      Gee, I want to be treated like cattle (with all the trimings) and find my identity in an advertising carrier (this one being geek) just like Star Trek and feminism.

      Create a magazine, it's cheaper more honest and doesn't require the sale of your soul. Plus you can keep what you've created.

      I think it would be fitting if some entrepeneur ripped their copyrighted designs and sold their OWN shirts (they are charging quite a lot for them, considering they paid an absolute pittance for the design). After all, it's not like printing off t-shirts with the exact same design is depriving anyone else of physical property now, is it ? How would VA be hurt ?

      Makes you wonder why /. saw fit to ensure they own the copyrights when it seems like the editors and many of their more vocal readers are always pooh-poohing them.

      Only the most insane, irrational zealot would pooh-pooh /all/ forms of copyright. Of course images and designs deserve to be copyrighted - or does anyone find acceptable the ridiculous treatment Bill Watterson's creations have at the hands of profiteering tee-shirt makers?

      The community at large has always been more concerned with fair use; you should be able to listen to a song as much as you like, or mod your xbox if you paid for it, and by that same token you should be allowed to display whatever you want on your desktop or your wall. But you can't sell someone else's song for your own profit, and it is equally unethical to steal someone else's image and attempt to make some money off of that.

    But couldn't they have selected a shirt with a non-pretentious slogan? All of these are a little too much like "Can't live without Dasani". I mean "mainline geek culture" and "volatile hyperlinkage"?

      They used to have one, I got it. Has "Slashdot" with "news for nerds, stuff that matters" under it in small print. That is on the center of the front of the shirt, and on the back is a barcode, and under it, it reads "anonymous coward". I got mine through thinkgeek a few years ago, but I guess they abandoned that design. I got it because it was simple.

      I agree. I like the "volatile hyperlinkage" shirt's icon, but I don't want the words "volatile hyperlinkage" on it. Just the logo on the front, the URL on the back. What more do you need?

      That said, the one that I like exactly as is is the "soothing green light" one. It sounds like an old soda ad or something.

      Technically, yes you can put copyrighted material on a shirt. (anything you create is copyrighted) :-) Oh... you mean you put unauthorized copyrighted stuff on a shirt? I think you probably can, but you shouldn't because it is illegal.

      I have never done it, but I am guessing that they will. They can't really check everything you put on a shirt, so that is why they clearly state that you must not do it, to cover their asses. I thought I did a search on there and found a shirt with Homer on it. I am sure Fox didn't authorize that one. If you make the store, upload the image, buy the product, then delete the store after you get it, I am guessing you could do it. For that matter, you could buy tshirt transfer paper for your printer, and print out whatever copyrighted image you want, and put that on a shirt.

      Out of curiousity, I searced cafepress for goatse. There were about 10 different stores. One even had a Teddy Bear with the pic on it. Nice. Then there was the WWGD? shirt (What Would Goatse Do?)

      Well, they last many many years, but some of my t-shirts literally began to disintegrate into thin air. It took perhaps seven years, but still. I had to re-learn how to buy new clothes all over again. ;) And now my jacket is falling into pieces. Ugh. I wonder if I can buy another one, identical, but considering it's been more than a decade, I doubt it.

    I noticed that the hypodermic needle design actually was changed to RJ-45; some were complaining that the RJ-11 design didn't make sense. Any respectable Slashdotter would have an Ethernet port installed, not a modem line!

      I've been using 'Light' mode pretty much since it became available. It's much easier on the eyes. When I load the main page before logging on with a new browser, it hurts my eyes to even think about using the default homepage setting.

      What's the deal with T-1 lines anymore...for downloading, not really a big deal. On a cable modem I usually get equal speed on up to 1000kbps more. So you can run a server at a higher upload speed, but on the Internet, it is always better to receive than to give. And it's dirt-cheap in comparison.

      Say T-3, and then I start to get weak-kneed.

      You can get DSL via RJ-11, which for some of us is the only way of connecting our RJ-45 LAN to the real world.

