I know that this is anecdotal but I have never had an issue with Skype. As a matter of fact, it works better than every other VoIP product I have tried.
I just wish they would separate out the chat component into a stand-alone product though... I hate having a Skype chat with someone and then find 100 unread messages on my phone...
Yep, and in my apt building we have fiber to the basement and G.fast DSL (1Gbps) up to the unit.
Even if we opt out of that full 1Gbps, we have the option for 100, 60, 40 and 20Mbps DSL.
To contrast, the cable company can only deliver 10Mbps into our unit. I tried it for about a day before I canceled that service... I was effectively getting only 2Mpbs.
When I was last in the job market, I just handed out my GV number to everyone and put it in my online resumes knowing that the number would effectively become public knowledge.
It has 2 really great benefits. 1. your phone never rings 2. you get voice to text transcription of every message.
It is now 4 years later and I STILL get 1 or 2 calls every day on that number... but it doesn't bother me at all.
I think a lot of these shady call center operate in a gray area.
While robocalls may be illegal, there are several exceptions.
One common exception is that if you make the calling process so that it has a human involved (click to call), this is not considered a "robocall". So someone can just click a button several times to initiate several outbound calls and only get the ones that answer routed to him/her.
Another is if you are already "opted in", the call is not illegal. There are all kinds of ways to get opted in to a list. One way is if you ever put your phone number into any web form. The operator of that form can then just sell that number onto a list. You need to be very careful about who you give your number out to.
Another way is if you already have a relationship with the party calling you. Similar to opting in, if the company you have a relationship with sells your information, I think the relationship transfers with the info.
So, anyway, people get work where they can. You cannot judge someone for working for a "corrupt" company... I mean, do you have the same scorn for the janitor at a law firm where all the C levels are engaged in illegal activity?
The cheater wins because of the cheats. but it is not really about winning, it is about enjoying other people's pain. Even if it is about winning, the mental gymnastics required to make the cheater believe that it was justified are not all that complex. People do that kind of thing all the time. Take any given person's political beliefs. A lot of people will believe what they believe and have no trouble at all performing the necessary justifications in their head to bolster their stance.
Why would you NOT want an SD card if it was available? More space is good.
To say (as the GP is suggesting) that people don't want these feature is BS. It is simply the manufacturers determining what people "want" for them and then people not raising a fuss about it because it is "good enough"
Seriously though, why in the crap did MS kill MSN messenger? It was actually pretty popular and it worked well. It was the only reason I kept an active Hotmail account for many years (now the MSA useful again with Windows 8/10 and Windows Phone).
Skype chat is just horrid in comparison...
I have used Trillian for years and continue to use it to interface with FB, AIM and GTalk.
If Apple builds the technology in to a platform which already has widespread use, then that technology will have widespread use as well... It doesn't say anything else about the technology however (whether or not it is good, or even if it is useful).
It's like saying IE was the best browser because it was so widely used for a time... but that was only because it was the default browser on the dominant (at the time) platform.

I agree with you about the first 2 episodes, but the 3rd one was brilliant! Loved it! That was a real return to the old days.
We will keep them super ultra extra mega secure... promise.
Why hasn't the Do Not Call list worked?
VoIP is the answer to this question.
The telcos are no longer really in charge of the traditional telephone world. They have all moved on to selling wireless and backbone services.

Except that there are all kinds of ways for robocalls to not be illegal.
Also, for you to equate a call center peon to a burglar is pretty disingenuous.
Seriously, get a Google voice number.

Stealing bread for your family is noble.... at least that is what the movies tell us...

Yeah, because as we all know back doors don't exist in Cisco routers... oh wait
Well, at least their Linksys products have never been exploited... oh darn
Hmm, I am sure that their Call Manager has never been... damn it!
Yeah see, here is what I think happens.

How many "new lows" can /. suffer?
I mean... by now we have passed all the way through the Earth and are, perhaps, halfway out of the Solar System...
Every single article has at least 1 "new low" comment... clearly they can't all be true.
Man.... lettuce for dinner again?
And now they will do both.
Walled garden for those that want that.
Somewhat lower walls for those that don't.
Microsoft did that, and they have basically trashed consumer adoption of their own platform as a result.
You know that Surface is extremely profitable for MS right?
To say that they trashed consumer adoption is simply not true. Quite a lot of people are adopting Surface devices.
exactly.

I don't buy it.
I think that manufacturers do whatever they can to cut costs and foist things on people as "features"
Then, when people buy the devices it is seen as proof that the consumer wants these things.
What about the 'ol hard reset option of removing the battery?
This is no longer an option on phones without a removable battery.
Also, getting the IEMI or serial number can only be done through software on the device itself now.
It also means that any "slots" (sd cards, hdmi, etc) need to be on the outside of the device which then discourages their use.
I sort of get the aesthetic thing... but if you want that, just get an iPhone... why does everyone have to copy what Apple does?
Yeah, because all the eagles are good for is a glorified taxi service right?
Wahhhh, eagles where were you when I needed you?
Tell me, where is the story about anyone ever doing anything for the eagles? sheesh....
But then the drone operators will get drone buster busters....
finish my MSN chat client... *doh*

Sounds like a good enough concept to make 2 movies...
Seems like this is the obvious choice.
Maybe just the headlines or the first paragraph and then link to a compressed version of the image file or PDF (not the TIFF itself for Jebussake).
welcome our new crispy overlords...
Aside: Anyone else think of a drawer in the refrigerator or apples when anyone mentions CRISPR?
