    Over half of what we produce goes straight to the landfill (in one fashion or another). The 'sacrifice' angle is bullshit. There is no need to submit to any authority that demands it. If they demand that we cut the waste and contamination, then that is different. But to ration is intolerable and inhuman.

    Well, there really is little wrong with telling people to pollute less, especially since technical issues are becoming increasingly trivial. But if the whole *we must do something* routine can get get us ginned up for war so easily, there's no reason not to try it here and see what kind of reaction it provokes. Some times the magic works, some times it doesn't. Going back to my original post, I only said we are not required to follow bad example.

    Well, we can complain about the FAA all we want, but I can't remember the last last time there was a serious airline wreck in the States. As for medical tools, it's too bad the Snap On truck doesn't have any.

    If I stand on brakes on my roadster with huge disks and sports tires I can guarantee that your minivan will rear-end me from a typical safe following distance.

    Not necessarily so, the 'three second rule' (that is the minimal safe following distance) will keep the minivan safe (if the driver is awake) even if you hit a brick wall.
