Non Photo Realistic Quake
Nick G Superstar writes "From the site: 'NPRQuake attempts to capture the elements of different drawing techniques, and immerse the viewer in worlds drawn entirely in the prescribed style. If you have ever imagined running around inside a painting or a drawing, you are beginning to get the idea.' Warning: the site is slow." Update Remember this story
when we first ran it? Hemos doesn't. Obviously he was a bit pre-occupied this morning. Wonder why.
For a second there, I thought it was going to be listener-funded Quake. Whatever that means.
..but it has always crapped on my video card :(
if you want people to think you know what you are talking about, just put ".com" at the end of everything you say.com
Ahh.. good thing then that we have all seen it before last time it was posted.
Resistance is not futile - www.gnu.org
site is slow my ass. 600k/sec to my little box.
Last time I checked, slashdotting a site wouldn't help.

I remeber reading this article on Slashdot, which covered exactly the same site... I thought Slashdot was about stuff that matters, not about outdated stuff...

Seeesh, please include a filter for duplicate stories in the next /. revision. This is getting silly guys.
BTW, the site AND slashdot itself are slow.
Slashdot covered this story back on May 16th. It is goofy and makes you feel like you are playing in an Aha video.
or Van Gogh? Rembrandt? Max Fleischer?
so whos in for manga-quake?
Or heman/shera quake?
Or smurf quake?
'Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson...'
What is going on? Where is *any* evidence of 'news' in the item? Where does it say 'Yesterday, NPRQuake was announced' or 'Congratulations, NPRQuake has hit revolutionary milestone which will change the face of technology'? There isn't any evidence of this item even attempting to be news. And this is probably a good thing, because there isn't any respect in which it *is* news. For one thing, this site has even been featured on Slashdot before, and therefore by definition would have to have something major happen before it could be news on this site...
People all say 'That's why I've gone to K5', but the reason I haven't abandoned Slashdot whilst also reading K5 is that K5 actually isn't trying to do the same thing, and I don't see it as somewhere where I can get all my tech news. I don't necessarily agree with the calls for a user moderated queue, but part of the reason for that is that Slashdot used to be vaguely user moderated - if people hadn't bothered to submit an article, or had been rejected, after a few days of its publish, it never went up. This is no longer the case, and we frequently have people asking why something six months old was posted.
Come on! Surely one advantage of paid editors rather than user sustainability is that the editors can be expected to check out for a second the sources, preview links, etc. before posting, and do a simple archive search to determine if it actually is *news*...
Pencil-sketch Quake looked kinda cool, although I don't know how long I could play it. It looks like the overall brightness and contrast of the level is quite a bit higher than the normal, which stands to reason, given the desired effect.
Not being any kind of graphics wiz myself, I wonder how difficult it would be to implement, say, an actual full-color display? Something like watercolors or film grain or the like. Now that would be a touch surreal.
Karma: Excellent, but still won't get you laid.
it's really fun to see what you can do with the quake engine, especially this one :D

Back in my day we had to edit the URL, none of this newfangled clicking.
CowboyNeal for president!
"Hit any user to continue."
The use of an unmanned spy plane is pretty cool, and I wonder how long it would take to find out who actually sent it. Probably about 15 minutes of deductive reasoning...
Rated -1 for pointng out old news.

An operating system should be like a light switch... simple, effective, easy to use, and designed for everyone.
> Or smurf quake?
At first site i thought that might be scary, but then I thought of all those lovely weapons in quake 3, and how a blue target would stand out.
I agree where is smurf quake 3, as long as they kept the BFG it sounds fun.
Alex
That's an entirely acceptable distraction. :)

Ooooh! I can't wait for a 3D shooter in the style of Picasso's "Guernica", or Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase". How about an axe-only level done in the style of medieval paintings? Of course, concerned parents everywhere would scream bloody murder at Hieronymus Bosch Quake.
Freedom: "I won't!"
So it's a repeat but if you've read down this far, check out the surreal Pencil Whipped, a 3D shooter whose graphics were all done by a man with a pencil and a fevered mind.

