I don't know, with good equipment, it wasn't so bad. We kept two numbers. One was for the V.90 bank, one was for the k56flex bank. While the main bank was more reliable for those in the boonies, and went to V.90 fairly well, the k56flex never really failed us, and generally had fantastic speed and reliability for those with semi-modern lines.

Because PostgreSQL doesn't have as large of a community, can be a pain in the ass to administer, and doesn't have the same cross platform toolset as MySQL has accumulated over the years. Technically, PostgreSQL is superior, but in practice, most won't care or know the difference.

I've been a Mac user for a long time, and I've experienced very little lock in. Sure, many of the Apple apps are in common use because they're well designed -- I chose the operating system, only makes sense that the apps work like it. ;) Regardless, I find a lot of third party apps to work quite well, and Microsoft Office is a bit of a dog.

I will champion the free software as much as I can, but I won't spread false information to make things look like their heading for a utopian future. Linux is too far off for people to make the switch. Linux is accelerating in many fields, yes, but those are niche areas as well -- the same market that geeks derided Apple for. Apple is gunning for the mainstream again, and time will tell on who gets there first. Linux has a chance. I'm sure the Open Source way will fsck that up for them again. :(
