Not all of us play your piece of shit "hit of the month" games, and even some of those can't be run on Linux in any reasonable way (Half-Life 2, Far Cry). I'm on linux and I can never play:
Falcon 4.0
Lock On: Modern Air Combat
Il-2 Sturmovik
Steel Beasts
Quality games you've probably never heard of. Yes, if you're a typical "omg frags, xp, +3 mace!" gamer then yes, you can get by with linux (after dealing with emulation/translation troubles). But for the finer games, Linux just doesn't cut it at all.
Later in his life, Einstein was rather divided over violent and non-violent resistance. For example, in a 1941 letter to a pacifist he said:
If all the young people in America were to act as you intend to act, the country would be defenseless and easily delivered into slavery.
The issue became progressively more cloudy as Einstein aged. A Guardian article details Einstein's conversations with a Japanese pen-pal after World War II:
I didn't write that I was an absolute pacifist but that I have always been a convinced pacifist. That means there are circumstances in which in my opinion it is necessary to use force.
Einstein likely changed his views because of the plight of the Jews in Nazi-ruled Germany and elsewhere. Though he was not a practicing Jew, he still felt connected to the Semite people and served the Technion Institute in Israel. By the circumstances of his time, Einstein accepted war as a necessity to combat extraordinary evils.
It sounds like neither of you (bani and PsychicX) have any idea of what you're talking about. Both of you took a 30 second look at the Q3 code and gave different baseless statements shortly after. PsychicX is just a drooling Carmack fanboy, while you're (bani) just an elitist contrarian. It's a shame we can't get any informed opinions of the code, for the time being.
Hasn't this dumb shit been on the drawing board for like, 20 fucking years? Last I heard they were planning on rolling it out in Orlando, which of course never happened. Is this any closer to fruition now?
MAKS is a Russian airshow, not a defense program. It ends this sunday. For the third year in a row (I think), it features U.S. military aircraft as well.
The Paris, Farnborough and MAKS international airshows are premier events (the Paris and Farnborough international airshows are held on alternating years) for aerospace enthusiasts. It's fascinating to see such a blend of mega-corporations, politics and military might intertwined at extravagant affairs. Last year at Farnborough, Boeing and Airbus officials were at each other's necks.
I did not think "Centrino" when I heard "AJAX." It's not like giving a single name to multiple technologies is rare, see; object oriented programming, linux, fuel cell, sensor fusion, quiet supersonic platform (QSP), etc. I don't see why you think AJAX and Centrino are so exceptional.
Yep, it's coming out 2007 May 05. As you know, we Slashdotters are privy to all manner of corporate secrets. Also, we can predict the future. I am sorry that you have not yet discovered these abilities. It is likely that your 800k uid inhibits them somewhat.
With all these "U.S. [education|technology|economy|blah] falling behind" stories, you'd think the US should be a third world country in 5 years. Really, is everything all that bad here in the US? Or are people just making mountains out of molehills?
Forgive me if I do not think a nation's progress stands on broadband internet access, or any other single marker.
Students use used books as much as possible. Publishers already beat down the used book industry with their nefarious "new" editions. Oddly, my astronomy teacher in high school was the first to tell me of this (we used college astronomy textbooks).
I was a bit taken aback by Carmack's opposition to procedural textures. No, they can't do everything but they can be real timesavers when you need to add some overall realistic looking details. Things like dirt, "roughness" and stains can be done effectively using Brownian noise and the like, and you've got the infinite resolution, low-memory features of procedurally generated data. It's efficient and looks good, especially when I used it to create realistic terrain.
Of course procedural textures can never replace hand-painted detail, but layering on some infinite-resolution noise-detail onto a finite sized bitmap texture really brings materials to life.
If anyone wants a decent (and cheap) textbook, check out Fundamentials of Astrodynamics. The math in it is remarkably accessible, and most of it does not require derivative calculus. It's a bit dated by now, but still the book of choice at most universities for undergraduate astrodynamics.
(The book was written by U.S. Air Force Academy professors, and has an almost amusing discourse on ballistic missile trajectories as well.)

This is one of the funniest things I have read on slashdot. Good find.
If an American-made Boeing jet is about to go outside the envelope, a cockpit alarm sounds, but the stick still responds.
But every Boeing airliner uses a yoke, not a stick. And Boeing F/A-18E/F's have FLCS soft g-limits as well.

I've heard Intel won't even look at you if your GPA is lower than 3.8. There are a lot of bright kids who want to work there.
Hey, my job relies on my PHP knowledge, and even I agree with your statement. :)
too much TeX ;)
ellipsis with only two full stops
lol errors

Hey, BeOS Personal Edition is what led me to linux years ago.

Still no cure for cancer.
Like, fifteen.

Ahahahaha.

And I thought only trolls were funny.
