  1. Marvel at the possibilities!! on Microsoft Cracked · · Score: 1
Is it really a suprise that a network made completly of NT/2000 was hacked?

I am curious as to the motive of the hackers, Piracy, Blackmail, or just "because it was there". Imagine if the source code was dumped onto source forge or some other open source collaborative site (preferably out of the legal reaches of M$ in a former eastern Bloc country)One article spcefically named WINE as an application . Maybe the patches would be released in a timly manner and actually work.

Then again fixing Windows is a pretty daunting task for a million open-source developers

will everyone please just aknowlege that the internet is not the groundwork of a new society. At its best it is a monumental timekiller following in the footsteps of television and radio.

  3. Configure a toaster? on Where are the "Internet" Appliances with Ethernet Cards? · · Score: 1
80% of america cannot keep their VCR from blinking 12:00, can you really expect them set up network appliance? Dont forget, a typical installation would require the user to select a gateway and configure their firewall to allow those packets to and fro... easy for you and me, but a seemingly impossible task for the general public

The Modem is undeniably the simplest solution for Joe Normal... just plug it in to the wall.

  4. Confessions of a "casual gamer" on Vanishing Game Genres · · Score: 2
Before you blame the decaying state of gaming on the "Casual Gamer" please take a moment to look at it from my perspective. When I was younger and single, it was not a big deal to kill 12 straight hours on the latest computer game,

Now that I am married and have a newborn child my free time is segmented in fifteen minute increments. as a result I try to get a "quick Fix" where ever I can. Gamespy to me is a lifesaver, I can get in a few frags with just a few moments of free time.

I don't have the luxury of a lot of disposable time to dedicate to the learning curve of a new game, so I have a tendency to stick to what I know, in my case Quake and a handfull of real time strategy games

I'd like to add that the Mod community has added a new dimemension, extended the longevity, and ccontributed to the popularity of FPS games like quake I, II, III... It would be great if other genre of games would "open " themselves up to the same community.

I had a Mac 2Ci that when booted up on a specific date would show a photograph of the development Team. I'd sure like to see a photo of the guy who wrote that @#$* paperclip in office.

  6. Who will enforce this? on Geek Profiling: The Next W.A.V.E. · · Score: 1
I understand the dangers with building a profiling database, but how does pinkerton plan to implement this program. The Nazi youth of old was at least linked to political party/ military /law enforcement with considerable public influence. Last time I checked pinkerton had control of the ever-influencial mall-cop industry

if Pinkertons security presence in the malls of america is any indication of their competence, I wouldnt consider this a threat to our civil rights, more as an excersize in futility.

Seriously, if parents and teachers can't communicate and use discresion and wisdom to help the children who are truly in need of assistance what real positive effect is a database backed by a rent-a-cop going to do. If kids control the input, then how seriously can we trust the information? within the first hour of operation this database would be filled with more FUD and BS that a Microsoft press release. It would be nearly impossible to diseminate any legitimate information.
