  1. I second that.... on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 1

What you say hits the nail on the head entirely. According to these punks (Metallica) Napster is nothign but a piracy tool. You and I both know that is bull crap. Unfortunately, the "metallica rulez!" crowd that was on Yahoo! last night bought it hook line and sinker.

I totally agree with your comment about them being egocentric. Every damn thing they said started with "As Metallica". I really wish the transcripts would be posted asap so people can see what I saw. To me they were saying "We are Metallica and you are not - now bow down before us and kiss our asses". That was exactly how they portrayed themselves.

In their chat they said they want to put Napster out of business. Well, they may just do that. But in the end, will they have won? Hell no.

I really pity those guys. They are sad little people.

  2. Let's have a gnutella demo day! on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 1

First, last night I was witness to that Metallica chat. It was horrid. I am not a fan of Metallica at all, but the guys in that band are so egotistical that it made me wanna puke. If one of my favorite bands ever acted that way, I would crush thier CDs to bits in a matter of seconds. But, I digress...

We have Linux Demo Days when MS releases their latest wares. So why don't we have a GNUtella demo day? I personally can't think of a better place to hold this event than out in the parking lot when Metallica comes to YOUR town this summer.

This thing is cool, but, as most have suggested, privacy could really be blown away. I am glad to see the guy is at least THINKING about this stuff while he is designing it instead of just bringing it to market willy nilly.

One thing I think could solve a lot of the problems everyone is bringing up is for the user to have to interact with it in order for the details to be received/transmitted, much like I do now with my Palm IIIx and the business card on it.

Say I want to remember some sign I saw... let me go up to the sign and swipe my doohickey across it to pick up the factoid.

Or say I am in a bar and some beautiful (but very strange) woman wants my phone number. Let me be the one to decide if I should be able to send her my real phone number or some pay phone down the street. Heck, even let me decide whether I am shown as a medical doctor or a garbage man. I mean, ya gotta impress SOME people :)

My luck though I would factoid that I was a garbage man to some woman who had a thing for smelly guys....

  6. Okay, here is my guess for what is gonna happen... on K7 Renamed "Athlon" · · Score: 2

I think what is going to happen now is that Compaq is going to now buy AMD.

Once they have bought AMD, they will put it under the Digital Equipment Corp. flag, and we will see lots and lots of really cool computers that read:

    CPU: DEC Athlon

Or maybe I am just wrong?

  7. Okay... I have heard of stupid things before, on Phoenix to embed bootup ads in BIOS · · Score: 1

but this one takes the cake. Who in the hell was the genius that thought this idea up? My guess is the Divx guys all got jobs there last week and needed to come up with an idea.

Sorry Phoenix, but you guys are about to crash and burn in a hard way. Award, Ami, and Mr. Bios are all on my good list now.

    What a joke!

  8. Re:Will RIAA take note? on DIVX is dead · · Score: 1

Hell no. Most of the royalties the RIAA gets their paws on only goes to a select number of bands. These guys are the ones that will be making sure the SDMI (Stupid Dumb Moneygrubbin' Idea-for-a-format) is only used for their stuff. Not that this is going to keep Joe Highschooler from making a MP3 of the CD, mind you.

What is starting to worry me is how we are now seeing the big guns buy all the little guys... AOL buys Winamp. Someone else buys Fraunhoffer(sp? Sorry - too lazy to look it up).

To me this is A Real Bad Thing(tm). That is the only way the RIAA is going to get their format everywhere is to get the other money grubbers to go along with their plans is to buy everything up and put the stuff in it. This is why I don't use Real Audio's stuff - they have that a2b stuff all over in it, plus it does all that encrypted MP3 stuff.

I had been using some other things to compress MP3 here, but since MusicMatch did all the things that Winamp/CDEX do with the 4.0 release this past week, I switched to it and acutally bought a copy of it! I just hope someone does not now come along and gobble up MM - which I am afraid is going to happen.

Anyway, you know it and I know it - any format that is designed by lawyers is doomed from the start.

BTW, check out Mojo Nixon's kick ass comments about MP3. It is well worth the read.

I never posted that message as a flame. A flame would have to be something that was mainly drivel.
A link to a Wired News story about your company is FAR from drivel - especially when it brings up some good questions about privacy. Sorry, but I value my privacy big time and will do everything I can to make sure other people will be able to value theirs as well.

I will admit I did not go to your site, nor have I ever been to your site, so I apologize if your policies have changed after Wired reported on the way you were originally going to handle user profiling.

I still however stand behind my original post.

I really like the lack of an Opt Out policy that will be around a while. That is really sweet. What a wonderful way for you all to get a buttload of money for your database up front by making sure EVERYONE gets loads and loads of junk mail!

I used to love it. I could whip out stuff sooo fast and squash bugs even faster.

But the higher ups just never got it where I work.

Some of my favorite stories about where I work:

1-I write this kickass GUI. I place all the controls about where they are, start hooking them up, and get the main functionality in there. I send it around to let folks see what a cool product it is going to be. I ask for responses to get some input on how it works and what needs to be changed. What does the BIG BOSS(TM) send back to me? "The labels on two controls do not line up." Pardon me? That is piddly ass shit. I wanna know what you think of how it is working!

    B) We go to this meeting and have the BIG BOSS(TM) meet with us. We tell him about our thoughts on this program we are writing. We ask him "what do you want this to do?" He tells us that there are three things this program has to do: A) It has to be fast B) It has to be accurate C) It has to look good. What kind of help is that?!?!? Isn't that our goals 99% of the time? What was bad is everyone except me starts writing these idiotic comments down on their paper. I got fed up and said "No duh! We want to know what you want this to do! We don't want givens!"

I am still at the same shithole place. The attitude from the higher ups is still the same. I swear my life feels like a Dilbert comic strip 99% of the time. I have pretty much given up trying to change things for the better and having them shot down all the time. I have good ideas, but nobody will act on them. To be honest, I am about ready to grab ahold of the source code and flee this place and roll my own system.

    *sigh*

  17. plugging into a phone jack is hard? on Anti-DIVX article · · Score: 1

ooooo boy... I hear this stupid pro-divx argument all the time... so, for lack of anything else to do today, I am now answering it.

Yes. Plgging into a phone jack is hard! Here is why:

Suppose (like me) the nearest phone is in the kitchen.

Problem 1: After sneaking it around a wall, then another wall, then another wall, then over the back door curtain rod, you find that the cord is about 10 feet too short.

Problem 2: The phone in the kitchen hangs on the wall.

Now, let's see you hook your Y-splitter up to that and hang the phone up. First, it looks like a half assed job done buy a Winbloze user ("I can be a programmer! I have a computer at home!")

I do not own a DIVX (DVD all the way!) but I do own a Dish Network D-VHS deck. It has a kickass caller-id unit in it to show you who is calling while you are watching tv (this totally rocks, btw).

And yes, there is now a jack right behind the TV - but I do NOT have to have my Dish receiver hooked up... it is totally optional on my part.
