This whole line of logic is also based on the theory that if I could not download a mp3 of a given song that I would buy that CD to get that song. This is just plain untrue. Most of the time I only want 1 or 2 songs off of a CD and do not want to pay $20 to get those. A new very workable model would be for the band *not* the record company to put a good MP3 up on a website and I and I think many other would gladly give them a couple of bucks for a couple of songs. In the end they make more than they do under the current model and I have music the way I want it. In other words talk to me give me value and life is good don't bitch and moan that you can't shove crap down our throats anymore.

Some decent points and I have to agree it is good to see something good from Katz. But I have to disagree on the copyright "infringement" point. Copyrights can not be enforced on the net it is impossible and will get more so. I have to disagree with Katz I think the net will become more secure. And freedom will increase as a result. This also threatens the government. I don't have my copy of "The Diamond Age" with me but once it becomes really secure no one can track down anyone else. So my take on this right now alot of crap is produced and shoved down our throats because those with the cash can do so. The power the net gives us is to preview for ourselves see what we like and what we don't and consume that which is *good*. And also the power to create for ourselves. What this means is you have to create good stuff that people will want to pay for since you can no longer force them to pay for crap. Think about it if your friend writes a piece of good code for you you are really likely to do something for him in return. When M$ pumps out some crap you are really likely to fire up the burner. So does the net destroy anything? no no it does not. Will it force people to get really creative and start to care again? Yes yes it will. In other words jump on the cluetrain and have fun.

This is the attitude that allows things like this to happen. "Unless you've got something to hide, why do you need your privacy?" Simply put because I do not want everyone to know everything about me and because it is very easy to abuse this kind of info. This attitude also is based on the thought that the government is looking out for you and that real networks is always thinking about my welfare. Simple information is power the more info you have about me the more power you have over me and I just don't trust the government or a company that collects info in a very backdoor fashion that much. You point out that if the bank took the time to look they could figure out what you buy and where and draw some conclusions about that. I don't know about you but my bank has a policy that says that they will not. Simply put because something could be done does not mean that it should be. The other diff between the credit card/cellphone/telco example and this is that if you think about it for about half a minute it becomes clear that they can know this info it is part and parcel with the service obvious stuff. With this "download demon" it is not at all obvious and there is no reason that it has to be this way unlike your examples. So you say you don't need your privacy then put up a post with your real name, cellphone number, address and ip address if you are lucky enough to have a static.

You are right the whole deal in Linux could and must be made easier. I just really really hate this myth that winders is easy. It is not and in fact in many places it is harder because everything must be done from the GUI many times it would be much easier to (as a support person) be able to have the user do a keystroke combo or go to a command prompt and do whatever they need to do. In fact where I work (mixed NT/Netware with some AIX servers)I often take users into the command prompt even when there is a to do it through the GUI. IMHO, Users as a group do not think what we show them they don't read help files or docs. Therefore if it is easy for me to do it with them and for them to get on with whatever they do it is a good thing.

They have no idea about what is going on and your average user is so scared of the box they are not going to play with it at all to figure it out. Documentation is the only answer and yes Linux could use better docs but winders really is *not* very easy or obvious for a end user.
