Then... pray... It's not as simple as I make it... It may take a small sacrafice to make it posable. Who do we place on the alter... hmmmmm
It looks like NSI is holding Lunix.com... This being significant for two reasons...
Lunix is the often used mispelling for Linux... Lunix.org is the user group page for a Linux user group.
Lunix is also a Unix like system for the Commodore 64.
Now... if the author of Lunix wanted the domain Lunix.com he can't have it. Thanks to NSI.
(I rember at one point seeing a page offering the domain for sale but thats gone.. it now clames the domain is just waiting for a page to go up.. as a rule you don't see those pages becouse the author usually gets to the website pritty quickly)
Now say NSI grabbed the name of a new busness and waited for that busness to go for it's Internet home. What then?
Say a busness gose under... the domain reverts to NSI and the busness name is sold. The new owner wants his domain. But NSI won't let go.
Now on this domain...
It seems NSI has a webhosting service. Thow I've seen nothing on it byond a larg amount of websites hosted by NSI. While it's not odd for a webhosting service to be relitively obscure. Even one by such a larg company like NSI and it's not odd to find a default page for a new website. It is odd to find so many such pages from one source. Thies pages usually stay idle for a long time and that is odd. Normally a person would jump into the website as soon as it's live. Often before the domain will accually resolve. Now it seems odd that a person with the time and energy to research web hosts.. find and chouse NSIs hosting service and then not have the time to do anything with the site. Odd but it might happen... on occasion... but this would be like... really rare... Somehow some mystical reason... huge numbers of people research find and chouse NSI then mysticly become overloaded and can't work on the page itself.
In plain terms... NSI is hosting the site themselfs there isn't a user. It's just a placeholder so no one can have the domain.
I considered this once...:) My idea wouldn't work however.. But yours is diffrent and should work.
My idea? (keep in mind people IT DON'T WORK)...
Commodore 64 emulator running under Unix.... running under... Lunix (Thats Lunix NOT Linux... diffrent systems).... For those that don't know... Lunix is a Unix like system for the Commodore 64...
It won't work.. The C64 dosn't have enough memory to run a c64 emulator and can't run XFree becouse it has NONE of the requirements (Not supported, not enough ram, low end display (TV) etc.. it has a mouse.. thats all)
Your refering to the 1997 rulling and NOT the news story BTW.. Your a tad off topic...
The candy bars are a "bulk liccens" the end user is buying the bulk at a discount for doing so. This anolog to Microsoft selling bulk liccenses something I know people object to but I'm not one of those people.
The OEM deal says the OEM must buy a copy of Windows for EVERY box he sells. The 1997 rulling says he may then sell it alone instead of with the computer. This means the end user is not FORCED to buy Windows as part of the pacage but may then buy Wndows as a seprate pacage. As it should be. This means the consummer gets to pick his own operating system.
Saying otherwise is anolog to every home built by contractor X must then install appliences from company Y even if the home owner wants appliences Z.
OEM's need to OFFER Microsoft products to compeate but the end user should be allowed to say "No" to Windows and buy something else for this computer. Pacage deals are good when it's an OEM working to offer a better deal to the consummer. It's bad when it's a software company trying to rob consummers of the ability to NOT buy a product they will not use.
The accual story... OEMs desiring to sell PCs with Windows preinstalled can do so an remove pacages such as IE and replace them with pacages such as Netscape. This is exactly what Compaq did in the United States and Microsoft sued them over it.
Now in Germany if Microsoft wants to preinstall IE thats fine... but then an OEM in Germany dosn't have to install it. They may instead go with Netscape. Other posablitys with this... A DrDos as a functional replacement to the Dos that Win9X runs ontop of.
If Microsoft wishes to preinstall MsOffice with MsWindows fine but then an OEM can then rip the two appart and sell them as two diffrent products.
That reduced price has allways been a sham. Windows is over priced to start with.... The reduced price is something like $25 to $50... I rember when $25 was what you charged for high quality software. $200 and up was for mainframes and other such deals where you expected there to be 4 to 200 users using a single computer. I personally object to pricing policys based on the estimated amount of users on a given box. But that was how it was done and still is by some companys.
The whole idea of selling Windows for $100 to $200 is really obnoxous.
>Honestly, why would someone feel so territorial over a chat room that they required a viligant bot to protect it otherwise?
