Ok, but how many system-critical programs do you know, that do floating point operations? And when using doing high-end mathematical research I suspect that you choose your Hard- and Software according for your needs... and it won't influence Quake that much, will it?
Btw, which compiler does FreeBSD use? Not gcc? Is there another free compiler out there? I'd love to see one.
And why anonymously? I'm programming for a living (mostly Java, but I can do C as well). I've never writen anything like that, but the size of similar plugins (for xine), the existence of libcss and the docs for GStreamer suggests that there is nothing stopping me, that half a week of research wont solve).
So you can say, that I could write that plugin (I think there are serveral other people outside the USA who'd be much faster and produce better plugins, but what matters, is that I _could_), I don't live in the US of A... so what could the MPAA do, if I wrote that plugin and distributed it.
AFAIK the MPAA can't do very much outside of the USA.
What you have to remember, is that the right to bear arms is not something as widespread as the right of free speech. AFAIK the US of A are a very special case, 'cause they included the right to bear arm in their consitution (or whatever they call it, don't ask me). In many other countries there is no such thing as a right to bear arms in general, you either have to proof that you need it, or at the very least that you are sane and able to handle a gun. AFAIK (again) the right to bear arms is so basic in the US of A, because the citizens have the Obligation to prevent the Government from turning into a Dictatorship (and doing this using guns, if needed). This Philosophy is not very wide-spread (in fact I don't know of any other country, which has exactly this reasoning, but I didn't do any research, alas I may be wrong).
> From what I have seen Java limits you to the lowest common denominator. Microsoft didn't want to make that mistake, and thus C# is far more flexible in what it will allow you to do.
Luckily enough this is untrue as of Java 2, when using SWING, which enables you to use any Component, that is found in an modern GUI.
The.NET runtime will be especially hard to implement on platforms, that do not provide the Win32-API (that is on any non-MS-Plattform), it is possible to do, but exceptionally hard.
Java was designed to be implementable on every modern operating system (and it is implemented on virtually every modern operating system)
> 1. Break staroffice as a package apart and building it into an opensource office package made up of CORBA objects so it could be used in different GNOME applications?
Uhm... where's the problem? OpenOffice is Reallity and the source is beeing worked on, the entire Package is broken up, and the Wordprocessor is working stand alone... I don't geht this point.
> 2. When will solaris be shipped with GNOME as the default desktop?
Well... it is about beeing able to choose, after all. You can install Gnome on your Solaris (never did it, don't have such a box, but heard it is possible), as you can install KDE (I assume). Dou you want to force them to install _your_ default-desktop??? Thats open?
> 3. When will SUN ship it's systems with a protocol a bit less bloated than X? (Ica?)
So you want Solaris to run a non-X Windowing System and at the same time to be Gnome the standard-desktop? I see a problem here. I've not heard that Gnome runs on anything but X.
I think I haven't gotten your point or misinterpreted your posing, otherwise I can't explain, why it's so easy to counter.
OggVorbis is even more free than GPL/LGPL (for those, who prefer not infecting other software...). The algorithms and the formats are completly public domain, and you're free to do whatever you want with it (even include it in highly proprietary software). Only the implementation is LGPL (for the library) and GPL (for the demo-player, which IMHO doesn't have any effective value, 'cause there's a plugin for xmms).
It's Tux,
it's actually just a half web-server, as it can only handle static web-sites (and passes other requests on to a "real" web-server). But it's supposed to be fast as hell.
Just take a look at http://www.fenrus.demon.nl/.
Not only this - as I think this is hard but possible - but furthermore that hardware that is made 5 years from now can still run it. APIs (as OpenGL and OpenAL) are a fine thing, 'cause they enable you to programm independent of the Hardware.
Obviosly something has to be Hardware-dependand, and this is the driver, which you can't update on an CD... therefore you got troubles when you want to play that bootable CD-Game on a computer much newer than the game itself.
c't once had a article about bootable Windows-CD, as far as I can remenber they used a Ramdisk to store the Registry. This would definitley be possible.
For those who read the (german) Magazine it can be found in c't 11/99 Page 206
GeForce2 in XFree 4.0.1? This was pretty straightforward for, just follow the instructions in 0.9-5, install the kernel-module (it works, so enter the line in/etc/conf.modules (or/etc/modules.conf, depends)) and edit/etc/X11/XF86Config (or/etc/X11/XF86Config-4, when using Mandrake) to use nvidia-driver instead of the nv one.
Finally install the opengl-driver and restart X,
did take me about 10 minutes (including download)
Well...
live of paranoid people isn't exactly easy, you know? If you want a handsome system that's clean and easy to use than you have to deal with the (possible) security risk of running it in "High Security" or even "Medium Security".
Good cards for Linux are definitley the NVidia cards (open vs. closed-issue aside) they provide you with good drivers and have a great performance.
Tom's Hardware even tested the GeForce 2 in Linux(!): http://www.tomshardware. com/graphic/00q3/000811/index.html
and you _can_ compare it (using Quake 3 in Windows and Linux), which he did.
There's one little part of the Seattle Sourcebook for Shadowrun that I'd like to qoute (It's poorly translated, 'cause I only own the german version of this sourcebook):
Microdeck Industries Microdeck Plaza, Maind Street and 124th Avenue NE/Brian W. Gates III, CEO/no racial discrimination/# 9206 (78-5082) Microdeck is one of the leading software producers since the invention of the computer. The corporation was founded by the Family Gates, who still own and lead it. They produce Software for small Companies and private People, but have expanded there production to Military- and Flight-software.
Well, suddenly the word "crash" comes to my mind;-)

Do you use Jikes? It's about 5-10 times faster than plain javac ... try it

Welll ... but actually you can do cryptography in rocks & clay ... then it's called hard crypto.

We can't define by colour? Reminds me of HG2G:
;-)
"Where are we?"
"Something green."
"What is this?"
"Something blue."
"Shapes, I need shapes!"
(One Geek-Point for anyone who knows the next line

If you are searching for a non-gnomified Browser, try Skipstone (http://muhri.net/skipstone). It uses Gecko as well, but is pure GTK+ AFAIK.
