  1. what's the big deal? on AOL Time Warner Netscape CNN... and AT&T? · · Score: 5, Informative

Everybody knows that AT&T Broadband is for sale. It only makes sense that another cable company would be the one making the purchase. Comcast made the first offer, Cox is rumored to be interested, of course AOLTW is going to be interested. It makes sense for them. This isn't so much an evil megalo-corp bent on world domination as it is a large company that probably can't hit growth targets without making acquisitions.

And as far as size goes, there are plenty of companies out there that would dwarf AOLTW...some people need to calm down and take a look at the world before freaking out...

    trust me, it gets messy.

    • A responsible company (PHB's love this. I work for a huge company that only deals with MS for software because we would pretty much swamp any other company...MS is one of few, if any, companies big enough to support us)

How do you plan on competing once other people start selling the same Intel-based servers that you sell, for 20% less? Will you have to build a new market for Linux systems (much like you built the original market), or will you be able to take them on straight-up?

Now, I'm not sure how the /. backend works (although if .4 was released....), but I'm sure it would not be difficult to put the submissions in a backend text file, or something similar. This way, anybody who wanted to, could start "quedot.org" or whatever, and post the stories they want to see posted. Even if they don't post the stories, they can still access the stories.

Of course, seeing as Rob has a seat on the board of andover, he has a legal obligation to do what is in the best interest of the shareholders, so this may not be possible (because someone else would get the pageviews)....any comments?

The directors of a corporation have a legal obligation to do what is in the best interest of the shareholders. I agree that the patent is stupid, and everyone should be able to have one-click ordering, but it's not Amazon's fault that they did what they were legally obligated to do.
