I suppose I should expect a comment like that from someone with a "Lynx-enhanced" homepage. Seriously though, I'd be happy to fill you in on more details if you're not just out trolling.
For a few ideas of what might be in store from virtual worlds like Second Life in the future check out a trailer made for the "Federal Consortium of Virtual Worlds." This group has over a thousand members from government, the private sector, and educational institutions.
I wouldn't call this project abandoned as much as it is still under development. Reading the previous comments, my answer to having easier ways to find the temperature outside is "YES.":-) I recommend turning on a TV, reading the newspaper, or surfing to a web site of your choosing. This visualization should be considered a beta with the intention of showing what Second Life (or technologies like Second Life) may be capable of in the future. (Slashdotted before prime time, ouch)
NOAA and ESRL are looking at Second Life as a possible platform for educational outreach as well as visualizing some of our data much of which is inherently 3D rather than 2D. Our island, which will have more of a focus on education rather than data visualization is slated for opening in the middle of November. If you are interested in more information you can visit our web site (also under construction) at http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/outreach/sl/
One interesting note: I think the ice shifts about 10 meters per year at the pole. Don't know what the rest of Antarctica is like, but it presents an interesting problem if they are planning on laying the cable on the ground...
Open bidding's taken care of too: "Because these services are considered a gift, the city won't have to publicly bid the project."
I was under the impression that government agencies had fairly strict rules regarding the acceptance of gifts from companies that they do business with or plan on doing business. Perhaps the fact that it's a "gift" takes care of the open bidding requirement, but I think it's still violates the law. Does anyone have more information?
This is an important issue for any US government website due to "Section 508". Basically, if it isn't accessible it isn't allowed. Guess I won't be getting this product anytime soon -- kind of a shame.

Why don't search engines ignore or at least score differently links from subdomains within the same domain? It seems like that might solve the problem...

Issue a portable ultrasound generator that runs off a battery and spits out random noise. Should be enought to turn any directed ultrasound beams into garbage. Or maybe you could combine this generator with noise cancellation technology and make the voices go away... Sounds a lot more expensive though.
Who knows if this would actually work, but it might be fun at a concert...
We set this camera up a couple months ago and it shows the construction of the new South Pole station. I think the camera on this guy's web site is broken. If it is the same camera I am thinking about, the picture looks pretty nasty a few weeks ago. We had to replace our old camera since it just froze to death...
I don't know... I agree that the palm certainly isn't as easy as a laptop, but I use AvantGo and average 75-100KB per session. Perhaps I'm a little above the average user, but 100KB still seems a little skimpy for an entire month!
From my understanding the only way to get Internet access is the palm.net service agreement. Not that I would buy either one, but I would certainly stay away from their "associate plan!" 100KB is next to nothing and at 20 cents for each additional KB I think most people would surpass the "executive plan" in less than a week.
Also, $40 dollars for the exectutive plan still seems a little expensive...
I work for the Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory which is part of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). If anyone is interested, our lab launches balloons that help measure the level of ozone in the atmosphere at the South Pole.
Does anyone know if the spellchecker.xpi included with Netscape 6.2 works with Mozilla 0.9.5? I'd be using Mozilla full time for my mail client if it wasn't for the fact that I can't spel...;-)
