 3.1 together at the same time. But you needed plenty of RAM, and a very tweaked and stable QEMM-386 config (637KB low memory free w/ mouse, CD-ROM, Stacker, NAV and SpeedDisk, bitch).

Of course, then I switched to OS/2...

Personally, I'm so addicted to wireless headsets I would probably never use the phone without one, so a bad mic is a non-issue to me.

I am, however, wondering if anyone has found a good voice-dialling solution for the Treos (even if it's not free). That's the main thing holding me back from purchasing a 650 (well, once the GSM models are available).

FWIW (add salt accordingly) I've also heard from a moderately reliable inside source that the 700 will be out in around 6 months, possibly running PalmOS 6.

The moderation system favors highly polarized comments that appeal to specific groups, rather than intellectual analysis that encourages polite or at least respectful discussion. Intellegent discourse is still likely when the subject matter is extremely technical and in areas where political / religious differences are unlikely to inflame things. This is slightly off-topic because it won't take care of the particular solution being sought, but another interesting way to do RAID-1 is using the controllers from Arco Data Protection. The have some that are physically connected between your IDE or SATA controller and the two drives to be mirrored - they just seamlessly mimic a single IDE device. This makes it possible to RAID-1 any IDE or SATA drive under any operating system or device. I've used them in places like phone systems and voice mail systems that have no provisioning whatsoever for RAID. It can take a little bit of case tweaking, and you have to be sure the power supply can handle it, but it's an interesting solution in certain situations where nothing else can do the job.

  14. Promise is SHRAID, not RAID on Experiences w/ Software RAID 5 Under Linux? · · Score: 3, Informative

The Promise controllers are SHRAID, which is my own non-standard acronym for Software w/ Hardware-assist RAID or SHitty RAID in less polite company. And the "promise" of true redundancy is a charade (rim-shot, please). Basically, you have all of the disadvantages of software RAID - the need to manually configure bootability of both drives (assuming you're running RAID 1 or RAID 0+1 - if you're running RAID5 or JBOD it's an even bigger pain), plus the need to have specialized drivers on the OS, etc. These controllers (Promise, Highpoint, etc.) should be avoided like the plague for technical reasons alone.

Good, relatively inexpensive IDE and SATA RAID can be had with 3Ware Controllers. 2-drive models start around $140, and they support up to 12 drives on their more expensive controllers. The drives appear as a single physical device to the O/S, whether it's Windoze, Linux, BSD, DOS 3.1, etc.

  15. Don't screw around - hardware is better. on Experiences w/ Software RAID 5 Under Linux? · · Score: 5, Informative

Software raid is fine for simple configurations, but if you want to "do it right" - especially considering that you just dropped about a kilobuck on HDDs, go Hardware. A good, reasonably priced true hardware RAID controller that will fit the bill for you is the 3Ware Escalade 7506-8. It has 8 IDE ports, 1 for each drive - you don't want to run two RAID drives in master/slave mode off of a single IDE port; it will play hell with your I/O performance. It's true hardware raid, so you don't have to worry about big CPU overhead and being able to boot with a failed drive (a major disadvantage to software RAID if your boot partition is on a RAID volume, certain RAID-1 configurations excepted). You can buy them for under $450. provantage.com price is $423.48 (I have no relationship with them other than I've noticed that their prices tend to be decent).

  16. Yeah, but where is HD TiVo for the rest of us? on Engadget Interviews TiVo CEO · · Score: 2, Interesting

I love the comment about the excitement over HD TiVo, followed by the mention you can only get it with evil DirecTV. Even if DirecTV wasn't evil, there's no way in hell I can hit their satellites from my home (my patio directly abuts the neighboring building, and I have an extremely narrow view of the sky from there).

Right now I use a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000HD (HD DVR provided by my cable company) which has to be the most under-powered (CPU-wise) piece of consumer electronics ever produced. Press a button (wait 3 seconds), press another button. Keypress caching is intermittent and unpredictable, so you get into situations where your device becomes unresponsive for a minute because you accidentally held down a button. Directly entering a channel from the remote can take 5 attempts. It crashes regularly and takes 10 minutes to recover from a crash. It's a complete piece of shit that I pay $10/month to use because for all of the hassle, being able to record in HD is pretty sweet.

So TiVo needs to hurry up and release an HD-capable device for the rest of us so I can tell my cable company where they can stick this stupid box. Can you hear me TiVo? I want to give you money!!!
