That just confirms the whole image of the US as an international bully. Do bullies prey on the strong? Of course not. Would they have pulled this stunt 15 years ago against the mighty U.S.S.R.? Probably not. They pick on those who are not in a position to be striking back.
The thing that bothers me about this whole fiasco is the fact that the yanks are incarcerating a russian guy for distributing his tool in russia and purportedly violating some american IP law.
Can you imagine the shit that would fly if the shoe was on the other foot and some american lecturer in russia got sent to a siberian prison?
The moral of the story: Foreign devils, don't set foot in the united states. Ever.
The problem is not with dialup modems or even cablemodems for that matter - it's with the terminology.
For gods sakes, a "56k modem" CAN NOT do 56KB/s. At its *theoretical* best it can do 5.6KB/s and practically speaking you will be lucky to hit 5. Dialup users only *wish* that a 56k modem could do 50+KB/s.
"56k modem" means "56,000 baud modem".
If your cablemodem is consistantly dropping below 5K/s then run, don't walk, to the nearest phone and call your cable co up because obviously you have severe technical issues.
The whole issue is confusing because companies will flip between Mb/MB/Kb/KB depending on which sounds most impressive in that particular ad.
Why do people get hung up about who achieved some technology first. It has very little bearing on who did it *best*. I was reading a good article in the business special of the national post (a daily paper here) where they had done a study on the success rate of first-to-market companies. An astounding number of these companies were either out of business now or relegated to an insignificant market share (*cough* apple *cough*).
In most cases it was the second-to-market that ended up dominating that market sector since they were able to capitalize on the efforts (both the mistakes and the successes) of their forerunners.
Or for a completely different perspective lets compare this to martial arts. If you have ever seen any ultimate fighting championships you will know that all the "pure" (by the book, true to their specific style) fighters get their asses kicked. The ones who win incorporate the best of all other styles (brazilian jiu-jitsu anyone?). Did they invent their moves? Did they innovate in their field? It doesn't matter because they win. It's that simple.
So tell me again, WHO CARES who did it first. I want who does it best.

Canada does not operate under the same laws as the US.
I know, it's amazing isnt it. I've also heard rumours that there are other "countries" (this is what they are called akaik) each with their own set of laws.
After reading such a clear and unbiased post I was shocked to see that you use a mac!
Who'da known?@?
It's nice to have posters like you on slashdot who have obviously sat in on all the major business meetings at both MS and Apple over the past 10 years or so (and the ones you missed you got up to pace on by watching that computer movie with the guy from ER). You can give us the "inside" scoop on the who mac situation and somehow (through magical powers perhaps) see right into the powerful mind of steve jobs (now with altivec!) to see what motivates his business decisions.
bravo! keep up the good work!
p.s. let me know when you get those damn PC coworkers cornered, I bet you will show them who's boss with your big bad mac! haw haw! I can't wait to see the look on their PC faces when they realize they are inferior to the mac coworkers.
The "poor guy" you are talking about is a porn-maven. Remember that monthly item you see on your credit card bill to "Starlite Entertainment Group"? Well that is how he pays for *sucks.com.
You are right that the victory is hollow; this guy is just as much a part of the problem as any big business. It's all about the greed.
It's just as much a service as it is a product. How is little johnny coder sitting in his basement going to provide redundant servers and a commercial grade pipe to redirect (read: anonymize) tcp traffic?
It hides your ip and gives you 1 click access to different "personas" with varying degrees of privacy. The idea being if you want to shop online you enable a medium privacy setting so that you reveal just enough info necessary to get the job done. Then when you want to flame your boss on the company website you turn on full anonymity and fire away.
Its an interesting concept and no, using junkbuster does not accomplish the same thing. Banner ads are the least of my worries, my static IP however points right back to me.
You go to learn sound CS fundamentals. The whole idea here is that you learn the art of programming without getting mudded down with specific syntax. Then later on when "C###" comes out and your boss hands you a copy and tells you to learn it you wont even bat an eyelash.
To that end, choosing java is a perfectly valid choice. It's cheap which is a major plus for our cash-strapped education systems and it teaches students OOP concepts.
I'm no mega-coder but thanks to my CS experience I can pick up pretty much any language in no time at all because I've seen and used so many different types.
"mastering" a particular language is something that comes thru years of experience. It's not something you should be striving for in basic CS courses.
You said it yourself, your friend has a cheap mobo. Why don't you buy your friend some quality components instead of complaining how much of a hassle it is to get his garbage up and running.

Since you are new here I will explain how it works:
If Nvidia releases 10 driver revs a year, that is too much and Nvidia is using us little guys as free beta testers (burn in hell you bad company you!).
If Nvidia releases 9 driver revs a year, that is too little and Nvidia is a bloodsucking monopoly that doesn't listen to the little man.
You see where I am going with this? The beauty of this setup is no matter what Nvidia does all the slashdot whiners still have plenty to complain about! Brilliant!
Now what I want to know is where did all these passive aggresives come from? Little Man Syndrome runs rampant on slashdot.
Forget the trolls, don't feed the whiners.
