  1. Wrinkle In Time: shot by both sides... on Slashback: Disputes, Clones, Audio · · Score: 3, Interesting

Actually Madeleine L'Engle's most important work, "A Wrinkle In Time" has been under fire both from those who are uncomfortable with anything that smacks of Christianity and from the more fanatic fringe of Christianity.

Really, whatever Christianity there is in that book is of a more Unitarian-Universalist bent...not only Jesus is cited as a fighter against The Shadow, but Gandhi and Buddha too. Kindly old ladies who befriend Margaret and are identified as witches doesn't help matters either. And various alien creatures for good measure.

It was one of my favorite books in childhood. Space travel, mysticism, a big gross brain running a planet...cool stuff for someone whose parents wanted to cram Nancy Drew down her throat.

That book would make a great movie...I'd love to see one of the big Anime houses like Ghibli or Gainax or the people who did Escaflowne tackle it. Actually it wouldn't be a bad bit of material for Brad Bird (director of "Iron Giant") at Pixar. Imagine an animated Ixchel! That would be great!

John Brunner for "Stand on Zanzibar" (cyberpunk in the 1950s - eat your heart out William Gibson)

Great book, wrong decade. "Stand On Zanzibar" was published in 1968, and is extremely influenced by what was going on in "Swingin' London" during the writing of the book. The events of the book are influenced by '60s-era history...Vietnam, Sukarno being deposed in Indonesia, unrest in various parts of Africa, etc. etc.

This was indeed somewhat prescient of current technology in the early 21st Century: a computer about a foot square with cooling systems that take up an entire room,(a logical final stage to the megahertz race and hotter and hotter CPUs!) narrowcast cable television, 24-hour news channels. He also got a direct hit on Glam Rock of the early 1970s and Punk Rock of the late 1970s.

However, "The Shockwave Rider," written in 1975, was the real Cyberpunk precursor, not "Stand On Zanzibar." A great article on just how prescient "The Shockwave Rider" was of the Internet is available here.

Brunner rocked. It's a shame he hasn't gotten the same reputation as Philip K. Dick as a must-read author.

Worst of all is the .la domain. I wanted a msgeek.la domain but couldn't afford the $100+/year that the owners of the CCTLD .la is selling domains for. I had to settle for msgeek-la-ca.us...I am still trying to figure out what to do with it. But I have it.

  23. Everything's crap now... on Has the Quality of Consumer Electronics Declined? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Unquestionably, everything is crap. My VCR took a dump recently...it was a semi-pro machine and was bought by a major cartoon studio in 1993. My husband and I wound up with it in 1996 or so. It had served us well up until a few weeks ago, when it ate a tape, belched, and wouldn't play anything anymore.

Trouble is, you can't really replace something like that anymore. Most VCRs are made in China, Malaysia, Indonesia or Korea, and are trash quality. I didn't have the heart to buy a piece of crap VCR and possibly risk the demise of more irreplaceable tapes.

I'm waiting for reasonable DVD recorders. Then I will get on the stick and dub all my tapes to DVD-R. (or +R if that shakes out as being the winner) Right now they are way too expensive.

BTW you can't guarantee getting something good if you buy Sony. Sony gets things made for them in China like everyone else does. And worst of all: they belong to the RIAA and MPAA.

I still can control quality on my computers by home-building, but I wonder how long that will last. Everything else...you roll the dice, you take the chance.
