I remember working for a bank controlling institution back then, and I had a conversation with one of their auditors. I asked him what bizarre rules are applied when it comes to lending money to people who have no product, no business plan and nothing at all, but say something about "internet" and getting millions. He said it's an investment. I asked "into what". He said "the future".

6 months later the whole shit came down like 18 months later two towers. Just with more damage and fallout.

We're still trying to recover from that future investment. The lesson to learn here was that you don't let idiots in ivory towers with ZERO connection to actual work run your economy. Sadly, nobody bothered to learn it.

It makes sense when you have the "problem" in civilized countries that you cannot forcefully end a peaceful protest without looking like the bad guy. Or maybe you can't do it at all because people actually have a right to assemble and protest peacefully.

That's one of the aspects, another is that Indie games are usually way, WAY more mod-able than AAA games. Why? Because Indies usually have no interest in trying to rip you off with DLC afterwards. They lack the time to do it anyway, so why bother trying to keep people from creating addons?

Some even went out of their way to provide sensible APIs to enable mods, which led to a very rich and interesting gaming experience because you suddenly had a ton of content creators that threw enhancements and augmentations at you for free. Some go as far as sitting in an IRC channel all day answering mod and addon developer questions.

In the end you suddenly had a game that was way, way more than its original maker envisioned or could possibly have done himself. Yes, those success stories are few (KSP being one of the few, and that was done by a team that knew marketing well), but creating an open environment pretty much always led to user input and user created content. Even if all that meant was that the game eventually got a translation into Mongolian.
