  1. Re:One does not... on Unions Urging Actors Not To Work On Hobbit Movie · · Score: 3, Informative

A big issue here in NZ is that it is illegal to force people into unions, and what the SAG and the other unions are trying to force,
is that everyone must have a union contract.
in NZ it must be an Opt-in collective, it cannot be compulsory. however that is exactly what SAG, FIA, et al are trying to force.

That's what unions do....they are trying to sneak through laws here in the USA to make union membership compulsory....they can't get people to join of their own free will to pay the dues that keep the fat cat union bosses and the contributions to the Demo party.

I have a couple of issues with the article (actually more, but this is for starters...)
    1. If the vast majority of increases is due to Chinese economic expansion, why are we targeting USA and EU for further cuts in emissions...ever heard of Pareto's law? Oh, yeah...the point of the Copenhagen meeting is to extract more wealth from the "rich" nations to give to the poor dictatorships...
    2. If the melting of all the polar ice is going to occur, and sea levels will rise that much, seems to me the "highly desirable" location of the British Isles will be underwater...or is it going to preferentially not rise there? I note the cover of Algore's new book which was photoshopped to add four hurricanes (one of which is rotating the wrong direction) and the polar ice cap all "melted" in spite of snow and ice cover in extreme northern Canada, and finally Cuba completely submerged...(can't believe Algore would do that to his commie buddies)

How stupid do they think we are?

Of all the comments I've seen on this topic, this is the ONLY one that even comes close to being scientifically valid. The reason that the process is more efficient from the coal standpoint is that you are raising the input temperature to the process by using solar to add heat. It's simple thermodynamics...oh yeah...thermodynamics isn't that simple, but it is sure as hell way over the empty heads of most environmentalists. If you want to argue science issues, go out and get some education so you have an understanding of the processes. Don't just spout the latest algore talking points. Sheeeesh.

  5. Global warming and spam.... on The Ecological Impact of Spam · · Score: 1

you first have to believe that energy usage from computers is significant enough to be a factor for global warming (I don't...), then you have to believe that by reducing spam you will reduce energy consumption. Given that most pcs run 24/7 because that's more efficient than turning it off and on, you are reduced to calculating the extra power consumed while screening and deleting spam. So you take a fraction of a small number and reduce it to a still smaller number...

Sorry, that doesn't pass the common sense test.

Just because you can calculate a number doesn't mean it is valid. Not all things that can be measured should be, and not all things that should be measured can be.

The price on the Home Depot generator is pretty good. After Ike came through, it took a week and a half to get power back in my neighborhood and I bought a generator within a couple of days. Cost me $700 for a 7500 watt unit that's a Chinese knockoff of a Honda generator. It ran well and I've since used it on the deer lease to power lights and other amenities. I've since bought a GenTran 60 Amp manual transfer switch and installed it myself...that was another $300 by the time it was all said and done, plus $50 for a power inlet so I don't have a male to male cable. I figure another $200 for connectors (that 25 foot cable from the generator to the power inlet was $120... and I'm now in the ballpark of the Home Depot genset.

I like the idea of the natural gas hookup. A 5 gallon can of gasoline would last through one night running the fridge and several fans.

At the end of the day, I probably nickel and dimed myself through the cost of the HD setup, but I couldn't take the up-front cost all at once.

Nowhere in the Constitution do the words "seperation (sic) of church and state" exist. From Wikipedia (a convenient, but by no means the only source)

"The phrase SEPARATION of church and state is generally traced to the letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to the Danbury Baptists, in which he referred to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution as creating a "wall of separation" between church and state.[3] The phrase was then quoted by the United States Supreme Court first in 1878,[4] and then in a series of cases starting in 1948.[5] This led to increased popular and political discussion of the concept."

The First Amendment guarantees freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. Nobody is forcing anyone to adopt any religion. Theocratic oligarchy???? Big words for someone who can't spell "separation"

ANG stands for Air National Guard...it's an aviation branch of the National Guard, although usually separate chain of command. You are correct...ANG, like NG is under the control of the State Governor (it's also known in some states as the "State Militia"). In some cases, the ANG/NG can be "Federalized" and put under the control of the DoD. That's what happens when a NG unit gets mobilized to Iraq or Afghanistan. You get the same "Reserve" credits and programs in the NG that you get in the regular service Reserves, and the added benefit of drilling close to home. OTOH, you give up the opportunities to drill elsewhere in the country unless you can work out a swap. The big flap in 2000 over GWB's Vietnam service was because he served in the Texas ANG. The claim was that he pulled strings to get into the ANG. Reality was that pilot billets were there for the asking. The billets that were in short supply were the clerk type billets where rich kids could hide out. GWB spent a year or two getting his wings, then drilled for a while. When he had an opportunity to work on a friend's political campaign, he requested and was granted an early release. That was not at all uncommon in those days. HTH
