Not good. Why couldn't the machine connect to the network? What network is it connecting to? What should be done to fix it? Any software fix should be automated. If it's a physical thing, tell the user what to do.
10 years into this stuff and I still see people programming error message like "File Not Found". Some people will never get it.
Collecting sensitive information like addresses, birthdays, etc.... is a HUGE violation of individual liberties anyway. In almost all cases the collector should be told to F OFF!
think about using Linux??? You might want to go to a psychologist and see if they can figure out why you're sitting around rubbing two sticks together when the rest of us are lighting fires with a zippo.

If the collector of data did something like an MD5 hash to verify an identity, that's very difficult to do an inverse operation on.
