I think somebody ought to have told me before, that this laser-dentistry is still in beta.

Previous attempts have resulted in unacceptably slow removal of tooth enamel, and have also damaged teeth. [...] heated up the tooth's softer tissue, causing significant pain to the patient.

Yes. I can definitely say, that the current laser dentistry is way better that with a drill, but is is still a very painful experience.

Now, if the new laser also eliminates the smell of burning teeth, it is perfect.

I wolud just love to sell my wifes car to get myself a sattelite of my own. I could even convince my buddies to sell their wifes/girlfriends cars to get that system built. :)

The big question is: How much higher is the price to get that thing up into an orbit where we constantly have access to it. I reccon, this might be a lot more expensive, but I would just love to have a communications-channel on my own...

    Dont wake me up, please...

OK, Youre reading slashdot. So you probably know linux a little bit. I began my professinal career as an operator for an IBM mainframe under VM/VSE a couple of years ago.

When there was a discussion about how to set up an intranet, i simply installed linux on an old box and showed my boss the results.

With just an average knowledg of linux, no other knowledge of unix and a strong will to learn everything i became member of the unix-team some weeks later.

    and this is the point:

show youre willing to learn. show youre able to learn quickly.

btw: im turning 34 next tuesday (presents welcome :-) an the whole story is not even five years ago.

so please dont moderate me to high, or my colleagues will read this story. :-)

there are still a couple of hardware-crypto-boosters out there. when using ssl-secured web-transactions, the big deal is calculationg the session key through asymmetric encrytion. the session itself is encrypted with this key then (symmetric encryption). without hardware-booster a typical webserver (eg. sun e250) manages to do around 30-40 sessions per second. the hardware boxes make it do 300 transactions / second / box (yes, you can use several boxes in one server). check out http://www.ncipher.com or http://www.rainbow.com or reply to olaf@thormaehlen.net

this is so(!) right. i work in a team administrating a mainframe, an as/400 and several unix-boxes (oh, and some nt-servers. i always forget *that*). when other employees enter the office they usually see some young people standing around an talking some hich-techie stuff. it is that rare (lucky me) times when something *really* goes wrong that they notice that my job is not just standing-around-drinking-coffee.
it took me some time to believe that they have a picutre of my job that wrong. and some more time to make at least the PHBs of other departments understand what im doing and that unlocking network accounts on monday ("that password did work on friday") is not what im coming to work for.
