Ya ya same ole argument, I can show you some fairly large linux desktop installations and the users are just tripping all over them selves trying to figure it out. Clicking on a desktop icon takes a butt load of training now doesn't it. Hell I even know one city govt running it and the users never even mention a computer it is finally just something they use to get work done. Choice of desktop is the key thing, I made the mistake of deploying kde and we had to go back and change it. We no only user redhat something with a bluecurve desktop since it is the best all around polished.
Actually I would never deploy straight mozilla we always use firebird for thin client deployments. I cannot say I have been on a even marginal network with 200ms latency. Hell I get better than that off of a cable modem across the internet to nearly any site.
A couple of hints
No screensavers all of them have been removed
No fancy background they have a straight color background to keep refresh rates down.
We currently use kde but are switching to bluecurve because of it's polish.
20 of those clients are wireless and that works fine as well.
I dont seem to be having much in the way of bandwidth problems running 150 desktops off of a single server. It takes about 150 k sustained bandwidth to suppor that. Now come back when you know what you are talking about.
I will stick with my Python as it is really free, yes I can even pack it in with my project and give it to anyone I want. Coding in java is like writing a macro in MS word and saving the document. I refuse to had the key to my code over to someone else.
Network usage per 150 desktops is max 200k peak at the nic (practically nothing). Each user has a home directory that is for individual customization. Each user can have totally different software and no nothing needs to be on the client or is it desirable.
Well said, linux is not windows and should not be deployed in the same manner. The Windows deployment model is based on selling licenses and does nothing for efficiency. If you are deploying linux and not doing it thin client you are doing it wrong.
Just loaded up a walmart box with fedora for my sister last night. Got to work this morning and ordered up a bunch of HP linux workstations. So yes the time has long since come.
In my opinion if it is not it should be illegal wiretapping if a law enforcement official does this copying without a warrant anyhow. I don't see how it hurts law enforcement at all.
I really don't see the reasoning behind anyone actually wanting to deal with { } ; just to have a free form language. What does context-free grammer do for you? Is it fun to type all that extra garbage, does it add to the functionality of the language? I write C C++ java etc but I have yet to see what the extra cruft adds to these languages. I don't really enjoy tracking down curly braces in heavily nested code.
Have you ever seen code that had stuff like this in it.
Ok coward perhaps Microsoft should quit using python. Perhaps it was all smoke and mirrors that they paid to port it to windows. No coward you did not list a darn thing that I cannot do with standard python. No I guess BitTorrent is not a scalable distributed application. Boy I guess every argument you just made fell flat on it's face.
The future of java as I see it is very uncertain and is even more so now. That being said I could really care less as I pretty much use Python for everything now. Python does everything that java can do and it does so freely and more productively. Or perhaps I should use C# and have that pulled out from under me whenever MS desires. Java and C# are crufty languages anyhow.

Only analyst should use UML Stick drawings, it gives them something to do. When they hand me that 18 inch thick book of drawings it gives me something to rest my coffe cup on.
You say this, mr relative.. If you choose to run windows I am unable and unwilling to support you. If you would like to run linux then I am more than willing to support you.
You may need to rethink that idea if you have any sort of state regulations like we do here in Wisconsin. Here you cannot make any sort of man made diversion, dam etc without drawing a serious amount of heat. It is quite likely you will run into the same sort of problems where you live as well.
Sure there is a performance hit but in nearly every case it is front ended with apache. This allows you to use apache caching which greatly increases the performance.
I bet if they where willing to bust out a checkbook and hit the plone developer list they can get all of the support their little hearts desired. Not only that but they would likely be working with someone that actually wrote it instead of a helpdesk dork telling you to reinstall.
I built it for RHEL 2.1 and RHEL 3.0 and fedora. Dont mess around with the rpm it pretty much sucks. The best way I found is to build a custom python running in a user directory and put zope and plone on top of that. It keeps you environment clean and moving it later is a simple directory copy.
Plone two is by far the best portal / cms system I have ever tried. It spanks the pants off of every single commercial system as well and I have tried some expensive ones. It is the flexibility and power of python that makes it so great.
I seen the leap cracker downloadable for at least several months now. This means it has been in use for quite some time no sense in worrying about it now.
Fedora
click on the clock on the lower right corner of the desktop and select a ntp server from the dropdown list....done deal

And I will give you another hint, use TIGHT VNC works great even over a modem. I know I remote machines in china with it every day.
http://www.nomachine.com/screenshots.php there go check out nx it works better than citrix or terminal server in my opinion.

No for dialup and dsl users you pay yes I said pay for a copy of nomachine (go look it up) it makes x efficient even across a modem.

Let me catch you downloading a ms app and I will be the first person to turn you into the BSA. If you want to run MS products then pay for it.

Why would I wish to make linux unstable by running it on a second rate operating system.