Reasons script kiddys attack IRC channels... 1. Object to topic matereal. (An act of censorship... technical book burnning). Example.. a religous Zellot might attack an IRC channel dedicated to a diffrent religion. Or a religous fanatic could be after a channle of the same religion but diffrent views than his own. IRC Channels dedicated to poltics, debate or religion are frequently targets
2. Dislike of a single person. Revenge for being kicked off or just intrested in getting back at one person the rest are casualltys...
3. To prove IRC sucks and everyone should be using (insert favoret chat client). Person has a techno agenda.. wanting to convence people that IRC is obsolete. They think they are doing everyone a favor. It is for there own good that they can not use IRC. They shouldn't use IRC at all. It's evil evil evil... Or to prove the IRC network is evil...
For some it's a power rush.. For some it's an ego rush.. For some it's working up to that day when they hack into a bank computer and make a $11 billion cash withdrawl from a non-existent bank acount.
For some it's pure game... Not out to prove anything. No ego no power just a puzzle.
There isn't one script kiddy. There are many kinds and many reasons.
Some have a personal agenda against the target...
You never know what kind of cracker you got... You just know you've been screwed...
One is you can have a trademarked logo that basicly means "We tested it and it works on Linux and we support Linux". No testing agentcy needed... This won't be as good as a central testing agentcy. However if the logo is enforced like the GPL has been enforced over the years then abusers of the logo can fix the problem by providing a software solution (a driver for the hardware) or fix the hardware. Eather way the problem is forgoten. This will get hardware support out a bit faster as well as companys will want to have the offical logo some will slap it on to discover it's a liccensed logo.
Second thought is.... consummer fraud....
Saying hardware works on Linux (or leaving you to believe it dose) by placing a logo to the effect on the pacage should be considered consummer fraud.
How much of the test relied on static pages how much of the test was dynamic pages?
There is a Linux kernel module to speed downloading static pages. It's just a remote file copy and there ends up being additional overhead when a user space application (Web server) dose the work. The same module passes dynamic pages to the server.
Linux however dose a decent job on dynamic pages.
If your website is graphics heavy then your proformence for Linux should be less than NT but if you have a lot of CGI,PHP etc type content you should preform better than NT.
The number of users (at once)... Can Linux or NT be trusted to such a high load environment? I'd think if you get 20 or more hits at a given moment you'd want to consider Solarus or other high end system.
To make it clear... It should take about 2 seconds (at worst) to get a page out. 20 people at once. So say half that for a normal load.
10 for every 2 seconds. 5 per second. 5 * 60 = 300 300 pages a minute. 18,000 pages an hour 18,000 for 8 hours a day = 144,000 [8 hours instead of 24 becouse people sleep]
Thats a lot of traffic...
My math may be a bit off but even with a few mistakes and bad assumptions you are dealing with heavy load when you expect a system to serve off 20 pages at a given moment. if your dealing with an odd burst the system should be able to handle it given no new traffic.
Also wemen do have it hard in managment. Some people ignore female managers based on gender alone. Some think female managers have addatude problems . Some people ignore all managment so men get this almost as much as wemen. But when get more of it.
Some people will pass around rummors that a given female manager is sleeping her way to the top. People not usually given to gender bies will quite often believe such rummors.
> So what is this about? Why are you picking on us, programmers and IT workers?
As you might notice the people doing the picking ARE programmers an IT workers. And it's just a general addatude that has been around for a VERY long time.
By the way rarely dose the job discription of secretary include fetching coffie. Rarely dose the job reality exclude it.
> If you think sexual descrimination comes from "[some] fifth grade teacher [calling] on you more often than someone else", you're sadly mistaken.
I might point out that you won't make it into the door if you don't have that deploma.
There is enough research to say that a child discuraged in the primary grades will not even try once they enter collage let alone work there ass off in the workforce.
Basicly if a mentor keeps telling a child "you'll never make it" unless they are thickheaded they'll never try.
I've hung around the techy girls in high school. They would give up after a while. It's sad when obveously smart girls start thinking they are dumb simply becouse they can't make the grade.