You know... call me old fashioned, but what photo-realism? For the life of me I can't remember meeting anyone that looked like "Bones" before.
Man is born free; and everywhere he is in chains.
Remember the video for "Take On Me" by a-ha? Why not make a Quake level where you go in, beat that fruity guy up, steal the chick, and head out into the sunset?
Robotiq.com is heavily tested on animals
Wait, did they release a new version of quake and nobody told me?
Inquiring minds ... well ok, I'm just freaking nosey!

So you post it on the front page of Slashdot? Do you hate this guy for some reason?
last time.. the servers seem to be .. A tad Sketchy...
*rimshot*
this is a kewl idea... too bad it's so basic. i'd just wait for the next zelda... close enough idea and much better art direction.
help out.
The only thing missing is Cartoon Quake, where it would be rendered to look like a 2D cartoon, a bit like the latest Zelda for the GameCube.
Jumpstart the tartan drive.
Old news. Info about NPRQuake was posted to
Slashdot a couple of months ago.

Sketch Quake Renderer

Speaking as someone on the inside, I DO know why Hemos is pre-occupied... His wife just gave birth to their first child, a beautiful young daughter. Congrats, Hemos :) :)
has anyone released another type of NPR rendering that isn't available with the standard distribution of NPRQuake? I've had it for about 6 months, and have yet to find any settings other than blueprint, pbrush and sketch.
This tastes like granma! By george, you're right! it DOES taste like granma! We'll take a box of it!
Can't wait for someone to code an MC Escher-style renderer.
Why even bother with right angles or Euclidean space, for that matter?
There are 010 kinds of people. Those who understand octal, those who don't, and 06 other kinds of morons.
TomazQuake is all I use for NetQuake these days, try it once and you will never go back to regular GLQuake. Lots of eyecandy (water caustics, 32 bit texture support, loads half life maps, support for quake 2 textures, and MUCH MORE ;))

National Public Radio is making their own Quake distribution? Looks like they're not as culturally elite as we thought (or is that 3l33t?).
anyone that has time to post a message at 5-something on a Saturday morning obviously doesn't know what's up enough to check previous posts anyway. NERD!
Well, this article is pretty useless since we've all seen it before. Therefore I officially announce that I'm taking over this article and comments, in the name of the USA, and turning into a place to post your favorite guacamole recipes. So here's mine:
3ripe avocados
juice of 2 limes
1-2teaspoonssalt
1/8 tspground cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
2tablespoonschopped fresh cilantro
1tspminced garlic
Mash the avocados, with a fork or blender (I like it ultra smooth). Add the other ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate several hours for best flavor. Yum!
On the other hand, the site fell victim to the /.effect and ended up unaccessable the first time around. It's nice to have the chance...
...oh damn, it's slashdotted again.
Guess I'll be adding it to my bookmarks and waiting.
Yeah, so it's a repeat, but it's still a great technique.
Having played with it, and with writing custom renders, I can say that the SDK is really great. It's found here.
For more great NPR eye candy and programming stuff have a look at this good intro to toon rendering, this NPR site or indeed this or this demo of cell shading.
For anyone else who, like me, likes GFX programming for fum but is tired of working on an OGL engine that just ends up like everyone else's, this is a pretty cool feature to try and implement.
I've been running an even less photorealistic version of quake for years. ;-)

Looks best on a text console rather than an xterm, but you haven't lived untill you've played quake on a wyse60.
good to see shit happening in my home state a few miles from my home! props to the madtown crew.

You're gay.
Pencil whipped has been out for over 2+ years and has even been in museums - at the Mass MOCA and other places.
Check out the ORIGINAL: http://www.maxminn.com/chiselhead/pw.html
Now Pencil Whipped is not just a Quake pencil thing - but the real deal - an original game with original art.
You guys are obviously starting to recycle your stories. Do you think we don't notice?
We now return you to your regularly scheduled reposts.
Wow! Do we get skins that look like Cokie Roberts, or Click and Clack from "Car Talk?" Cool!
"Hardly used" will not fetch you a better price for your brain.
If a small Meteor is a Meteroid, does that mean that Hemos' new addition is a Hemmoroid?
But it wouldn't be the BFG, it'd be the BSG, for Big Smurfing Gun...
