Check out Vegas. It's a ProTools killer if ever I saw one. And there isn't anything like ACID anywhere, not for Mac, not for Linux, not even for Windows.
If I could run Sonic Foundry stuff on MacOS I would, but they are 100% Windows there. And all of their stuff is NT4/W2K savvy.
I am a Mac fan. I hate to say this, being a Mac fan, but the Foundry has kicked just about every Mac sound app's ass. Big time.
Actually there is another format which most word processors understand:.RTF. Rich Text Format.
Now that I am no longer working at a company that insists on.DOC ueber alles, I am instituting a policy here at Catseye Labs. Send me stuff in either of three formats, take your pick:.TXT,.HTML, or.RTF if you absolutely, positively need fonts and formatting.
Is RTF an open standard? I'm curious.
Live action "Tick" a disaster waiting to happen.

The good news on the Ben Edlund front is that the guy that played "Puddy" on Seinfeld is going to be starring in an Edlund-scripted, live-action, prime-time, "The Tick" on Fox! A clip from the pilot is floating around the web, if you are interested.
Oh BARF. "The Tick" was a tremendously cool, satirical animated series totally thrown away in a kidvid SatAM slot. There was just too much fanciful stuff in the comic book that could not be rendered any way OTHER than in animation. I believe Comedy Central is still showing episodes of this great series. Too good for Fox Kids, too good for Saban, maybe even too good for TV.
I have seen what a live-action "Tick" will look like. I saw the buried pilot for a live action "Dilbert" sitcom....believe me, it's as bad as you imagine and then some.
Ask yourself: do you really want to see a PUPPET Chairface Chippendale? Do you really want to see Arthur hanging from wires?
Ben Edlund is talented, but I doubt even he could save this horrible idea. If Fox Primetime wanted to do The Tick justice again, it could order new episodes of the animated series.
And yes, IBM/has/ changed alot. They're actually pretty damned cool!
I would have to agree with you. IBM is hardly the evil "Big Brother" figure that Apple threw a sledgehammer at in 1984. They have learnt a lot from their mistakes, and have put out solid product both on the hardware and software side.
SmartSuite Millenium is the most underrated suite out there, and I look forward to seeing it ported to Linux;
The IBM Thinkpad has consistently been the best damn laptop...solid as a rock. Can't afford a new one? Do like me and get a refurb.
My G3 is powered by a 350MHz Blue PPC chip. It kicks serious ass.
IBM currently makes the best HDs, period. SCSI? IDE? They smoke everyone.
It is a PLEASURE to deal directly with IBM. Bought a 25GB UDMA66 drive direct from them, paid about as much as I would have from local retailers even after factoring in the shipping, and I have the full Retail warranty as opposed to the catch-as-catch-can, repudiatable OEM warranty. If this drive bombs I'm covered.
We should get down on our knees and THANK IBM for being so supportive of Linux. They seem perfectly prepared to abide by both the letter and the spirit of Open Source.
No, this ain't your grandpappy's IBM. This isn't even your daddy's IBM. This doesn't even seem to be the IBM that killed OS/2 and made the Aptiva series of crapola desktops. If they continue the route they're on, they could be the company that pushes Linux over the top. They also make damn funny commercials, too.
One question: What happened to the Long Trail motherboard and IBM backing of LinuxPPC? Have they gotten any mobo manufacturer interest in producing that thing? I want one, and have since before Apple killed the Mac Clones! Anyone know? Anyone? Bueller?
Why not.show or.band? Many of the gTLDs that ICANN is suggesting like.store are more than three characters plus a dot long.
I know I'll get flamed for this, but I'm really hoping that the.xxx or.sex domains get started soon. This would make it easier for parents to shield little Johnnie from wank matter without having to resort to complex censorware which 9 times out of 10 has definite political agendas.
The.fan gTLD might also be helpful...no confusion anymore about whether a site is an official one or a fansite. No more pretenses for Fuji TV and Fox sending their landsharks out against fansites. It's ironchef.fan, not ironchef.com, no more confusion, call off yer goddamn lawyers.
This is long overdue. ICANN may yet redeem themselves.
And another sidenote - this is the most pirated program in the world, EVER. Adobe should be doing other things in the legalroom.
I think Adobe ought to do a very important thing with Photoshop 6: Lower the freakin' price, gah dammit! The reason why Photoshop is so widely bootlegged is because Photoshop costs so damn much.
GIMP is lovely but it doesn't run on either Windows or (especially important) Macintosh, so it's not going to take any bread out of Adobe's mouth. On the Windows platform there is also Paint Shop Pro, which is more rationally priced.
And don't say ANYTHING about Photoshop LE! Photoshop LE is crippled in very insidious ways to make it almost useless for anything other than running a scanner.
Adobe can continue to sit idly by while the 733t W@rEz KiDdIeZ bootleg their products and sell the illegal copies on eBay to unsuspecting folks, or do the right thing and LOWER PRICES. I assure you, Adobe, you will get an AVALANCHE of people who want to "get legal" if only the price was right.
Fearless Prediction: Caldera OpenLinux gets bought by IBM, changes name to IBM eLinux. After all, it was just announced that OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4 is going to be going out preloaded on some Thinkpads.
Of course, this isn't true of all movies -- remember the "hybrid" computers in Office Space?
The displays in "Office Space" were amusing...obviously generated on Macs but made to look as Windows-like as they could.
What was REALLY funny were the old DOS software boxes in everyone's cubicle. WordStar. DBaseII. WordPerfect for DOS. Really old versions of Autocad.
