I am so sick of writers talking about "the well" as the holy meccha of online interaction.
I was heavily involved in the local BBS scene when I was younger, and strangely enough we managed to SOMEHOW survive without the magical powers of "the well".
Like tomwhore said, ever hear of FIDO? Shit, ever hear of USENET? It wasn't that long ago that USENET was relatively spam free.
Let me tell you why some people think "online community" doesn't exist: The great dotcom goldrush of the past few years. A bunch of people started dumping loads of cash into these new "super.com sites" and through some incredibly stupid lack of foresight, they just figured that there would be hordes of people fighting to buy their product/use their service. Well you know what? It doesn't work that way. Communities start with a GRASSROOTS effort. There are plenty of examples of this: Slashdot started as a tiny site at one point, Tomshardware was a jokey little fanpage not too long ago, Bluesnews built up from nothing. You can't BUY that sort of thing.
So lets not confuse the death of a bunch of poorly planned VC projects with the "failure of online communities"
Call me crazy, but when something breaks on my system, I try to fix it rather than switching distros.
How many times do you read on slashdot "oh yeah I couldn't install the matrix windomaker theme.rpm so I switched to mandrake/debian/otherdistro"
HUH?????
When you get a smudge on your windshield do you trade your car in for a new one?
Help is available!
Next time something breaks, look for a mailing list for that app and search the archives, try jumping on irc.debian.org #debian, do a web search... nine times out of ten there are other people experiencing the same problem who are more than willing to help.
I know you will have a hard time accepting this due to your steady diet of violent movies/games/TV ever since you were a tot but in OTHER parts of the world it is not considered acceptable behaviour to shoot other human beings.
Seriously, try port scanning yourself. You will be AMAZED at what you find. Even just to test out ipchains/iptables rules, I like to scan my machines from both a trusted and untrusted site. Often things will show up that really shouldn't show up. Once you see it, you can easily fix it.
You are only doing yourself a disfavour by being so pig-headed.
...dsniff qualifies as "script kiddie" material. It's a collection of tools that require a reasonable amount of understanding of network protocols in order to use effectively.
I read through the article and it seems the qualifications for being a renaissance man include developing games for more than one platform and reviewing movies.
weak weak weak.
I read it expecting to hear that he had written a few books, a couple of musical scores, painted etc.
The people who don't know a single thing about computers are easy to deal with, it's the know it alls that cause problems because 9 times out of 10 they know nothing.
Man you are totally missing the point, it doesnt MATTER what window manager you are using or what kind of filesystem you use.... you compile source on your system to run with your setup... its that easy.
As far as people saying that there are config files all over the place and how can one ever know where to look?#$ Welp, try/etc... you'd be amazed at what's in there.
And the init script thing? Some people would have you believe that each distro uses their own system, well last time I checked the various distributions fall under one of 2 categories: BSD style or SYSV style. So while their may be some minor differences, the fundamentals are still the same. No it doesnt mean it's easy as pie for a newbie to jump in to a new system and start tweaking their init scripts but it DOES mean that there is method to the madness and no, the people who put together these distributions are not just pulling init styles out of their ass.
I think the problem stems from people trying to apply wintel thining to a linux issue. Only when you start insisting on pre-compiled binaries that work on every system do things start to get messy.
Hey fluxrad, its easy to poke holes in someone elses belief system, why don't you tell me what you believe in so I can tear it to shit and make fun of you?
I don't really have a lot of respect for people who call themselves "open minded" and then proceed to dump all over christians or any other religion for that matter. I may not agree with them but you know what? At least they believe in something which is more than I can say for a lot of people out there.
Look at it from the point of view of a business trying to keep their equipment up to date without breaking the bank... you can buy 100 copies of office and then replace them in 2 years or you can buy a yearly subscription and stay with the most current version. Depending on MS' pricing it could be more cost effective to go with the subscription.
why do you think he mentioned the age of his TV? It certainly wasn't to brag about it. He also mentions that his receiver is low-end.
He is basically saying that the PS2 is more than adequate for the everyman and he "tests" this by using an everymans setup (older TV, low-end receiver etc). Makes sense to me.
You should read the first couple paragraphs again where he makes fun of home theatre snobs because he was referring to people like you.
janurary 25th, 2004: [idiot, big city, australia] Wow, i really love this 100mb link streight to my house that i got installed yesterday. I also love how i share a 128k pipe with the rest of the criminals who live on this god forsaken island as the only link to the rest of the world!
You just described every consumer grade ISP on the planet. YOU DON'T PAY ENOUGH FOR THEM TO GIVE A SHIT. Get used to it. If you want real performance/service you have to pay for a commercial grade connection.
If you hadn't come out and blatantly said it, I would never have known your gender... nobody forced you to divulge that information.
As for females in the tech industry, where I work they hire underqualified females over qualified males simply because of their gender. I find this all very amusing. Anyhow didn't we finish with womens lib back in the 80's or something? I thought we were onto gay rights or saving seals or something or other.
The thing is, I don't want @home deciding what is "meant to go out of the users home networks off your broadband connection".
The problem is with the big ISPs it seems to be all or nothing... right now it's pretty close to 'all' and I would hate to see @home start deciding what is "good for me". If i wanted castrated high-speed service I would sign up for Sympatico HSE.
On the proxy issue,
1) I have no way of verifying that.
2) I have no way of verifying that.
if @home doesnt sell my information then why is it i have a ton of junk emails in the @home email address I was given but have never used?
The last thing i want is to see PPPoE or some similar dumbing down of my @home just because joe moron down the street left an open share on his machine and had his goat porn collection deleted.
Right now I have a static ip, no @home firewall, and optional http proxy (which I don't use).
The hands *off* approach taken by rogers@home is what has kept me with them. Sometimes I wonder how long it will be before too many idiots make too much noise and @home implements a moron lockdown. I guess when that happens i will have to take the leap to shell out 4-5 times more cash for a commercial connection.
As for the original poster, buddy you don't know how good you have it... shut your piehole before you force @homes hand.
Amen brother, usually I have to drink 5 or 6 pints of Keiths pale ale before I start seeing that sort of "effect" =)

Somehow you made a giant leap to misquote him as wanting more gov't involvement????
Get a grip!

Don't forget these wise words came from "a small cafe just off West Broadway in New York's Tribeca neighborhood" so they must be important!

"dumb babies"?
Do you point at small children on the street and laugh at them because they hardly know anything?
Do you mock a 6 month old child because it doesnt know how to walk?
You need help.

You forgot to mention the most diabolical of the recent "advances": PPPoE

Well seeing as you are a gun toting white trash american.... YES!
I don't give a rats ass about your opinion and I'm lucky enough to live outside of the O.K.U.S.A.
How does that sit with you?
200 + 200 = ?

dear AC,
do yourself a favour and go look up the definition of the word "insipid"... it doesn't mean what you think it does.
