  1. Are you qualified? on Measuring LAMP Competency? · · Score: 2, Interesting

If you have to ask how to interview software engineers for competency, maybe you are not qualified to be interviewing software engineers.

Good experience is far more important than any certification. Wanna see if they can design and build software? Give them a problem that requires they outline a design and then have them code up specific pieces like DB table schema, table queries, classes, templates etc.

  2. Grow Up on The Definitive Evisceration of The Phantom Menace *NSFW* · · Score: 1, Insightful

The prequel to the movies you saw as a child didn't live up to your expectations? Perhaps you should take a closer look at those first three movies, and maybe you will realize they are all crappy movies meant to be enjoyed by kids.

Or you may call the "Verizon Wireless Opt Out Line" at 1-800-333-9956 and your request will be honored.

I couldn't find the setting on their website, but the 1-800 number works.

  4. Better Requirements Gathering on Reuse Code Or Code It Yourself? · · Score: 1

Sounds to me like you need to improve your requirements gathering. If you had gathered all the possible requirements, and tried to predict a few also, then you could have likely selected a framework to match your current project's scope, and the scope creep also.

I took a 10% pay cut moving to my current job, but I'm more content with my job and company than I've been in a long time.

If you really need to pay off debt; take the money, pay off your bills and look to switch again in a year or so.

  7. Bad idea on UK Firm To Release 'Screaming' Cell Phone · · Score: 1

Sounds like a good way to get UK thieves to throw your cell phone in the thames. Presumably the owner would prefer to get it back.

A better idea might be to lock up the phone and have it display a number the owner can be reached at and maybe a reward amount for returning it.

  8. Browsers and Standard to blame on Dvorak Rants on CSS · · Score: 2, Informative

Besides the poor implmentation of the browser makers of the CSS standard, the standard itself has plenty of flaws or omissions. Even people with quite a bit of experience creating web pages have trouble using CSS for certain layouts, this speaks to the basics of CSS. No wonder people have been pissed off at the W3C, their standards are lacking and they can't get proper industry-wide implementation of them.

  11. Party like it's 1999 on Ajax Is the Buzz of Silicon Valley · · Score: 1

AJAX is simply a method for Javascript to make HTTP requests and receive the response. Sure, its cool and will make SOME web applications better. But I've already seen some examples of AJAX that could have been written just as nicely without it.

It's just another technology that can be used well or badly and really doesn't deserve all the hype. Most web developers who know how to program can probably figure out how to use it in less than an hour, but most product managers will probably need a few days to figure out how they can or cannot use it for their websites. It will probably be a small chapter in the next edition of Javascript: The Definite Guide.

Ooh! the web is getting better! No shit, simple progress, nothing worth buying stock in. But good luck to all those WML, Web 2.0, buzzword investors out there. I hope it's not my money you're throwing away.

  14. Mobile Phones are the problem on Web Design Hampers Mobile Internet? · · Score: 1

Flashy web design isn't the problem, mobile phones are just too small for accessing information designed to fit much larger screens. That's why WML and WAP came about, to find another way to present the same information to smaller devices.

  19. Article Not Worth Posting on Browser Wars II: The Saga Continues · · Score: 2, Interesting

This article by PPK is a piece of trash. If I didn't know a little about the evolution of browsers, I might have believed it was informative and based on facts. But it is mostly a viewpoint of the writer, who presents his own beliefs as facts, kind of like Jon Katz.

End-users, there is no single group known as end-users. Today there are several groups of end-users, has been for years. Some care about what browser they use, and some are just excited by the fact they can turn a computer on and open a browser, any browser. There are the mac-users, geeks, developers, newbies, daytime/nightime surfers, business users and many more. Having seen the browsers stats of two similar sites, aimed at different demographics, I know that different people use different browsers, for different reasons.

Explorer was succesful, because it was always there, on windows. Even developers use it for that very reason sometimes. Other browsers have failed or succeeded mostly because of this. Developers, no matter what their preference is, must develop for the majority. The preference of developers is relevant only when they become end-users.

Their are no more browser wars, there are just distribution wars and returns on investment. The browser with the best distribution will dominate the market. And companies paying for website development will only support browsers that have a significant percentage of hits to their site.

  20. Email Clients on Another Millionaire Spammer Story · · Score: 1
Let's stop blaming the losers who respond to Spam and the Spammers themselves who are just responding to market demand and the lure of easy money.

Why have the providers of free web email and the creators of email clients not created email software that allow users to reject all unauthorized email? The process would be similar to managed email lists where unauthorized email addresses get their email rejected and there is a simple way for people to request authorization. It should be simple to prevent spam software from figuring out how to send messages requesting authorization.

  22. Feel Good on Unreasonable Searches When Going to Work? · · Score: 1, Interesting
I'm surprised at the number of people who think that there is really some increased level of security through imposing bag searches on employees. Most people who have worked somewhere for a while can think of many ways to bypass security and commit genocide. Its the same with home security, everyone knows how to break into their own house without having to actually break anything.

As some airline employees have said, the added security at airports is a sham, and only serves to reassure the public into a false sense of security.

People would be better off preparing themselves to die instead of worrying about it every minute of their lives.