And of course, everything went up in smoke at the big climax.
"Office Space" is a true Geek Classic. It didn't last more than two weeks in the theatres but it's still one of the best Geek movies ever made. Oh yeah, don't miss the scene where they give a balky printer what-for.
Photoshop and Illustrator still run better on the MacOS than they do on Windows. Why? Because Adobe developed them on the MacOS. Even with the problems that exist in MacOS System 8.x and 9.0.x, Photoshop and Illustrator crash far less often on a Mac than on a Windozer.
Similarly, based on the general viewpoints of a group, one makes generalisations. Various media articles portray OS supporters in specific ways:
Amiga users - nostalgic, loyal supporters of a bygone OS
Mac users - die-hard graphics intensive bunch
No, I would say that by and large Mac users are people who want an OS that "just plain works" and they don't have to dink with endlessly. Unfortunately the MacOS hasn't been that way since System 7. And MacOS X will be even worse than 8 or 9 in this case.
linux users - geeky hackers who like networks and OS fundamentals
No, I think a lot of people have come to Linux because they are sick to death of dealing with Windows9x endlessly crashing.
windows supporters - "average newbie" types who bought what everyone else is buying.
No, I think a lot of the Windows supporters are in the "gamer with overclocked hot-rod PC" category. Unfortunately DOS and Windows9x still are the OSes with the reputation of running games well. Linux is going to eventually win those folks over, but it will take writing some decent video drivers to do it.
I defy anyone to find a person who is so clueless that they CAN'T install Caldera OpenLinux eDesktop on a VIRGIN drive. I can see how someone could fsck themselves royally with an attempt to repartition and install on a Windoze drive, but Lizard is incredibly slick and easy and installed right the first time. My "Samurai Penguin" is a very happy bird, indeed.
Only flaw that would make me recommend Corel over Caldera for Linux newbies...Caldera is still somewhat based on RedHat, and Corel is based on Debian. Debian's the saner distribution...RedHat tends to rush bleeding-edge stuff out before it's truly stable.
and "The Shockwave Rider" an absolute must read from John Brunner.
"Stand On Zanzibar" is another good one from John Brunner...it's a little more influenced by the times it was first published in (late 1960s) but it's a fun read. Brunner foretold CNN in that one, and the out-of-control consumerism of his 2010 is actually a dead-on evocation of the mid-'90s.
Brunner didn't have a clue about personal computers, though...his view of computers was strictly one of huge mainframes. Not everyone can be Jules Verne, though...
Oh, don't give me that Ayn Rand crap. Bill Gates is no Hank Rearden or John Galt. He bought DOS for the monetary equivalent of beads and trinkets and has built his empire off of Borg-ing the work of others.
Gotta give Gates props on one thing: he *did* code the first-ever Basic for the first-ever personal computer, the Altair. But that was back in 1976. What has Gates coded lately, huh? Name one thing.
4) Microsoft shall disclose to ISVs, IHVs, and OEMs in a Timely Manner, in whatever media Microsoft disseminates such information to its own personnel, all APIs
This is the real good news in this judgment. Not as good as opening up the source code, but it's a start.
I can still fantasize about Gates waking up with every version of Windows GPLed, though...
I have an elderly (365X) Thinkpad and I LOVE IT. It doesn't have the funky DSP, it doesn't get hot, it just works and works well. Built like a tank, and the guts are easy to get to with the flip-up keyboard.
The only thing I would change on "Little Blue" would be to have a swappable (you have to shut down first, not hot-swappable) hard drive instead of the bolted down drive. You can do that with a 360 and a few other models even older than the 365. It came with a 1GB HD and I have a 4.3 in there now. It would be kewl to be able to swap that 4.3GB drive (Windows95, don't ask) for that 1GB with Linux on it. As it is, that 1GB drive is just sitting in a static bag inside a padded mailer in a drawer in my desk.
1. They should switch the target individiual to a different anonymous account. 2. Suspend their current account 3. Legally go after the DoS'er 4. Once the DoS'er is taken care of, restore the customer.
Finally, someone posts a course of action that makes sense!!!! The victim is not further victimized, the DoSer is thwarted, everyone's happy!
One thing that nobody has asked: what religious preference is in question here? Is this a case of a Scientology critic being DoS-ed by Scientologist operatives in a "fair game" action? I'm curious about this.
The parent post here by Tech81 needs to be moderated up.
If you are installing Windows98SE, use the "Custom Install" option and UNCHECK WINDOWS SCRIPTING HOST and OUTLOOK EXPRESS. Also make sure you check your email using a Mac or a Linux box, because that stupid preview window in OE means you don't have to click on the attachment to get infected.

What I'm hoping for is that they also release the ICQ spec.

I would rather have seen DOJ force Microsoft to open up the source code of Windows than to merely break it up into an OS and an Apps company.
As it is, we will have two 400Lb. Gorillas rather than one 800Lb. Gorilla to deal with now. 400Lb. Gorillas are still pretty formidable.

Aqua *did* get in trouble with Mattel over "Barbie Girl." I am not sure what the upshot was but I do remember Mattel sic-ing their Landsharks on them.
Oh man...what I wouldn't give to be able to do this...
I mean, they ran it on a bloody 486!!! Imagine what this System 7 port would be like on a Celeron or something!
It prolly didn't work well...but ah, what might have been had Apple stuck with it!
