  1. Complete, Utter, Comprehension! on Gzip on a PCI card · · Score: 0

(Christopher Kunz) / (sun/iX)

I have many obscure electronic artists I would like to find and download (and support, which previously has never been done at the same time before). And now, if I can get my fix on hour and a half long DJ sets for $23 (4 minute long songs for 90 minutes), I'll be one very happy camper.

I second that. Its very very easy for a switched network to be put in 'dummy mode' so they are effectively hubs. And once you do that, you can just log all traffic and figure out what it is later.

Thats a really basic course in identity theft and credit card theft the e-way.

You need to have firewalls, routers with strict access lists, servers with minimal ipchains setup.

If you're the one that gets blamed for this later, you'll probably lose your job.

oh, and also, document every time to try to get them to implement security (propose it in writing), and make sure they sign if they're against it. that way they can't play the blame game.

  18. Re:What's this to do with GSM? on Public Access 'Blackspots' · · Score: 2, Informative

Yes you are missing the point. Read the article.

"The heart of the problem is that when the GSM standard was being defined back in the late 80s, no one imagined that a hacker could set up his own wireless network to gain access to an operator's network and the user data therein. Therefore, GSM networks only authenticate the details held on the SIM card in a user's device before starting a session on the network. The user's device doesn't check the credentials of the network it is attempting to access.

This was fine before the advent of wireless LAN. But now for a minimal outlay anyone can own a wireless network.

Hackers can set up "rogue" hotspots that users will access in the belief they are on the genuine public wireless LAN network. Once users are on the fake network, it is easy for the hacker to access data held on the device via the 802.11 connection (see WLAN: The Four S's and this paper for more on the insecurity of wireless LAN). Hackers can then break into the SIM software on the user's device and get the codes held there. They can then use that information to fool the GSM authentication system and thus gain access to the network."
