My thought as well. And the article has this:

"It's fairly easy to build nanoscale objects that slide around on a surface," said Tour's colleague Kevin Kelly. "Proving that we were rolling - not slipping and sliding - was one of the most difficult parts of this project." So just how do you make a nanocar go? At room temperature, strong electrical bonds hold the buckyball wheels tightly against the gold, but heating to about 200 degrees Celsius frees them to roll.
So why go the "wheel" route if there is a better way to move stuff around?

I have a Gen 1 iPod that I've used pretty much daily. Excellent device, but the battery is starting to go. Thought about retiring it and buying a new model, but then I Googled for a replacement battery and found one for $30. Comes with a clear and concise user's manual -- see here. From the manual, looks pretty easy to drop in a new one, so I went ahead and ordered one.

Unfortunately, my name is no longer there, even though I was the creator. My name and others have been neatly edited out as people have left while the group has moved from Dragon to L&H and now to ScanSoft.

I spent many hours on that silly Java applet trying to keep it working under Mac, Linux, Solaris, and Windows. It appears that those working on it now have not been so dedicated. It does not run on my Solaris box.

For I/O, perhaps. But all of the STL containers I've seen are templates with no virtual functions. Vendors may do things differently, but I've used GNU, Sun's Forte (RogueWave), and STLport and a grep of all of the them show just I/O and related virtuals.

Since most of the STL type checking evaporates during compile time and potentially inlines, your code just might be faster and with less overhead than otherwise. I'm addicted to the std::for_each function myself.