My sister has similer issues. She is a profesional car macanic. She has to fight to get hired when guys need only pass a simple math test. [I was offered same job.. all I had to do was pass a test... reason I never got the job? I made the mistake of letting it be known I know nothing about cars.. I can't even drive.. still want to hire me? didn't think so] Once she has the job she must fight to KEEP it. She now has a locked toolbox becouse people steal her tools. She says she's more pissed that people steal her ciggerets but I don't think so. She works hard and only gets credit from her co-workers.
She's also a poet. A rather good one. She gets credit for that more than anything else she dose and that stinks becouse she dosn't do poetry very often. She likes to work with her hands. She likes building things. Cars, Computers, anything technical.
But she often dose NOT get any credit for it. When it comes time to cut staff she's the first to go.
My grandmother was a nurse... Very little has changed sence her time.
We have progressed. But little politicly correct programs that let stupid lazy people into jobs to fill quota have distroyed that. When hiring the question becomes did she earn it or was she given it? Just renforces the old myths.
I rember an interview with the female CEO of Sun Microsystems (when they had a female CEO) she said she had to deal with rummors of her sleeping her way to the top. She worked her way up and thats all there was to it. Some times I wish she still was the CEO of Sun... (I don't like the current CEO).
Most operating systems (Unix, MacOs, etc) do have some software develupment tools included (or at least they did). The whole idea was (and is) to encurage software develupment by the end user (encurage public domain develupment... the kind that keepped CP/M alive after the PC came to market). You CAN get software dev tools for Windows but Microsoft would much rather have a non-programmer userbase (where and Apple and Sun would prefer a programmer usebase). The reason for Microsofts diffrent addatude is Microsoft wants Windows to be more proffitable for software develupers. A simple application like "Hello world" could be created by any idiot on Linux or MacOs but not on Windows. In short commertal develupers DO NOT need to worry about public domain software on Windows. This is a bad thing for consummers. Free software drives prices down and quality up. When you compeate with free software you MUST do something better than free. When you don't have anything to compeate with then your free to throw out junk.
I think GCC for Windows on school computers would totally solve this... Or perl... Or just use Minux... (So the schools can run the old XT computers as well as the newest boxes)

Hay I mean it couldn't happen in the United States Land of the free, CIA and FBI.
Hold on a moment...
*Silently*Hay someone get the brainwashing machine working.... we got one... yeah.. he's on to us BIG TIME...
I considered this once... :) My idea wouldn't work however..
4. Bored... Need something to do...
You are right.. it's true for SOME kiddys...
Two thoughts on this....
Many questions pop up for this test...
5 * 60 = 300
300 pages a minute.
18,000 pages an hour
18,000 for 8 hours a day = 144,000
[8 hours instead of 24 becouse people sleep]
Thats a lot of traffic...
My math may be a bit off but even with a few mistakes and bad assumptions you are dealing with heavy load when you expect a system to serve off 20 pages at a given moment.
if your dealing with an odd burst the system should be able to handle it given no new traffic.
>None of the stuff this guy's mentioning could possibly related to there not being enough women innto computers.
You assume to much...
The areas you mentioned are not looked on as technical.
Programming requires technical skill marketting dose not.
SysAdm requires technical skill administration dose not.
I wasn't aware that the few who do make it into the industry still have people treating them as incapable.
That really sucks...
I know some ladys who have made it but I don't know what it took to get where they are. They clean the blood out from under the fingernails just like everyone else.
What I do know is they don't fetch coffie.
My sister has similer issues. She is a profesional car macanic. She has to fight to get hired when guys need only pass a simple math test. [I was offered same job.. all I had to do was pass a test... reason I never got the job? I made the mistake of letting it be known I know nothing about cars.. I can't even drive.. still want to hire me? didn't think so]
Once she has the job she must fight to KEEP it.
The phone network is still expanding. There are areas it has yet to reach.
It's taken decades to get the phone network everywhere it is today and it's not "job done" yet.
I expect DSL to take less time but it won't be done very quickly...
For people who wern't very importent to the POS network this'll be great for them.. becouse they won't see DSL for a long time yet...
The ammusing part is this guy wasn't talking about screenshots like you'd think... Makes sence for the quote but no...
He refers to "What You See Is What You Get" a wordprocessing feature where the software makes what you see on your screen match what you will eventually get on paper.
He spelled it wrong...
And he seems to confuse WYSIWYG with DeskTop publishing.
Apple backed off from desktop publishing to give Xerox a chance.
In short... he's got a bad habbit of reading of NOT reading byond the headlines...
