true,..true... they still blew up more crap, impresivly so, I might add, than we did. Post cold war, they are loosing nukes and uranium and the mafia has moved in. I'll stick with NASA
actualy, I found the Grafiti interface fast enough for a quick message or two. Once you get the specialised strokes down, its not that hard.
"I think the inclusion of a voice-based interface would make a PDA actually useable"
PDA's are fine, unless you have unrealistic expextations. if you want/need a laptop, cary a laptop. a PDA is for addresses, calculator, notes, a little e-mail ect... if you want games, buy a gameboy.
Recent story on Discovery chanel. The Real story of the russian space program. They blew up more spacecraft than the US ever produced. it took them 4 TRYS to get their heavy launch vehicle (I forget the name.. big thingie.. 30 or so engines) off the pad. not testing, real launches. Blew them all to hell. We never knew due to cold war blackout and iron fist on the media. Don't know what their human deth tole is, but I bet the % is far worse than us.
When someone wins, and they get to be shot into space.. which contry is going to do the shoting?? USA has a far better/safer program, but Russia is cheaper, and gives you that genuine "Cosmonaut" experience.....
Ship 7 people up to mir, force them to perform tasks in zero-G between puting out fires and sealing holes... whoever wins that week, gets to come home. Thats a real "Survivor"
"Half-finished? From Apple? Unlike highly polished M$ 1.0 products?"
Hey, I never said they were andy better...;)
I aggree the finished product will be fuly functional and finished. Mac has a tradition of that. It just struck me as odd that they would release a "beta" product without full support for very important hardware-level systems, when enabling those systems could seriously change the enviorment. Beta's, I thought, were released so testing could be done for compatability, functionality, development and bugs. This seems to be a "feel good" release, designed to let people see what it will look like and make them hungry for the real release, not something for serious testing. Prehaps it should be called an Alpha.....
I respond to this, as it's by far the most polite response. Blunt pretty much hits it on the head. Perhaps I have just been soured by the years of "strange" ideas that have been flowing out of Apple. IMacs without floppies or CDR's, forcing the user to purchase add-ons. Mac's that ship with only 16-32megs of ram, only allowing me to run 1 or two apps at once, unless I purchase more, take out the 30 or so odd screws for the case and installing it myself. The endless string of lawsuits flowing from the premature release of data. beta testing a product that will not support firewire or USB fully and no Voodoos or 3DFX cards, and who knows what else. these components can RADICALY change the way the OS works, and with a system as graphically intense as OSX, I have to wonder how valid the "beta" tests will be if enabling these components will completely screw up something else. I am expecting more flame on this, but after all the hype, I was hoping for a little more "finished" beta. I think I need a nap.
"(no Voodoos or 3DFX) and single monitor systems only"
Lokks like another fine half-finnished product from Apple. How long before we see the trademark "multiple monitor support now available for a modest fee,... say $600 or so. Oh, and its incompatible with THAT processor, you need an upgrade..." After all the security and fussing Apple has done to keep every detail of the new OS a secret before it's launch, you would figure they would have done a better job of finishing off the little details. What is the target group for this OS anyway?
How many companie have we herd from now that have decided that their database of personal information is a saleable "asset". Shure they may give notice, but that just means that they will give notice.........
Computer security at the Central Intelligence Agency was not rated ``because of the nature of its work'' but the spy agency gave a classified briefing to panel members, subcommittee spokeswoman Bonnie Heald said.
Well of course... what else would you expect? They would have to report all the hacks/cracks they have had. I'm certain the other departments would have gotten away without public disclosure if they could. What about the FBI, NSA ect..
How 'bout we sue you for being an idiot instead.
Yawhatever:b If you object to the refrence, I would expect a coherent response. the paralel seems good to me. Metalica is suing napster and the schools to recover their "lost profits"... Shure The songs were posted "without asking permision" thus making them "feel bad". The legal system in this country has come to the point where ANYTHING and ANYONE can be sued. for ANY reason.
Someone made a very good point when they asked if the phone company, like the universities, could be "sued" or asked to cut off service to those downloading MP3's over a dialup. I think no way, the filtering and overhead would be incredible. I can understand limiting bandwidth due to congestion, but the schools should not be responsible as a connection provider.
Constructing something like this is certain to inflame some religion somewhere, and then jackass #1 will strap seventeen sticks of dynamite to his chest and throw himself at the base of the 50Km tower. Is it posible anymore to create some kind of scientific advance that NO ONE will object to? The space cable/lift thing is a fantastic idea and the potential is unlimited, but it will probly be shot down by politics.
The bigest issue I have with the CE devices is, the damn thing is too small to be a decent computer, and too big to be a convienient PDA. its a techie toy without a home. Most people I know who have had them have returned/sold them and bought a laptop or palm like device. Yes the iPAQ is cheeper, but is it realy more convieniant or easier to use?
MP3 players work so well 'cause they get a LOT of life out of a AAAA batery, thanks to no moving parts. The harddrive module is a good idea, except that you would have to change bateries once an hour. Harddrives and LCD panles are the chief reason laptops still can't go more than ten hours, max, without recharging their 2 1\2 pound batteries!
Sounds like a nifty little toy. But only if I already owned a Visor. over all, the Rio players are smaller, cheeper, and don't use as much power. I can certainly see several exec's I know picking these up. Wonder when the law is going to go after the manufacturers of hardware designed to play copyrighted materials (again)..ect...
Recently I realised that at 30, I was quickly turning into an "older worker". sometimes in the bid to save money, the older workers are looked upon as a drag on the budget. they take more vacation, more insurance, more pay, and generaly don't take as much crap as younger workers looking to make a good impression. Anyone who works in a large corporation knows that skill set is not a top priority for upper management. Not having those skills themselves makes them un-qualified to recognise ability in someone else. why not fire the 10yr vet, before he can retire, and hire some fresh faced MCSE out of school, at half the pay, then find out 6 months later that he is full of shit. It happens. Believe it. Keeping your skills curent is not that hard, but the level of ass kissing required to maintain your position, not to mention climb, is unbearable.

Is the KDE Licence thing all worked out now? I mean.. There was a story here yesterday about the QT licences... Whats up?
