  1. Kind of expected this on Is firewire dying? · · Score: 1

I kind of expected it to die when
    A. I read somewhere apple was charging manufacturers 1 or 2 dollars for each firewire port produced. (IRC)
    B. I have yet to see it in any machines.

You can do that w/ sendfax, its pretty easy, and works. Look in the sendfax docs (dont remember which file in /usr/doc/sendfax it is) but there is a pointer to a web page that tells you how to use this program called respond? (grep respond /usr/doc/sendfax/) that allows you to print to a special printer in windows that is actually a fax, then respond opens and asks for the phone number etc. Works nicely, and its all free software I believe --nrl

of course the people that are doing these things might not want the software to be publically accepted. they like being different and "more advanced" by running a minority o/s. running papasmurf doesnt make you more advanced -- it makes you a script kiddie

Im the exact opposite, I am concerned about linux becoming popular just because it brings more people like the above (script kiddies, 31337 h4x0r5) into the community (lowers the quality of the linux user gene pool so to speak).

  13. invalidate the results on Ask Slashdot: Echelon Protection? · · Score: 1

The way I understand this, basically a computer sits on the line between point a and point b, then searches for keywords on communications between the two. In theory couldnt the world just invalidate the results by making all (non business related obviously) personal communication have the keywords in it? Like have your .sig say "Im going to bomb building X on date Y"? I realize that it would probably be virtually impossible to do, but its an interesting idea. Another idea (for the conspiracy theorist) would be that the govt's could use distributed computing (seti, distrib.net) through some kind of front (like seti or distrib.net) so we would be "chaining ourselves unknowingly" (for lack of better term), by giving the govts the data they want to monitor. We would never know since the clients are binary only, sure we could decompile it, but being the govts of the world they would be able to jail you or whatever before you were able to tell many people since they are monitoring all personal communications.

  14. Re:It's the moon! on NASA Crashing Probe to Look for H2O on Moon · · Score: 1

Just because we can mess up other planets/moons doesnt necessarily mean we should. Granted one satellite isnt going to affect anything (assuming it doesnt hit a martian king or something =), But we have already f'd up this planet enough as it is, do we really want to start screwing up possible future habitats before we even move in? Say we crash this satellite, then we say, Hey we already crashed one, a little more trash wont hurt anything right? But it does. The first time you do something is the hardest, every time after is cake. So we eventually make the moon a big galactic landfill, and then we say, Hey, lets crash something into mars. you get the point. This is all *very unlikely*, but it is very possible if we arent careful.

Every time some kid kills somebody (be it his parents, his girlfriend, his classmates, whoever), and it makes it into the media, they always blame it on that kids recreational activities (music, movies, tv, internet, games(doom, dungeons and dragons)). Granted its very possible that there is some kid that has never thought about going and killing person/people. And its also possible that listening to some lyric, or watching some movie, playing some game, gives them that idea. But what the media never says is that something has to be fundamentally wrong to actually entertain the idea for more than a second. Nobody mentions the m(b)illions of people that watch/read/listen to/use all the same resources that this fucked up little kid does, but never have this problem.
