One thing you should consider for your antispam filter is spamassassin I recently set it up on a couple of mailboxes via. procmail, but it also sports a site wide daemon.

After a little bit of tweaking I know use it to check for matching mails in the razor spam archive, against ordb.org and it's own check that sees if it matches usual spam criteria like claiming you can be removed from the list, claiming that the mail isn't spam or is in accordance with some US law etc - untill now it has cought every piece of spam I recieved (around 5-10 a day) and I've had no false positives yet.

Try it out - it's really great :)

Yes, amavis works fine in my experience, it does add a little extra load the the mail server (I guess any virus scanner would). I'm using it with qmail and Sophus Sweep, and have stopped lots of sircam mails since installing it.

As amavis really is only a link between your mail server and your virus scanning program, wether it will find a virus depends not on it, but on the anti-virus software.

Now if only the train would go a little slower, with those open wlans I could check my email a couple of times on my way to work :)

  13. Loadbalancing large websites on Google Doubles Server Farm · · Score: 5

In the recent months I've been trying to read everything I can find about loadbalancing large web sites, and google sure does make an interresting example.
My company is in the progress of moving from one big server to several smaller onces, to allow for greater scalability, there is just a limit to how much cpu + memory you can put in a single box. Our future site will proberly use linux virtual server, which seems quite nice, however I havn't seen that many testimonies/reviews from sites that use it. The company I work for creates online image manipulating services, and part of the process is rendering large high quality images - and the hard part seems to be shared storage of these images (scsi over tcp/ip seems very interresting), load balancing with static pages seems easy enough. Anyway google's way of using many small machines is an inspiration.

There has been many comments about the truth of this story, but I can tell you for sure that something - not exactly the same - but close happened in Denmark a couple of years ago.

Some people crafted a fake frontend to a night deposit box, placed it on the real one, together with a sign that told customers that the regular one was out of order and they should use the temporary one. It was apparently discovered after a couple of days and made the news.

The morale is: spend your money as fast as you earn them :o)

I find it quite weird that they operate a space station on a normal consumer point and click OS.

I would have though that with the resources needed to build an orbiting spacestation they'd have enough human resources to either build their own specialised OS, or customize some existing one (perhaps something like QNX).

One can only fear what happens when they upgrade to one of the new microsoft leases based licenses so when their link goes down and they can't contact microsofts license server the entire space station shuts down :)

Apt-get really is cool, but you can get a long way with rpmfind.net and tools like red-carpet.

    Hope it helps.
