I don't know, but this just shows how advanced Linux has become.. I mean every OS has bugs, but how often can that be said the other way around?

  2. Blurry images. on Rugby Ball Meets Web-Cam · · Score: 4, Funny
So far, the camera is only able to produce a faint blurry black-and-white image.

Gee. I cant wait until it can produce hi-rez full color faint blurry images.. What a scientific advance!

I've always heard you're statistically safer in an airplane 30,000 feet above the ground than you are in a car 30,000 feet above the ground..

Will these be hydrogen powered? The new Honda Zeppelin?

  5. Re:Transfer Away ... on What to do when your registrar (NSI) ignores you? · · Score: 2

I transfered all of my domains away from NSI last year. A few weeks ago I got a FINAL NOTICE bill for a domain I am using for mail. First I tried to call them - I gave up after 25 minutes on hold and decided to jump through their online hoops instead. I finally got a message to them, the gist of which was:- THIS DOMAIN IS NO LONGER REGISTERED WITH NSI - PLEASE CORRECT AND CONFIRM.

Yesterday I finally got a response from them stating that they had recieved my message that I had paid, but their records said I didn't. I NEVER SAID I HAD PAID. I don't NEED to pay NSI for a domain that is not registered through them. I wrote back attaching the Whois record for clarification.. See, not NSI registered domain. Mm'K?

I figure I'll get another mail from them in the new year saying that my account is seriously past due, at which point I can once again try to explain to them that THERE IS NO ACCOUNT.
Why the hell do they hire people that CAN NOT READ? All this does is clog up their system with unnecessary noise..

    Bah.

..It's true, they don't make kindling the way they used to. If you don't believe me, try overclocking a K62 to 1.6Ghz - That's MUCH better kindling than an Athlon XP..

  7. Webplayer.. on Homemade Digital Picture Frames? · · Score: 2

I'm suprised no one has mentioned the webplayer yet.. I picked up a couple in a co-op buy last winter and just now got around to hacking it (hows that for procrastination?) - You can pick them up at ubid or ebay for around $100 - There's a great webplayer hacking forum here and it's easy to hook up to a USB ethernet connection..

  8. Long work days.. on 80 Gig MP3 Player · · Score: 2

I guess it depends on what compression, but at the rule-of-thumb compression of 1 meg/minute, 30 gig is 30,720 minutes of music, or 21+ contiguous days (64 days of 8 hours).

Maybe your work days are REALLY long?

Hey if you want to hear the exact same music day after day, you can save a lot of money by not buying any CD's - An FM radio is all you need.

Frankly I never listen to any of my music collection anyways - AM Talk radio is where its at.. Of course to archive all that talk radio I'm going to need a lot more than 80 gigs..

  9. Oh come on! on Filing a Domain Name Dispute? · · Score: 3, Funny

This whole story has got to be extremely clever spam from that porn-shop.. You let the domain lapse, its gone, and now the new owner has hordes of horny geeks checking it out. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but hey this is too much.

  10. Why? on 80 Gig MP3 Player · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why is it so hard to believe that someone would want 80 gigs of music storage? Is it difficult to believe that someone would have several hundred CD's collected over the years and want to archive them at a decent quality in a jukebox? I know I've run out of space on my 40 gig drive and am going to adding another just for music..

  11. But you don't need a plugin.. on EFF To Defend Music Swapping Service MusicCity · · Score: 3, Funny

'Illegal' files can be got via HTTP or FTP.. You can find lists of them on webpages, most likely created with MS front page and viewed on Internet Explorer.. I think its time we really got tough on piracy and threw the whole Redmond lot in jail!

  12. No doubt! on Interview With Linus · · Score: 5, Funny

... They're very good at marketing.

I just realized how true this is - My girlfriends mother was visiting this weekend, she has no computer, and indeed has never actually used a computer. She was wondering if Mandrake was Windows XP since she HAD heard of that..

  13. Re:Douglas Adams - literature on Writers Who Will Stand the Test of Time? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I noticed a strange thing at my local used book store - Right after Douglas Adams died his books were moved from the 'Science Fiction/Fantasy' section to the 'literature' section.

I'm wondering what their thought process was on this one? 'Science Fiction/Fantasy' is not 'serious' enough? He's dead now, so his writing is classic literature? ..wierd.

  14. Are you kidding? on WipOut Contest · · Score: 2

.. You can assume anything you want. I can assume that the moon is made of cheese if that fills my heart with happiness. Were you planning on writing an essay on the evils of IP law and then suing them for reproducing it?

I think the word assume is used in this context to let you know exactly what the terms of submitting an essay are..

  15. I don't get it.. on WipOut Contest · · Score: 5, Funny

.. So how do I ensure that I am getting proper royalties from this essay? Has wipout got some sort of advanced DRM that will insure that my ip remains the property of wipo and I recieve .002 cent's per dollar sale? What about making sure that I recieve multiple royalties based on delivery media? I'm gonna have to run this by the RIAA and make sure it's legit, then I'll roam the web and 'sample' material from various sites and use it for my 'unique' personal essay.

This just looks like some of the wireless keyboards I've used with integrated track ball and buttons on both sides.. Works fairly well for basic mouse manipulation, but I can imagine doing anything fast or precise with that controller- There's something strange about haveing your hands that far apart.. Is this just a slow plodding point-and-click game?

  21. Ban the fan! on A Look At The World of Heatsinks · · Score: 3, Funny

I would have liked to see more focus on using the heatsinks without fans. I wish we could get away from moving the air past the heatsink with a big-ass whirring fan.. Between the fans and drives in my systems I can barely hear the phone ring. I've started putting foam and dynamat in my boxes to quiet them down, but I'm thinking it would be cheaper and simpler to just duck-tape the foam to my ears..

  22. Springboard? on Treo, Combination Cellphone and PDA · · Score: 3, Informative

no matter how 'realistic' graphics and AI get, if you're dealing with a flat screen and a mouse/keyboard it's not much of a 'simulation'..
