When the current economy is pretty much the employer's market, the big guys can always impose more restrictions and come up with just about any logics behind it, to squeeze out every ounce of 'productivity' and to cut cost.
A good point of the distro is the inclusion of a WINE release. While I could only run correctly simple applications like notepad.exe and the Windows calculator, it is a nice addition. All the.exe programs are marked with the WINE icon and if you doubleclick them, WINE will try to load them.
..Uh, but there are far better native apps available for free.. Why would you ever want to run windows notepad or calculator? I understand the eventual goal of WINE to run all those exe's seamlessly, but why is WINE a nice addition in this distribution if it just runs simple programs that already have better native versions?
Hey now! I don't mind helping out poor artists like Bryan Adams* with my Data CD purchases, but whats to keep some malicious hacker from playing their MP3.com downloads on their PC's, thereby cheating the industry out of their cut? Where's the tax on Hard-drives?
*poor as in 'low quality' not poor as in 'without cash'.
Hell if the goal is to make computers as simple as TV (thats what I got from this article) than moving toward the ideal MPAA/RIAA machine would be perfect. Instead of this complicated machine with many options and code you could actually look at, we could have 'the computer' with a big dial/knob on the front. switch the knob to go between 1)the game channel 2) the email channel 3)etc.. Oh and every 'channel' could have a big flashing "BUY STUFF" button for 'interactivity' -Its convergence in action!
A computer is more complicated than a TV because YOU CAN DO MORE WITH IT.
It was probably heavy metal music. yep. If we're going to pin it on one thing, lets pin it on men wearing makeup.. Whatever we do, lets not acknowledge the fact that some people are just f*cked and with access to enough firepower are going to be dangerous.
Shouldn't this be under the category "Its funny, laugh"?
But many who received Jones' e-mail are not California residents. Some aren't even U.S. citizens. Evidently, the address harvester used by Jones' vendor assumed that all e-mail addresses containing ".ca," a suffix that identifies a Canadian domain, belong to California residents.
Well, clearly if he could get the much coveted Canadian vote he'd win by a landslide..I bet the Canadians aren't voting for any other Californian Politicians. I don't know why no one has ever tried this before. How innovative!
Mr. Tilden recalled a woman who fled their first date after being approached on his couch by a television remote control to which he had grafted a snakelike robotic tail. "I designed it to move when someone sat down because I kept losing the remote in the cushions," he said.
Note to self: hide semi-threatening robotic insecte when trying to impress opposite sex.
Yeah, so we all know it insecure.. That's a given, however I have come up with a super secure patch. Whenever I step away from the machine I unplug the ethernet cable. When I go away for vacation I usually pull the plug AND apply a little epoxy to the ethernet jack for extra security.
So if anyone wants to see my website, please send me some email first.. be prepared for a little delay, that epoxy is tough to dig out of that little hole.
Pointless research - the human species will have all transcended their current forms to become 4 dimensional toasters with great hair.
Yeah right.. Thats what they all say. You'll have to excuse me If I don't put too much faith in your predictions for the far future. I'm still trying to live with the dissapointment of reaching the year 2002 and not having a shiny foil suit, jet-pack, or flying car.
Yes, but if they get this working can you imagine the great advantage it would give us? Why just the time saved alone would be astounding. Have you ever tried to put a pair of glasses or contact lenses on a tadpole or full grown frog? Its not easy.
Extreme Programming? Really? I always thought it had something to do with making your machine run as fast as an XT machine, and starting to look a bit more like Xwindows, without the flexibility. I didn't know that the 'P' stood for 'programming'.. Well I guess we'll just have to take their word for it, since you can't actually look at the code..
Hmm.. I guess I better start putting disclaimers and lame emoticons all over my posts to make sure no one takes them to seriously.;):-0 +8()
..Geez.. 2.0? Thats no good.. I mean look at windows for instance - Its way past 3.0, past 98.0.. I think its even past version 2000 now! How is linux ever going to competitive with such small version numbers?
You people always getting worked up over little things like 'military waste dumps' and 'poisoned drinking water' - What don't kill you a slow painful death can only make you stronger..
Personaly though I don't dig Monsanto, I prefer geneto fudes
Even if this doesn't pan out to be as good as it sounds, I love to see competition in this area. I would really like to have a fanless computer for my desktop, and a laptop that can last for more than a day on a full charge AND run some high-falutin' graphics & games..
A cheery suicide story for Xmess - Thanx slashdot!.. I'll be hanging out at the mall jabbing sharp products in my eyes if anyone wants to get ahold of me..
Why wouldn't you want a keyboard attached to the thing so you could enter text at a decent speed and fold shut to protect the screen? I mean, I can see the appeal of working with a tablet pc, but I thought the best design for this would be something like the Vadem Clio, which has a keyboard that folds behind the screen - Now if I only I could find a real machine in this configuration!
This always comes up in discussons about huge hard-drives. I've got a couple of hundred gigs on my desktop, and I'm currently going through and trying to clean the thing up to make some free space. Granted there is a lot of junk there, but I actually need the space for working with video files - I do graphic design and video editing and I can tell you that 100gb sounds great, but can fill up fairly fast when your working with uncompressed files.
The only problem I've had with PayPal was a looong delay in processing a bunch of payments for a group buy of webplayers. A lot of people in the co-op were highly irritated with the delay. They wanted the main buyer that we were sending our money to to prove his identity.. If anything this reassured me. I've also used it without a hitch to buy a few things off ebay.
I think the main thing to keep in mind is that PayPal is not a bank, and not FDIC insured.. I'd use it as a method to exchange money online, but not as a cash storage facility.

Boy.. Tell me about it.

Is there really a difference anymore between data and telecommunications? How can the definition of the pipe be so important?

If you don't like the DVD, you can recreate your own deadly 'Discs of Tron' game in real life!

I dunno - I feel a lot less creative now that I use a computer all the time.. of course that could have something to do with the booze.

I'm not a lawyer (IANAL)(AFAIK), but I'm counting on it .
This UCITA thing is gonna make me rich!
