The big problem with spreadsheets is that they are increasingly being used to implement software, but that the architecture they provide (a matrix of expressions) makes it almost impossible to validate the code.
... which is something which companies like Pwc and KPMG started, with their quick and dirty approach to consulting, in order to save time and margin! It's the same with the PPT slides, which now have took the place of all reports but with way less informative content.
Looks like they could have found a new line of business: give professional advice how to solve the problems generated by their professional advice, whoops... this is the old consulting business model!
Wasn't BeOS supposed to give PalmOS the boost to became the next big thig in handhelds? Since Palm bought it I haven't heard any news, besides the occasional "Cobalt is coming". Anybody has news?
You can find a XUL-Plugin for mozilla here [mozdev.org]. I haven't tried it with NS7 jet, but it works nice with mozilla.
It should work with NS too, generally all Mozilla add-ons work in NS (and viceversa) if they are based on the same release (in this case NS7 "RC1" and Mozilla RC2).
MathML [w3.org] is part of the preview release, although Netscape seems pretty quiet about it. It wasn't mentioned in the PC World article either. I tried it out on the Mozilla MathML torture test [mozilla.org] and it works fine. The only negative is that you need to separately load some math fonts [mozilla.org]... at least on unix.
It's the same on win32, at least with Mozilla RC2 don't know about NS7 but I doubt it's different. What would be cool is that NS installed, by default or with user action, the needed fonts. That'd be a killer for universities people.
I want the ability to link up to my bank, credit card companies, morgage companies, retirement fund, etc. and download the latest data like I can with Quicken.
Has anybody tried to run Quicken with WINE? How does it work?
Adding Quicken support to CrossOver Office could make it more interessant since there's no equivalent in Linux. Anybody from CodeWeavers here?
.... this is the technology, but well, where is the service provider? And how much they are going to charge? Honestly, if this really gives you satelite+cable TV, 3 phone lines and 10BaseT, I'm willing to pay up to $300 a month for it.
In some areas of Italy there's Fastweb which offers for 75 EUR (~66 USD) a month Cable TV, local and national phone calls and Internet connection. Their mother company, eBiscom, has wired Milan and some other big italian cities with some very high speed fibers. I live in an area without coverage but from some friends who have it I've heard it's pretty good. Here you can find some informations in english, enjoy!
That said, I'd settle for just having the colour-coded "new mail" icon with the ability to hover over it and see the sender/title. At the office, where we use Outlook/Exchange Server, one of our guys tried to write a tool that hooked into Outlook and did that a while back. Unfortunately, he found insurmountable problems with the way Outlook's automation and new mail reporting features work. Too bad, as the rest of us were looking forward to him finishing it!
Hacking Mozilla should be fairly easier and that feature would be handy... why don't you tell him to start working on that feature for Mozilla?;)
The Google toolbar is one of the biggest reasons I use IE. (Well, that and the fact that page developers, including myself, follow the rule of thumb "Design so that it looks good in IE and works in Netscape.") But anyway, I digress. If you're using IE, check out toolbar.google.com [google.com] and download it.
There an implementation of the Googlebar for Mozilla too and it works nicely, it's not as cool as the original one but it's improving quickly. You can find it here: http://googlebar.mozdev.org
The biggest problem is that flash wants to be a general system for making all things online That's exact the idea of HTML. Only HTML add the keywords indexeable, shareable and ease If macromedia can add those to flash, then perhaps we'll be getting somewhere.
I bet Google will come out with a "show as HTML" options for Flash sites.
You mean something like the combination SVG [w3.org] and ECMAScript (JavaScript) [w3.org].
Well, it already exists, and it's pretty nifty too...
Now if somebody just _used_ the stuff too.
Looks like SVG support will be enabled by default in Mozilla after they go 1.0, so there would be a somehow common client where to show the SVG stuff. What I fear is that nobody will turn to SVG since everybody will use IE in his MS box.
SEN TO CHIHIRO NO KAMIKAKUSHI (Spirited Away) won, a few weeks ago, the Golden Berlin Bear (which is the first prize) at the Berlin International Film Festival. You can check the announcement here
It's a very important fact since it's the first time that an animated movie which, moreover, happens to be a japanes animated movie won such an important prize. I don't know how many of you US based folks (I'm italian and I live in Italy, at the moment) heard of this movie festival but it's a pretty important festival here in Europe and the movies which get the prizes are usually considered to be high quality movies. I hope this will help animated movies to exit from the ghetto where they are (childish movies) and start being considered only movies; moreover I hope the prize will help the anime to be considered normal movies and not porn or low quality movies.
Ok, enough for the rant now,
Andrea
PS some more rant;) I submitted the Berlin Prize story some weeks ago but it didn't make it to the main page, don't know why though. Sic transit gloria Slashdoti.
...this thing is totally Linux/Mozilla based. And the best part -- check out the "developers" pdf [nokia.com], the want people to hack it!
I've heard that Mozilla will be dropped soon in favor of Konqueror. This is a bad news, at least for me being a fan of Mozilla and GNOME but I guess is the evidence of the higher level of maturity reached by Konqueror and the KDE.
Well, THAT brings back memories...
You've got two options:
1. I found an online version of it here [cf.ac.uk].
2. If you really want to recapture the "old school" experience, you can get the original troff sources here [std.com] - but then you have to go to Finland [funet.fi] to find the "recipes" macro package that you need to process them successfully.
I wonder why the abobe post has not been modded up yet!
HP has contributed two entire Debian ports (PA-RISC and IA-64) done with HP engineering staff, and supports a number of Debian maintainers to work on company hours.
Yep, I did know HP supported Linux but what I was wondering about was wheter it was directly contributing to Mozilla and OpenOffice.
Something that would help Thunderbird adoption a lot is if the big CRM vendor (such as SalesForce and Netsuite) integrates their system with it.
People at http://www.asmallworld.net/ are doing this with Skype and a small plugin. It's pretty nice.
No lawyer had the guts to represent them? Or were they quietly discouraged to be represented?

Sorry for the somehow trivial question but: when can we expect a 7.3 final release?
Andrea
Optimoz: add gestures to Mozilla.
Enigmail: add PGP/GPG support in Mozilla Mail.
Googlebar: the cool Googlebar for Mozilla too.
And if you want more just look in MozDev and you'll find something interesting.

Duh! If you click on that Bugzilla link it yelds this message:
Andrea
There's Enigmail a plugin that allows users to access the authentication and encryption features provided by GPG and PGP.
For this one you can vote or work on this bug.

Something like that is planned for Mozilla, check this this post by Seth Spitzer on netscape.public.mozilla.mail-news.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

I was wondering if is it possible to make something similar under Windows (ME).
Anyone?
