FYI Hebrew is written mostly right to left. That's why KDE work, although very welcome, is inadequate. It's mostly message translation stuff a la gettext(). I still cannot type Hebrew text properly.
Ahh...I forgot about this. I was thinking mainly of just translations of the text. I suppose the thing to do is to make sure the project is language independant at the start, taking into account that this may mean writing right to left/top to bottom/whatever. I think you'd have more luck with this concentrating on the KDE project, since all the components are supposed to conform to certain standards (I believe).
Don't get me wrong; I like to see different language support....it's a bit easier for my own particular "lesser used language" (Scottish Gaelic) since it's not really different to other Euro languages in its writing/spelling. Anyway, good luck!
Yes! I love this one. I was thinking of it while reading the CNet article, and was kind of hoping they'd include it. I guess it's a bit over technical for their target audience tho:-(
Why? Because no single Open Source(TM) project worth mentioning has adequate support for freakin' Hebrew, much less for Arabic
Erm...it's Open Source. I'm afraid that means that you'll have to encourage speakers of Hebrew and Arabic to contribute some time and effort.
Anyway, you're wrong cos I just looked up KDE. See this page and you'll notice Hebrew listed...maybe you can tell me it's not adequate yet, but then offer some support!

You might want to consider using SuSE. You'll get all the software mentioned above (and a lot more) and the install is fairly simple; including an easy X setup. KDE is the default desktop, and it looks pretty good just the way it is....of course, this being Linux, you're then free to have whatever mutant desktop takes your fancy.:-)
I am a person. I will decide if I want your product. The frequency of you telling me about it is not a factor. Learn.
And the advertisers agree with you. No doubt they'd much prefer that people who were interested in things like CodeWarrier (for example) saw that ad, while you saw an ad for something that appealed to you (but maybe hadn't thought of for a while, or hadn't seen before).
The trouble for them is how do they know what you want to see? One way is to find out what type of things you're interested in....and that leads us back to the topic at hand....
I wish all the folk calling the author of this article an idiot would read the damn thing first!
All their posts seem to go "The author's an idiot and I'll tell you why" and then proceed to explain exactly what the guy said in the article in the first place! Read the whole thing, please, before you post, and then realise that he isn't slagging off your favourite baby.
if its a full demo givin away, what does he plan to sell? how to make money when everyone has it?
The usual pattern is that the the demo/shareware version only has a few maps. Add-ons (extra maps and such) won't work with it. You need the full version to play the custom maps etc. I suppose they'll continue in this vein since it seems to net them a dollar or two.:-)
It only takes about 15 seconds to tell someone: "Side with the label goes on top, metal part goes in first." THERE. That wasn't so hard, now was it? Now he/she knows.
Nope. This is the wrong way to explain it, because they might come across a PC with the fdd on its side. "Angled corner to the eject button" is the correct way:-)
[DEEP BREATH] Ahhh...well. I think that people are being a bit harsh on Microsoft. I won't deny that I dislike their operating systems, and, to be honest, just about all their software apart from Age of Empires.:-) But there are too many folk here wanting to see Microsoft torn apart, and won't be happy till they see blood.
Limitations on Microsoft's activities should be the same as would be applied to any company. They should not be a special case. Although they have had a few (ahem!) shady practises, their virtual monopoly isn't entirely their fault. Certainly, very few hardware companies had the balls to stand up to them, even though it's clear that if they'd banded together they could have limited MS influence. There's also the practise of companies buying MS goods to consider. There have always been alternatives to NT for instance; ones which have been proven reliable over time. If a company then chooses to switch, simply because MS says it's for the best (what do you expect them to say?!) then it's their own fault when they get caught up in the Upgrade Cycle of Death.
One thing MS did do was make plenty software easily available to the masses. Windows (even NT) is pretty cheap compared to much of its competition. You might even argue that Linux (with GNU) is the next step in the Software for the People movement, providing affordable open software for anyone who wants it.
I guess the point is, people do have a choice now. Linux is a viable alternative. Go a bit easier on MS.
Phew. A post from me supporting MS. I'm away for a spot of skiing in Hell.
My biggest fear is that if it is known who is and is not a moderator, people will start "sucking up" to the moderators in an attempt to get higher scores on their post.
I'm not sure that this is such a concern. Sure, they can suck up to them, for as long as their 5 points last. There would be no way to tell who was a moderator, until they started moderating. What are the chances of sucking up quickly enough to get their approval before they run out of points?:-)
No offense, but I would think that at this point in time in Turkey, people could be doing a lot more useful things with their time than worrying about computer user groups
I guess people, even outside of Turkey, could be doing more useful things for those people than posting messages to slashdot...though I'm sure you've done a great deal for them already, since you wouldn't be criticising others otherwise....
As was pointed out elsewhere, this was submitted before the earthquake.
We have this Insight 486/66 at work that probably has over 6 months of win95 uptime.
Umm...not that I mean to question your word, but what about that 49 day bug? You know, where win95 was supposed to crash after 49 days (as acknowledged by Microsoft)?
This site just formats my comments as 1 really long comment with no seperate lines or paragraphs. THis ony began to happen to me this past month.
Just put the [P] tag in where you want a new paragraph, except with the less than/greater than signs instead of [] (I don't know how to get them to appear without being seen as a tag:-)).
An interesting viewpoint. I guess it's fairly easy to forget how confusing computers seemed at one time. There is a problem though with:
"4.There must be constraints on the users actions. "
Is this strictly true? There must be a reasonable way to make things easy to use without constraining the user....I'm not sure if becoming popular is the best thing for Linux if it means it has to be castrated first.:-)
No offense, but why was your posting instantly uprated to a "2" score?
If your posts are often upgraded, then you start defaulting to higher numbers; if they're consistently downgraded, then you'll start defaulting to zero score.
So, it's probably that he writes a lot of good posts. Either that or he does have a secret admirer with moderator status.:-)
On the subject of old classics (although this from the world of micros, AFAIK)... anyone recognise my nick?:-)
I think so. Repton (Mania?) was a game that was very popular on the BBC B, IIRC. It had a lizard type thing as the main character. Never played it personally, cos I had a Speccy:-)
It's probably your use of 'daveo' to refer to yourself, instead of just using 'me' and 'I'....and of course, it doesn't help that you aren't using capitalization. You may prefer this style, but the moderators change every day, and are made up of the average slashdot reader/poster, so if you're *continually* getting marked down, it's probably cos everyone finds it annoying.
Also, I suspect that with a.sig like yours, you're attracting negative moderator attention. I'd lose it if I were you.
