  1. CEOs? That's crazy! on Google Cancels AI Ethics Board In Response To Outcry (vox.com) · · Score: 3, Interesting

I work in the industry AND have strong positive moral ethics. They didn't ask me to serve on the board. Not sure why they picked a bunch of CEOs ... that's a group of people that are more likely to be sociopaths than anybody!

  2. "These far outpaced compensation (18%)" on What Student Developers Want in a Job (techrepublic.com) · · Score: 1

  3. Re:Of course it doesn't matter on Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Says Follower Count is Meaningless · · Score: 1

Also, the number of followers that like what you have to say (@FredRogers), and the number of followers who call you an idiot for anything you say (@POTUS)

  4. Telephone Companies managed to solve this problem on FCC Leaders Say We Need a 'National Mission' To Fix Rural Broadband (cnet.com) · · Score: 1

Rural areas are serviced by telephones. Perhaps role out broadband the same way: well regulated monopolies, then break them up when people complain that they're monopolies.

  5. Re:70 years beyond the death of the artist on President Trump Signs Music Modernization Act Into Law (billboard.com) · · Score: 1

So, if a 20 year old artist dies shortly after copyrighting work, the music is public domain 70 years later. If that artist lives to 90, that means the music is public domain 140 years later.

  6. traffic across state borders? on Entire Broadband Industry Sues California To Stop Net Neutrality Law (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1
"[I]t is impossible or impracticable for an Internet service provider ("ISP") offering BIAS to distinguish traffic that moves only within California from traffic that crosses state borders," the lobby groups' complaint said.

Couldn't they just reconfigure the routers to isolate segments from state to state? That way you know when traffic is coming into or going out of your state. Perhaps that's the "impracticable" part.

  7. I'll let you all know how well Titletown Tech responds to my request for help keeping my "forward facing servers fast and clean." I also let them know their 'contact' button doesn't work.

  8. Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator on FBI Mysteriously Closes New Mexico Observatory (popularmechanics.com) · · Score: 1

They've been there so long because there are so many rabbit holes around the observatory.

  9. Re:Boycott Twitter Until Trump is Off It on Inside Twitter's Long, Slow Struggle To Police Bad Actors (wsj.com) · · Score: 2

I find it cathartic to use Twitter to yell at Trump and tell him what a douche bag he is. I know he never reads it ... because it involves reading ... but it's fun anyway.

  10. Re:They shouldn't be policing anyone on Inside Twitter's Long, Slow Struggle To Police Bad Actors (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

The point of policing is to identify people who harass and abuse, and/or post false or misleading information (lies and propaganda). Some people are too dumb to know when they are being manipulated ... and some people are so good at manipulating, that even smart people get conned.

  11. To be fair ... on Inside Twitter's Long, Slow Struggle To Police Bad Actors (wsj.com) · · Score: 1, Informative

If twitter banned Alex Jones for his nut job conspiracy theories and lies, they'd also have to ban @realDonaldTrump for his abuse, lies, and conspiracy theories. So my conspiracy theory is that Alex still has access because otherwise Trump wouldn't.

  12. And this affects California how? on White House Proposal Rolls Back Fuel Economy Standards, No Exception For California (npr.org) · · Score: 1

I don't see how this affects California. They make their own rules and standards. I guess it only affects them if car makers don't want to sell cars in California.

  13. Which is why we can't have nice things

  14. I don't understand. You say " IBM grants free access to its entire patent portfolio", but Amazon, Facebook, and Alphabet are paying money for something according to the article. Which is it?

  15. I'm thinking you don't understand economics, either. The middle class spending their money doesn't make them wealthier. Owning things doesn't improve your standard-of-living, unless you base the quality of your life on how many material things you own. It may grow low paying retail jobs, but not wealth, except for the 1% of course.

  16. " and I showed him some more analytical kinds of things to demonstrate why." And I'm sure Donald was able to comprehend none of what Mr. Cook tried to explain to him.

  17. What if we're moving fast... on One of the Milky Way's Fastest Stars Is an Invader From Another Galaxy (sciencemag.org) · · Score: 0

  18. What it were a different criteria? on One Of LLVM's Top Contributors Quits Development Over Code of Conduct, Outreach Program (phoronix.com) · · Score: 1

Would he have left if it were another organization like Outreachy but it only gave scholarships to students of low income households? Why do people of privilege get so upset when someone tries to help people who are usually marginalized or not given (or can't find) opportunities? You can't help the world by making everything equal when in reality it still won't be equal.

  19. You don't think that non-progressives (aka conservatives) care about sexism/racism/homophobia/etc.? I wouldn't label all conservatives as bigots.

  20. DirecTV Now vs. Youtube TV vs. Set TV? on Netflix, Amazon, and Major Studios Try To Shut Down $20-Per-Month TV Service (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

  21. What happens if they do the opposite? on Netflix Pulls Out of Cannes Following Rule Change (variety.com) · · Score: 1

"a law in [France] requires movies to not appear in home platforms for 36 months after their theatrical release." What if they release on home platforms first and then decide to release it in the theater? Do they have to wait 3 years before releasing it in the theater? Or can they never show it in a theater in France if it's on a home platform first?

  22. Multiple screens on Slashdot Asks: Should Android OEMs Adopt the iPhone's Notch? · · Score: 1

If the bits of display on either side of the notch were treated as two additional screens, the primary display would be backwards compatible. If Android supported additional screens, you could also have side-by-side full screens for, say, the facing pages of a book, or front and rear camera views, or that Nintento dual screen game thing that came out a few years ago.

  23. Did the internet just fork? on HTML5 DRM Standard Is a Go (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 2

It seems that every time big business gets involved in something open on the internet, that project forks to keep a branch open. With the withdrawal of the EFF from W3C, did standards just fork? Will there now be two internet standards committees in the future? One for big business, one for everyone else?
