  1. WHO should have more power/influence on WHO Bid To Regulate Health Sites · · Score: 1
I believe that the WHO is better at providing information on health issues than any HMO in the US. In fact I think HMO's in the US often try to keep information from people and flout WHO guidelines when its their interest.

Giving the WHO control over .health sites would hopefully let them influence other health organizations and maybe even provide a forum for individuals to share information on health organizations in their region.

  4. Global Economy on Authentication Via Geographical Location? · · Score: 1
Its time to stop caring about where people are physically, as it often serves to discriminate against people.

Companies and governments are often trying to think of ways to profit or reduce losses, by treating people differently based on location. The sooner we take a more global, even national, approach the better.

  5. persona filter on Enter The 'Stupid Patent Tricks' Contest · · Score: 1
A browser plug-in that allows you to filter out information generated by or about a specified person. Kinda like the author filter feature that slashdot has, but for the whole web.

Whenever trying to download a page that has any mention of the person you want to filter out, you'll get a dialog that says something like "This page contains mention of, or was written by [Person]. Do you want to view this page?".

I could use this plug-in to filter Jon Katz from the web, woohoo!

  6. H1B visas suck on Senate Pushes H1-B Visa Bill · · Score: 1
While I bet most people on H1B visas in the US are really thankful for them, there are many downfalls to them. They do allow employers to abuse workers because the H1B visa employee can not quickly switch jobs and risks deportation if they are without a job for more than a couple of weeks.

At the end of the H1B visa term, these people have to leave the US. While that's just part of the deal when getting a H1B visa, many of these people make a home for themselves in the US and it is painful for them to leave.

So, I don't think expanding H1B visas is a good answer to the shortage of technical workers. It is a bad short-term solution. Free education is a better answer and should see results in 3 to 4 years.

  8. preventing tracking and the benefits of tracking on More Web Site User Data Gathering Revealed · · Score: 1

Not downloading images of certain size is a stupid suggestion and would make lots of web designers and monkeys look incompetent. Another browser feature that might work, would be to only allow the components of a page to be downloaded from the same domain. That way only the people that publish the site get the data, what they do with it from then on is another story. But this would help put DoubleClick out of business. It would also fuck with people in the media buy business as most banners send stats to the people who are paying for the space, which brings me to my next point. The statistics collected on the web help pay for the web and its development. Statisitcs are used to decide on budgets, gathering investment and understanding where a site is doing things right and where its not. These are necessary evils if we want to encourage the development of the web. Server logs often don't provide enough of this information, unless you have extended your logging to be able track users across multiple visits.

  9. Open source Project on Ideas for High School Computer Projects? · · Score: 1

Have them choose an open source project they might find interesting like Mozilla or one of the Apache projects, and let them choose extend whatever way they want. Something visual is always good for people learning how to program as then they can see the results of their labor.

  12. Is it Lock-in or are people just stupid on Web Site "Lock-In" · · Score: 1

Many people complain of being locked into a site because the back button doesn't work. The MOST common reason for this, is when a site opens a new window that completely hides the original, and the user doesn't realize its a new window. A new window doesn't have the same history as the original and you can't go back beyond the first page shown in the new window.
