Because of the management paradigm: "If I can't see you, you're not working." Seriously, I actually *administer* the VPN and VOIP solution for my employer, and "working at home" is something only to be *considered* in an emergency. "We need someone who can be here all the time" is the line I usually get.
I like the idea of putting H1B in the CIO position. Generally companies spend more on managers' salaries than the workers...so why not outsource the management structure? Especially since it does not seem to be a problem that the workers and managers are on separate sides of the planet?
But I know plenty of people who picked this up in high school (often by discovering all of the wrong ways to do something, which appears to be a very good method for obtaining mastery of a subject).
This. Of all the skills I've acquired in my 15 years of being a network monkey, I'd say 90% of them were gotten by horribly botching a personal project and having to fix it. It's the best way to find out what really works, and what doesn't, at least IMO.
I installed Foxit, and every time I clicked a PDF link in FireFox, the disk would churn for 5 minutes and everything else running in the browser would come to a halt. It made Acrobat Reader fleet-footed by comparison.
Sounds like you don't have a wife, you have a "roommate with benefits".
Sarah Palin?
No, Tina Fey.
I guess 'good job' could vary. I have a decent job, and my wife home-schools the kids while I work my brains out (mostly by choice :-> )
Sure, we don't have the 72" Plasma Hi-Def with the blu-ray, and I drive a 5 year old sedan, and her a 6 year old minivan...but we make it work.
Shhhh! Don't point it *out* to them man... who do you think has to clean up all the exploding heads?

...and if they call more than 3x in one month you can press charges for harassment...
Hell, if that was true half the debt collectors out there would be out of business. In a past life, I had some calling three times a day.
The phrase "The best government money can buy" comes to mind.
He capitulated to republican demands to prioritize a balanced budget over boosting employment.

Dressing up communicates a real seriousness about one's work
Absolutely. And if I can't see you, you're not working.
CEO Michael Dell will personally pay a $4 million fine.
I think his first question was, "Do you take a personal check, or do I have to use my AmEx?"
Seriously, a 4 million fine for someone like Michael Dell is nothing.
If you want a two way radio system to be able to work during a nuclear blast, only tubes will do, as the EMF will render transistors useless.
Come on... exactly *what* would you be transmitting during a nuclear blast? Except possibly "Ouch. Bye."
I guess it's kinda like Schoolhouse Rock.
The idiots in the Senate aren't any smarter than us, but they are full-time lawmakers and usually started out in law practice.
[AdamSavage] Well, there's your problem! [/AdamSavage]
Yeah in "Minority Report".
Cause browsers is stoopid!
In what way can you count "English Literature" and "Modern Medical Ethics" towards a technical degree?

Sure. I said GP talked like something, but I didn't say what you said I did. Is that clear enough for you?
I'm not seeing the bit where GP said that "we" were good, just that "they" are bad. Can you clarify?
And you talk just like the stupid people in the movies: We are good and they are evil.
The only reason you can slam Google here is because they actually caught the guy.
No, Google didn't catch the guy. The kids' parents caught the guy and told Google about it, and only *then* did Google take action.
Many of us naively thought that maybe a new Administration, especially one led by a legal scholar...
Who would that be? The same legal scholar that held a part-time lecturer position and never published an article?
