    cavitating torpedoes? All high speed torpedoes cavitate.

    Cavitate - ablade moving through the water creates a low pressure area on the trailing edge. If the blade moves too fast for the water to close in, an air bubble forms. The noise of cavitation is the bubble collapsing. The screw on a submarine will do this if accellerated too fast, caising a chirp that any half assed sonar tech can hear.

    Formerly on the USS Silversides SSN 679 during the bad old days of the late 70's.

    In my youth I was a hot rodder. Then race car mechanic and crew chief(on outlaw sprint cars). Now I'm a programmer who tweeks the components to get the best performance at home. Looks are ok but performance is the deal.

    Winning isn't everything, but second is the first loser.

    In acase like this the Government follows the rules more carefully than anyone. Declaring Unix to be public domain or nationalizing an industry is something other counties do. The Feds will follow the letter of the law, even enforcing IP rights until acout decides otherwise.

    Thats one of the things we stand for, no matter what it sounds or looks like( ie, stupidity or weakness), this is a strength rarely seen elsewhere.

    Several posters are worried about blocking legit websites. I agree, but face it there is no legit business selling penile enlargement crap. It's either block the site or spend huge amounts of tax money to find the individuals (with the spoofing, and hijacking used to send this crap, it aint easy) and file fraud charges, then spend more tax money to house them in a prison. I'd rather make them bankrupt. Welfare is cheaper.

    I know that by blocking anything from MSN.com I cut my SPAM problem by about thirty percent. I think I could get another thirty by blocking AOL but I actually know a few people that use it. No one I know uses MSN.

    I think you will find that PC games will run better on Linux than M$win. When the publishers start porting the big games to Linux the video card makers will provide excellent driver suppport and people will shift to Linux, not in that order. Less money for the OS means another game or two. The distros will become more average joe friendly and Linux will be a real desktop replacement. Remember games are driving the hadware side of the PC industry.

    I wish it was confiscation of all hardware and never being allowed to touch a computer again. Add 5 years and $100,000 for each hijacked computer and it would be good.

    I'll settle for tying them to a tree and feeding them ex-lax for a month.

    Try Maxtor's fluid bearing drives. In an old AT box the only way I knew the drive was being acessed was the case fan slowing down. I now have 2 in my current box, along with Panaflo Low case fans (80mm and 92mm) and AMD's own heatsink and fan on a 2000+. Very quiet for the performance. Also check out the Volcano 10 heatsink and fan, thats quieter than AMD.

    You got it! I somehow suspect that the organisms in a workstation are a bit less harmful that the ones on a toilet seat. Identify these microbes and then it will bear discussion.

    Every now and then a legislative body will do something right by accident. An example: The New Mexico Educational Retirement fund. The legislature has no control over it and can't touch a penny. Thats the way it was set up over 60 years ago. Every few years someone wants to change it (how can there be state money we can't waaste) and the PEOPLE raise such a fuss that it stays. It's about the only Govt thing in that state that works.

    There is text spam(email), graphic spam(pop-ups, banners), and audio spam(telemarketwits). All spam sucks, and will never get a penny from me.

    If EA's catalog for the last 3 years could be played nativly in Linux, the desktop use would explode. Gamers could save the money given to M$ and spend it on games.

    Games drive the PC hardware industry now. Nobody needs a 3Ghz processor for business apps. For M$ Office or Open Office a 1.2Ghz to 1.6Ghz is more than enough. The only reason for super fast processors and video cards is to play high end games (graphics workstations are different, I mean the standard home PC).

    I worked for a friend back in high school and it was hard on the friendship. After I found another job the friendship returned and was actually stronger. Thirty years later, and we are still good friends. So flip the coin, might work might not. I would never do it again.
