I have two reasons to like this decision:
1.) Deus Ex 2 will be out next month, and now I have time to just concentrate on that game without feeling 'rushed' to finish quickly so I can get into HL2.
2.) It will help prevent the cheating that was BOUND to happen with the source being leaked.
Ultimately, don't blame Valve for this. They were going to release on time and this isn't an "excuse." Your real anger should be aimed at the crackers.
A direct order from yer Cap'n:
Not one of ye scurvy dogs it to be givin Morty any more Rum. He be goin stark mad, and he be drinkin all the rum! Y'arr!
Y'arr, does any lad find this here news of pirates somewhat coincidental? Today be talk-like-a-pirate day, it be!
Offenders will get twenty lashes of the cat-o-nine tails or walkin da plank to Davey Jones' locker. Y'arrr!
I'll buy one of these (people choice shirt), myself.
Honestly, if they wanted us to buy a shirt, why didn't we get a vote on them instead of the editors? I guess that just falls into the 'slashdot persona'
Borland stuff (JBuilder and, AFAIK the new C++ Builder) are made with Java now, so its the same group of files for both install, except the windows has a.exe file to run the app, and the linux version has a.sh file to run, other than that, it should be smooth sailing.
FWIW, I downloaded JBuilder9 personal yesterday and have it installed on both my linux and winXP boxes, and they both work flawlessly with one another (including the project files).
Yup, looks like they simply used the same framework/engine/kernel from JBuilder. The one thing that won't give away that it is java is the fast loadup, and speed of the entire application.
Wow, looks like JBuilder with C++. Considering (as I mentioned before) that I'm a pretty big JBuilder user, I can only imagine all the benefits this will bring (really compete well against MS Visual C++, also).

TheLinuxWarrior writes "An article at CNET says Rob Malda, Slashdot co-founder and editor, is leaving the company." You'd think after two decades of working at Slashdot, they coulda changed the graphics and page layout a bit!
But, if you can take that joke, taco, I guess you are free to joke at Sun all you'd like;-)
I won't be playing an Ultima game that isn't made by this man.
If EA wanted to make another Ultima, they shoulda contracted Garriot in. Plus, its a MMORPG. Ultimas were always huuuuuge single player worlds (except ultima9, but that was mostly because of forced deadlines).
Both are seperate machines on a cable modem (and both have free firewalls on them... suse has the suse firewall, XP has the free version of zone alarm).
Honestly, if MS released a brand new operating system that looked identicle to XP, but was just ultra secure and ultra stable, would it sell?
Or would managers and housewives just say "its the same thing!"
Plus you want to keep pushing the GUI that made it popular in the first place. Why give Linux a chance to gain in the desktop market?
**For Linux Zealots that are going to inevitably say "Well if MS is going to sell secure and stable OS everyone would want a copy!, just shut up. When the big kids talk about "selling software" we are talking the major buyers, here. Which aren't necessarily the tech saavy.
Yes, that last paragraph was an insult to the parents obvious troll-paragraph. I run a SuSE server and an XP box. Both have been up the same length of time without a crash.
On the contrary, its about experience. Graduate degrees are wonderful with those that already have lots of experience in the field first (ie - don't go from freshman year of college to PhD without some work experience put in).
The reason is, if you apply for a job with a Masters and someone else with a bachelors and 3 years of experience, you won't get the job. Why? Because experience is more important than extra education; plus, the bachelor is cheaper. With higher degrees comes higher expected pays!
So, I always tell people to get a job with a bachelors and have your company pay for the graduate degrees. That way you get what you want (your grad degree) with a bonus (your grad degree for free!) and your company gets someone with experience AND a grad degree for cheaper than hiring one straight outta school.
I'd like to thank every single reply to my parent comment!
You truely help make the only true point I was trying to make. It doesn't matter if this was a hole built into the kernel that was the size of Texas, the fact that it happened on Linux will be downplayed and if the slightest thing happens on windows you blow up on it. The poll running right now (worst zealot) is pretty pertinant to this conversation, isn't it?
Pot calling kettle black in more than one way.
Michael says: Another non-programmer has seen SCO's presentation, and without attempting to verify the facts through his own research, reported on it.
Which is hypocritical, because we have caught slashdot editors running unresearched articles that simply states the point of view of the editor. Michael especially with a lot of censorship and YRO articles.
That's right... GOOD!

Ok, my asbestos suit is now firmly attached.
FLAME ON!
*ducks*
Ruin the game before I even have the chance to play it.
I'll still get it, though, for the great single-player experience it BETTER deliver on.
How would this ruling relate to a similar anti-spam law if it were created?
Free speech is one thing, but if I'm paying for bandwidth, wouldn't that be another thing?
Y'arr! It be a great thing to pirate from others, but it be greater to pillage the location that it be!

New IDE but no screenshots? :-(
Nice thing is, Borland tends to release 'personal' editions for at-home use that require no money (though the features are slimmed down).
Being a big fan of the JBuilder series, I'll be sure to d/l the personal edition for C++ (in a day or two when the servers aren't so clogged).
But what about Tribes 1? Probably the best multiplayer team game to date, and they had vehicles (but all just ships).
Honestly, I don't think the comment had any business on the front page. He's hyping chrisd's company (who isn't even hiring in the first place)!
But you are right. Race, religion, etc are discrimination, now specific companies isn't? Real mature.

Just posting to reiterate this suggestion. Teaches newbies OOP and Java, and experienced coders how to code in Java. Best coding book I ever read.

The slashdot search page could definately use this kinda technology!

I'll wait while the "wind0ze suX0rs!" 1337 Hackors try to make this sound insignificant to linux, but can blow up on MS when a virus is released.
Just a healthy reminder that nothing is 100% secure, so no point in pointing fingers (on MS OR linux).
