In this case, Microsoft has a long history of abusing user and partner trust, so why should anyone believe anything they do now is trustworthy? It doesn't matter if they produce the "best product ever" because some (maybe even many) people will always consider their actions in the past as relevant to what they're doing now. And those people, historically, have good reason to be suspicious.
It is examples like this that drive so many people's distrust of Microsoft. That and Google seems to be able to find more relevant results on Microsoft's own servers than Microsoft can (searching MSDN, for instance, or Microsoft downloads). It boggles my mind.
