I know someone who has a BLU phone as well. When that news broke, I sent my friend a note about it. They told me that they had already received a notification from BLU about the problem and issued a fix already.

So... I think that is pretty much the best case scenario. A company learns about a problem, notifies their users and fixed the problem. Not sure that you could ask for more.

I am pretty sure this is just an aesthetic thing. I guess you can have some notifications along the edge of the screen which are visible from the horizontal plane but I am not really sure how useful it is. I see edge notifications as simply an excuse or justification for execs to buy flashy expensive devices.

  7. Clearly this is to make the device more slippery and prone to breakage. Which would then necessitate a replacement device. Another step in forced obsolescence.

  8. Yeah exactly.... It would take like 2 seconds of consideration before any human being realizes that they are about to throw away a life of reasonable comfort for chaos and war and sacrifice. Why are we going to war? Because we elected a pumpkin who may or may not do stuff we don't like! Oh? Like what? Like giving tax cuts to people and repealing health insurance! ...

  9. Yeah, my "uh oh" moment was during the first debate when both candidates were advocating for gun control. But since both had said basically the same thing they couldn't demonize HRC for saying it.

  10. Just like any other electronics company, they have winners and they have losers. It all just depends on the product team and other factors.

I used to have an RCA boombox that was a thing of engineering beauty. It sounded great, it looked great, it was powerful and had high end features. After such a great experience I bought a few more RCA products and realized pretty much everything else they made was crap. That boombox was a flash in the pan winner for that company.

I am sure it is the same for Sony.

My dad was a Sony die-hard. I remember when we bought the big Sony Trinitron television in the '80s. It was huge and it had wheels! But that tank lasted for probably 20 years before it started to show problems.

I don't have much experience with current Sony products because I, like you apparently, don't like the company all that much.

I think what you mean to say is that under the current system we cannot censor the Internet.

However, if enough effort were brought to bear, it absolutely could happen. Think of it as a redesigned Internet where all of the current protocols don't work. It is built from the ground up to be censored first. Technically, it could happen (it very likely won't, but that doesn't mean it is impossible).

So then you ask "where are we now and how far away are we from this hypothetical CensorNet?" make your benchmark. Ask the question again in another couple of years, make your benchmark. Which way is the Internet headed? Open and free or closed and censored? You tell me.

To say that something is impossible is just boxing yourself in to a particular way. Yeah, it is the way things work currently, but that doesn't mean things can't change.

it beats the hell out of a paper map.

A couple of years ago, I might have agreed.

Now? I don't know.... I like the paper map for the same reasons as the paper book. You can reference it, set it down and come right back to it. There are also useful things like address breaks and elevation on a paper map that I have never seen on my phone's map.

Also, the map is way superior when it comes to viewing the whole picture. On my phone, I can only ever see a detailed view OR the full view, not both at the same time.

Phone map can be convenient, especially for turn-by-turn navigation. But for just basic map use (like when planning a trip), I still prefer the paper map.

Also, a paper map doesn't require batteries :)

I really don't understand this us/them mentality that people keep spewing. We all work together, we are family members, coworkers and fellow human beings with the same exact needs.

I work in a heavily republican environment. But they are all good people and I respect my co-workers. I don't believe in some of their choices, but who cares? Why should someone's choice for president make them the enemy? It's just stupid.

The only reason I can come up with is that it is in the best interest for those in power to keep the voting base divided. So all these "problems" are weaponized and sold to us as the bogey man coming to take our children.

Would you, in every case, say, "no, sorry, they don't deserve that because they worked on a team"? (as I am sure you are aware, nobody works in a vacuum. Nobody accomplishes something completely by themselves. You are always standing on the shoulders of giants.)

I am guessing that your answer would be no.

If it is, then you have to ask why you did it in this case?

Sexism is one possible answer. Therefor, it is not a random conclusion.

You accidentally used the broad tip brush there. Oops.

I know, from personal experience, that boredom isn't the cause. It's the fact that these devices have become a crutch.

Do you even know anybody's phone number anymore? I mean, actually memorized? How about street addresses or even directions to places? How often are you talking to someone while driving? Even "hand's free" talking is still distracted driving. How often do you need to seek through several layers of menus to find the thing you want to listen to? How about notifications from the device? Do you need to know the response to that important query you threw out there before you got in the car?

There are hundreds of reasons for using your mobile device while in the car (driving or not) because these devices do hundreds of things.

Just like the only solution to not getting "hacked" is to turn your computer off, the only solution to not being distracted while driving is to turn your device off. But that is like turning off a portion of your brain nowadays. Sad but true.
