I completely agree!
I'm sick of "Its in quicktime and I can't run it cause I'm a linux advocate!"
Just boot up the windows partition you "obviously" have and watch the damn quicktime.
Either you are the linux bigots you claim to be and you *never* use/have a windows partition (and yes, *never* means that you can't play that cool game that's window's only); or you can stop your annoying whining when something comes out that's windows only.
When O'Reilly comes out with a book.
I'm too addicted to O'Reilly books that I can only learn programming languages with them (or maybe if Bruce Ekert wrote "Thinking in Ruby").
This is tooo ironic.
Allow me to use your sig: I love Java. I hate C++
Why did someone make Java. C++ is object oriented and we have cross compilers. What's the deal?
Yeah, I know there are huge differences, but for someone that knows C++ well, but just heard of Java, that is usually their reaction.
I, personally, think that the more languages the better. Learning something new that is very similar to something else isn't a crime, nor a waste IMHO.
Give me 5 minutes and I can write a script that d/l's a slashdot discussion and pulls out all the email addresses. A side thought to my original idea would be to not "announce" your email address. Either don't put it up at all or somehow spam-proof your name (and using the word "spam" isn't good, cause I can filter that out in an extra 10 seconds).
Put yourself in the mindset of someone grabbing email addys with a script. How can I make an address that the common person can figure out, yet be complex enough to dodge simple filters... Keep this in mind if you have an email addy that will be displayed in the public eye.
Here's something useful if you have your own domain with unlimited aliases:
Put the name of the website as the name of the email. For example:
slashdot.org@mydomain.com
Filter it in your favorite email reader, and when you are tremendously bored you can go through your trash folder see what websites sold your name to spammers...
This guy has never played Deus Ex. The Illuminati everywhere determining how your existance will play in their little game of life. They are watching you...
I, too, am an engineer. But I'm not annoyed. You work on stuff like that for the goodness of science, not for the glory and popularity. Their contribution to science will always be known, even if their names are not. That's all the engineers and scientists should ever want. We aren't movie stars or models, after all...
You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can only have one of two things:
1.) A free country, and free economy where you, as a person, get to choose what you and your family does.
2.) You live in a dictatorship where the person(s) in control choose what is good for you.
It appears that you prefer the latter. Move to Cuba. I just don't want to hear you whine about it when it isn't free enough.
Point being, if you don't like it, don't watch it. But don't try and get everyone on/. to boycott something for your own little revolution.
Unfortunately the politically correct liberal mafia running our country won't allow this to be said, but the internet corrupts people.
It doesn't have anything to do with any 'liberal mafia', its the Illuminati that controls everything. Just mentioning this to you puts my life in danger.
Filtered internet access seems like the only option.
This is exactly what the illuminati wants you to think. It'll just grant them more power over the internet. Censorship, the DMCA, all of it... owned by the illuminati to dominate control.
Can you guys attempt to get a game designer (richard gariott, or warren spector, or sid meier, etc...) for a future/. interview. There's been good interviews lately, and I'd like to ask some questions to the gaming gods.
If you can remember Windows 95, this had an awesomely buggy USB stack causing misery for everyone involved. It was improved in 95
Release 2, then in 98
As I recall, 95 never had USB support, including OSR2. Once 98 came out (with USB support), then they went back and added USB support for OSR2. Just about 3 months ago I ran 95OSR2, and didn't have any USB support.
There's nothing worse than looking forward to a game, beating it, and then...it's over. Talk about your replay value. I wish they would
incorporate this idea into more of today's adventure/RPG video games. They did it then...why not now?
Try System Shock2 and Deus Ex. You can play the game 3 different ways in SS2, and an infinite amount on Deux Ex (there is like 5 different ways to solve each obstical in the game!).
It didn't have any big game developers or publishers set to write games for it. The system was going to try to break into a market where veteran Sega just failed. Its only major advantage was the linux OS (if you even call this an advantage).
It really isn't surprising that it failed. The market is rough, and you need to have something special to make your mark. Indrema didn't have anything out of the ordinary. And before you flame me about how wonderful the Linux OS woulda been, think of this: If linux was such a great gaming platform, then I'd expect to find quite a few games for it already.
The SDL is still a work in progress. Once this comes to par, we might have something to compete with DirectX, but nothing is ready at this time. Don't give up on the idea of a Linux gaming platform, just keep it on the backburner right now...
Actually 10 dimensions doesn't give an extremely stable theory of superstrings. It works best in the 23rd dimension. What I don't get is that the fifth dimension is a spacial dimension. Can galaxies see themselves on a different spacial plane??
Every wire inside your house has the potential of recording everything you do and sending it to an illuminati communication location to be stored. Hell, they've known everything well before the United States was formed.
Come on... we still use paper now-a-days, and anything important that was on that 8incher is on a harddrive or tapedrive (otherwise it wasn't important enough to keep). There is still books of info and stuff. When we get into digital books and remove paper from society entirely... that's when to ask this question.
I'm a touch disappointed with the interview. It was stuff I pretty much coulda told you about last year. I am more interested in what company he has started, people he'll be hiring, any more info on project "X", what genre of game he'd like to work on (I'm guessing he'll avoid RPG like the plague), stuff like that. For his first interview, the questions they asked weren't very good.
Perhaps Taco or Hemos can work their magic and get a/. interview of the 'ol Lord British??
He has learned his lesson, and, hopefully, others will also learn.
The biggest problem with game programming is that you can't just make a game and ship it, you need to have a publisher, support, buy a graphics engine, etc.... This can all be provided if you sold your company to a bigwig like EA. Problem solved, accept you have to adhere to their schedules, and basically do what they say. EA is a giant that needs to fall. Hopefully Eidos, Interplay, Activision, or some other *nicer* company will dethrown EA.

The point is, that they probably know about the technology anyway. Otherwise, the E-3 would be flying around Area51, not China. I agree that we should get those soldiers home, but it isn't about the technology. Its about the politics.
but if we ran into them, what do you think the military specialist would do? Admit fault, or come up with as many reasons they can to prove it wasn't our fault?
Same with the media.
It all doesn't matter, though, because the illuminati controls it all and will determine the outcome. FNORD!
This story was completely blown up by the media. It isn't a major issue, but without a war, the media always tries to start one. If the media didn't make this into some super-power trial, then the US would-of quietly apologized and everyone would be happy.
And Katz? He loves to take something the media blows up to make a controversial article in/.
At least stick to technology or science, or even linux next time, Jon! This crap isn't for nerd discussion, its just normal politics.
But rabid fans will want there own copy, not some crap on the internet.