      In fact, DSL goes well with the hypodermic needle, as it can be quite addictive (much more so than its inverse, LSD :).

      Doubtful, but I would like to see more options in the preferences for site design.

      Something like:

      1) Graphics heavy (new design with spiffier graphics)
      2) Traditional (as is)
      3) Low-bandwidth (for Lynx users)

Information wants to be free and what-not. They could've made the shirts, and still kept the logos open-source if someone else wanted to go around printing their own shirts (which I doubt too many would).

      I hear what you are saying but Slashdot or OSDN isn't overflowing with money. Everything they do has to make financial sense. The money from these shirts will probably help make Slashdot self-sufficient without needing to be subsidized by the rest of the OSDN. It would be hard to garuntee that revenue if someone else could make the shirts.

      Whats more important, Slashdot surviving or adhering to a saying that isn't even true? Information isn't alive, it can't "want" anything.

      Here's a clue: what did OSDN's sites do when most sites in the world protested against software patents adoption in the EU, by putting a blank page or at least a notice?
      Zero. Nothing. Nada.

      Not a single word came from any of their sites, and it would have helped the cause a big fscking lot, but also give them a bad PR in the corporate world.

      No trolling intended. Companies are after profits, there's nothing wrong with that, and OSDN is a company. We must expect a change of mind in the corporate direction when a bunch of techies become a succesful company.
      So, yes, they own all the rights of the material users will submit. Again, there's nothing wrong about that; then how about submitting your art elsewhere?

      People subscribe to slashdot, and dont get any real benefits (you can block ads in mozilla anyway, and seeing another dupe 20 minutes before the rest of the public?). Why do I spend 10 bucks on a tshirt when matalan have 5 for five pounds? Because I prefer to support slashdot. Why buy "fair trade" coffee over nescafe? Because you care were your money goes.

      The people buying slashdot tshirts will buy the official ones. In the worst case, simply have a trademark (the slashdot image should be a trademark) on the tshirt. Remember trademarks are for consumer protection, so you know you get the real thing.

      Except that the entire success and corpus of this website is from the "contributors", the thousands of people that dig up stories and post all these comments. Nobody comes to slashdot to read Malda's typos, bad grammar, and utter lack of editorial skill. Don't you think it's in poor taste to completely ignore that and proclaim "the website is where it is today because of Taco, and you get no say because you had nothing to do with it"?

      Oh, and BTW, slashdot has nowhere close to 3/4 million members. Just because the user ID ticker is in the 700-thousands doesn't mean there are anywhere near that many members.     I'm pretty sure the slashdot crew wouldn't care if random individuals created their own stickers, wallpapers, themes, and t-shirts, but if you start selling your own /. merchandise in bulk then I think it's reasonable that any trademark owner can have the option of not allowing others to profit from that trademark.

    In some parallel universe if Microsoft put the GNU logo on all of their packaging would you not support GNU's right to enforce that Microsoft remove that mark from their packaging, and if so then that is an assertion of the onwership of logos and trademarks. See, works either way.

I've worked in the clothing industry and if slashdot.org is spending more than $7.50 ( inclusive of production, shipping, duties, storage costs ) they are being ripped off. They are selling for close to 15 bucks and in my opinion a 100% margin seems a bit too high for an open source developed T-shirt.

      why is the last digit in the time '15' .. when my understanding is the only valid values for that last digit would be 0-9?

      Aha, probably an exposure setting on the camera that led to the 'impossible' time of 03:51:015. If you look closely the first and third LED's on the far right look half off.

    One could argue that the 4th added winner... the soothing green light design, is indeed the second best design, better than others there... and I think Thinkgeek agrees, what with their ordering of the t-shirts on display... in fact I agree completely with their ordering of them.

    At my university it seems that the computer science building always smells like body odour. Like some filthy unwashed people have been walking around there all day.

    Yet I'm from the engineering building, and it doesn't smell like that over there (the buildings are next to each other).

    So, are engineers cleaner than Computer scientists?
