Not to start an epistemiological debate, but I wonder how you define "right" and "wrong" in the context of contemporary science?

I try not to :-) I don't think it's possible to prove a scientific theory (yet, anyway) but thinking about it, I would (for example) consider Einstein's theory as more correct, more "right", than Newton's...even though, in Newton's time, Occam's razor would have led me to support Newton.

Is there any evidence for string theory?

Well, according to the book (read it and enjoyed it), the problem is trying to find something to predict that could be tested.....the strings are so small that it's very difficult to show that they aren't points. As far as Occam's razor goes, string appears to be the more elegant theory, but the new theory tends to have the burden of proof....anyway, all Occam's razor is is a rough guide on what to work with...it doesn't actually have anything to do with what's "right" or "wrong"...

I doubt it was to make the guy look like a moron. They said it was difficult to get hold of anyone, the interview seems to have been conducted over the phone, and you know what the alternative to a verbatim account is; clean it up, send the final version back for approval, and then post it....

I doubt it uses that much power, compared to the cost of keeping the cookers running, etc. Maintenance and repairs I'll accept. Cleaning staff are required anyway whether you have robot or human so that's not extra, and probably same with deliveries. Construction maybe, unless that's part of the original price....

I guess I was wrong to say "No other costs" but I still maintain that it would be cheaper than a human employee in the long run (which you seem to agree with in your final sentence)....not that I expect you to still be reading this tho :-)

They seriously think that there is a market for a $150,000 machine ( plus maintenance) that only makes burgers and pancakes?!? You can pay a single fast-food cook for over 8 years for that amount--and he will cook everything on the menu.

Actually, as was pointed out, that's over 5 years, so:

$150,000 divided by 5 years, divided by 365 days, divided by 16 hours gives roughly $5.14 an hour.

I suspect that's a bit cheaper than most employees, with no other costs. Also, the machine seems to be a lot more efficient than a person...

I think it was supposed to be orbiting the sun directly opposite the earth, so we would never see from here....or something like that...(and the variations in Mercury's orbit were later used to show that relativity was correct?)

  20. The Scottish Ones on Dumb Laws · · Score: 2

The Scottish ones are a bit misleading I think. It's legal to trespass in Scotland, cos there's no trespass law. The reason for this is that much of Scotland is made up of large estates, and particularly in the Highlands, many folk live in crofts on those estates. They don't own the land they live on, but pay rent (though it's fairly minimal, and they have special rights to stop the estate owner throwing them off the land). If there was a trespass law, it would mean that there would be very few places you'd be allowed to wander about in the Highlands...there are plenty of other laws to stop people destroying the place...

The "guilty until proven innocent" one refers (I think) to poaching. If you're caught with a salmon, for example, on someone's estate, it's up to you to prove you came by it legally, rather than the other way about....what's more, if you're found guilty, anything you used in the process of poaching the salmon (including that shiny new Range Rover you have parked just down the road) can be confiscated. This is indeed a crappy law.

As for the others, AFAIK if a Scottish law falls into disuse, then it's no longer considered valid legally....maybe some expert can expand on that one...I believe that this is not the case in England.
